In Zones 3–8, ice cream tulips can survive. Northern regions experience too much wintertime cold for the bulbs to survive, but they could overwinter in a greenhouse.
Southern regions typically do not experience cold temperatures that would cause spring bulb growth and blooming.

Where in Australia are tulips grown?
We visit the largest tulip farm in Australia where we meet a fourth-generation farming family who are raising millions of flowers. Top tulip gardening advice for home gardeners is also provided by Paul and Dave Roberts-Thomsons.
The largest tulip farm in Australia is located in Tasmania’s untamed northwest, on the vent of an extinct volcano four hours north of Hobart. A flat-top farm with 85 hectares dedicated to growing tulips, hyacinth, lilliums, Dutch iris, daffodils, and alliums is located in this breathtakingly gorgeous region of the world. Harvest time comes in October, when the countless colorful blossoms are at their most vibrant. The farm opens its doors to the public as part of the Wynyard Bloomin’ Spring Festival, allowing guests to practically tiptoe among the tulips. As part of the festival, approximately 12,000 people visited the farm the previous year.
The Roberts-Thomsons are farmers who have been in the business for four generations. Since Paul’s grandfather, a major in the British army, purchased the property in 1910, it has been a family member since the 18th century. Dad and uncle of Paul were farmers who specialized in Dorset Poll sheep. Paul claims “One of those persons who was born knowing they would grow up to be farmers and has been doing so for 44 years is me. After earning his degree in agricultural science in the 1970s, he was eager to switch from sheep farming to growing tulips because he thought it would be a more viable and long-term business.
In 1984, Paul and his spouse Bronwen began their new life as tulip farmers by importing bulbs from Holland. The industry was small at the time, and finding reliable growing information in Australia was challenging. They first visited Holland in 1987 and stayed with growers there for six weeks to learn the ins and outs of the tulip business. Since then, they have returned numerous times.
Tulips are difficult to grow (commercially), according to Paul. Low yielding and risky tulips might have an impact on the planting stock for the following year during bulb harvest and storage. “It’s a never-ending struggle. But that was a wise decision. As one of Australia’s largest bulb growers with both wholesale and retail locations, they currently produce bulbs on 12 hectares.

- The bulbs begin to grow fast in August. As the shoots sprout, add nitrogenous fertilizer and blood and bone. During this period of rapid growth, they require calcium and nitrogen in particular.
- After the leaves begin to turn yellow around the middle of November, stop watering the tulips during the summer.
- Harvest bulbs by the middle of December so they have time to develop a ground skin, and then store them somewhere with good ventilation.
Tulips come in more than 3,000 registered types. The popularity of double tulips, which can have up to 36 petals and fringes in contrast to the six petals of a traditional tulip, is increasing, according to Dave, who imports new types from Holland. Dave claims that Single Late Tulips, which can handle warmer weather, are the best for Australian circumstances. Does Florida have tulip fields?

Although potatoes are not particularly picky, they do require well-drained, loamy soil that is rich in organic content. Pests and disease: Late blight (Phytopthera infestans) is a problem, particularly around the coast. On the tips and margins of leaves, in the leaf axils, and on stems, symptoms manifest as water-soaked gray patches. Even if the leaves don’t display any symptoms, late blight causes black spots to appear under the tuber’s skin. If it goes unchecked, the plant will be destroyed. Applying copper spray consistently throughout the growing season, including soaking the soil, is effective. Establishing a robust and healthy crop is the most crucial stage in disease prevention. This can be done by utilizing disease-free seed, planting in rich soil, avoiding pre-emergence irrigation, and watering sparingly once the crop emerges.
On the coast, wireworms are the most frequent pests to trouble your potatoes (especially in gardens recently taken out of grass).
A very thin, black beetle known as the Click Beetle, which produces a “Click!” sound when turned over, is the larval form of the wireworm. The larvae of the beetle eat in our gardens after laying their eggs in grass. Tomatoes, corn, potatoes, peppers, and squash have underground stems, roots, and seeds that they eat. On land that has just undergone a grass to garden conversion, the harm is worse. The actual larvae are crisp, golden, up to 1 cm long, and can survive in the soil for up to 7 years.
Your soil might have wireworms if your seeds don’t seem to sprout or if your plants abruptly droop and die. Damage from wireworms often manifests as an erratic distribution of withering plants in a field. Make a bait out of pieces of carrot and potato to test for wireworms before you start planting. Mark the bait with a stick and bury it in 10 cm of soil. In three or four days, dig it up. You have an issue if there are more than 1 or 2 wireworms per bait. Although they are challenging to manage, constant cultivation of the top 10 cm of the soil, trapping them on potato pieces, and crop rotation will lessen the harm. Bush beans, Brassicas, carrots, celery, corn, garlic, marigolds, onions, and peas all grow well when planted next to potatoes as companion crops. Asparagus, cucumber, kohlrabi, melons, parsnips, rutabaga, squash, sunflower, and turnips should not be planted close to potatoes.
