About Zinnias

Since zinnias are annuals, they will only produce blooms and seeds for one season before dying. The original plant will not reappear the following year. Types of Zinnias

When to Plant Zinnias

  • It should be noted that zinnias can be grown from seed inside if you like. Just make sure to transfer them gently and young.

  • To prolong the flowering time, sow a new crop of seeds every week or so for a few weeks.

How to Plant Zinnias

  • Depending on the kind, place plants 4 to 24 inches apart. (Many common kinds are planted 2 feet between rows and 6 inches apart within the row.) For information about each variety, consult the seed packet’s back.
  • Plant zinnia seeds no deeper than 1/4 inch.
  • The majority of zinnia cultivars will produce seedlings in just 4 to 7 days, but it may take up to two months or more for blooms to appear (depending on planting site and climate).
  • To promote air circulation, thin seedlings when they are three inches tall, spacing them 6 to 18 inches apart. As a result, powdery mildew is less likely to grow.

  • Zinnias may be harmed by bacterial wilt, powdery mildew, and bacterial and fungal spots. To prevent illness, keep leaves from getting too damp and correctly space your plants.
  • Problems can also be brought on by caterpillars, mealybugs, and spider mites. Spraying should be avoided unless there is a real infestation because some leaf damage is not a problem.
  • Thanks to their resistance to deer, zinnias may be able to prevent surrounding flowers from being eaten.

Why is my zinnia dying?

It is not advised to use insecticides other than insecticidal soap to combat harmful mite and insect pests because zinnias are important sources of pollen and nectar for many beneficial insects. In order to reduce insect and disease issues, good culture (soil preparation, fertilizers, irrigation, mulch, optimal plant spacing, and sufficient sunlight) is preferable to solely relying on pesticides.

Although aphids, spider mites, and whiteflies rarely harm zinnia plants, they can be destructive in hot, dry conditions. Can zinnias be overwatered?

Watering: For optimal growth, zinnias want moist soil. Young plants are especially susceptible to this. Deeply water the soil once or twice a week to keep it moist 6 to 8 inches down. Avoid overwatering zinnias since they are susceptible to rot diseases, particularly in moist, clay soils. Zinnias are relatively drought tolerant once they are established.

Fertilizing: Add compost to the soil before planting zinnias. Apply a side dressing of an organic 5-5-5 fertilizer when the first flowers appear for more and larger blooming.

What causes the browning of my zinnia flowers?

Zinnias from the “Zahara” series are less problematic than most zinnias.

Another bug that attacks zinnias is the leafhopper, which not only leaves spots on the foliage but also spreads a disease that can destroy the plants. So, the leading likelihood in this case is that.

Smaller insects like aphids and mites damage leaves more by bending and/or mottling them rather than chewing holes in them.

It’s also possible that you have dual issues, such as leafhoppers or beetles that are causing the holes plus a disease that is turning the leaves brown.

I would start by carefully examining the plants to see if you notice any bugs or indications of bugs, such as tiny bugs that jump up off the plants when you move the leaves or sticky “honeydew” (waste) on the stems (aphids) (leafhoppers).

Most bugs are killed by sevin. Although you might need to spray insecticidal soap (an “organic” option) multiple times and strike the bugs with it to get rid of an infestation, it works reasonably well against a variety of bugs.

A fungicide spray would be the solution to mildew if there are no visible bugs and the leaves are just turning from white to brown. The majority of fungicides you’ll find in garden centers have mildew control included on their labels.

I hardly ever spray anything in my garden. I work to minimize stress on my plants, and when issues arise, I rely on natural predators to take care of them. In order to reduce stress, plants must be grown with proper soil, the appropriate amount of sun exposure, and watering during hot, dry weather, especially while they are young.

Plants that don’t survive in those conditions are later removed from my yard. At the very least, I’ll try a different variety.

For instance, zinnias thrive in full light and soil that has been composted. Your zinnia plant may wilt with too much water or too little

How are potted zinnias cared for?

Container Care and Upkeep for Zinnias Make sure they receive plenty of sunlight throughout the day since more flowers will grow as a result. When the dirt has dried to around the first inch (2.5 cm), water the pots. To avoid standing water or wet roots, make sure the container has drainage holes.

How is zinnia blight managed?

Cause The fungus Alternaria zinniae has been identified on numerous occasions on samples given to the OSU Plant Clinic from zinnia grown in Oregon. The fungus survives the winter in soil-borne plant waste or through tainted seed. The fungus can live for up to 7 years in seeds, but only for 2 years in plant detritus. In general, the disease is favored by weather conditions or irrigation that keep leaves moist for long periods of time. Infection requires free wetness.

While Z. angustifolia is highly resistant, all Zinnia elegans selections range from mildly to highly susceptible.

Symptoms Small, elliptical, reddish-brown dots with cores that are grayish-white grow into irregular, huge, brown, dry expanses. Desiccated and brown leaves turn over. Similar patches can girdle stems and cause dieback in the areas distal to the lesion. Near the soil line, dark brown to black cankers with hollow centers can also develop. On flowers, little brown spots can grow until they cover the entire petal. There may be heavy spotting, and the petals may turn dark and wither. It is also possible for seedlings to damp off. Symptoms of this condition and those of bacterial leaf spot are extremely similar.

  • Start with seed free of pathogens. The germination rate of seeds can be decreased by soaking them in hot water at 125F for 20 minutes. Additionally, seeds can be treated for 30 minutes with 1 percent to 2.5 percent lactic acid or for 20 minutes with 12 percent peroxide.
  • Use resilient species or cultivars, like Z. angustifolia.
  • So that leaves don’t stay moist for a long time, irrigate.
  • Shorter leaf-wetness periods and improved air circulation will result from wider plant spacing.
  • During and after the growing season, remove and eliminate any plant detritus.
  • Throw away contaminated plug packs or trays.
  • Plantings should be rotated annually to different beds.
  • Use balanced fertilizer, keep EC between 1.25 and 1.5, and keep pH between 5.8 and 6. Be aware that zinnias frequently raise the pH of the growing medium organically.
