Over 250 flowerbeds are maintained by the parks department in Pella. This contains about 95 flower beds in parks and city buildings in addition to the 151 flower beds on city streets. In the Molengracht plaza region, we also maintain 44 pots and hanging flower baskets. Tulips are sown in the fall and taken out in May to be replaced with annual flowers each year. 130,000 tulip bulbs in more than 80 different types were planted in parks and along streets in preparation for the 2022 bloom. To guarantee the longest bloom season possible, we plant a variety of early, mid, and late blooming bulbs. Weather-dependent, the bloom period typically lasts from mid- to late-April to early-May. The tulips are replaced in May with 32,000+ annual plants and blooms in over 45 kinds, which will add color through the end of the summer.
How many days are there in the Pella Tulip Festival?
This year, Tulip Time starts on May 5 and ends on May 7 (Thursday through Saturday). Over the course of the three days, there will be events and parades.
Where is the Pella, Iowa, Tulip Festival located?
In honor of Pella’s Dutch heritage, the City of Pella scatters tens of thousands of tulips around these two parks. The Tulip Avenue in Central Park, which extends from the north fountain to the park’s center, is particularly brilliant and colorful. Along this walkway, a huge variety of tulips are displayed.
The lovely Scholte Gardens are located behind the Historic Scholte House Museum. The gardens, which have approximately 35,000 tulips, are free and available to everyone. Maria Scholte, the wife of Dominie Hendrik P. Scholte, the man who founded Pella, once took care of this area. There are benches for relaxing, sculptures for admiring, a gazebo for shade, and many different kinds of tulips here. The garden is kept interesting through the fall by substituting annuals for the tulips once they have stopped flowering.
In recognition of the war relief supplies the people of Pella sent to the Netherlands after World War II, this well-known garden was first established in 1947 using tulip bulbs supplied by the Netherlands. These gardens now contain more than 13,000 tulips spread across 17 beds. Two memorials in the Garden also commemorate the more than 800 local WWII veterans. The garden is kept interesting through the fall by substituting annuals for the tulips once they have stopped flowering. Free entry is offered.
On the stunning campus of Central College, about 15,000 tulips will blossom. The principal tulip beds, together with numerous other minor beds and the campus cornerstones, are situated in the plaza by the Graham Conference Center, on the east and north sides of Central Hall, in Jordan Plaza, Peace Mall, and Weller Flag Garden. All during the spring, about 30 different types will blossom.
Daily grandstand performances start at 1:00 p.m. Both park seating and bleacher seats are available. Tickets for the park offer some shaded seating and are a great choice for visitors using wheelchairs or walkers. The Parade of Provinces, a historical Dutch costume show, the introduction of the Tulip Queen and her Court, the renowned street washing, and more are all included in the afternoon Grandstand show. Park seating is $5 per person, while bleacher seats cost $10 apiece. During Tulip Time, tickets are sold at the intersection of Main and Franklin Streets.

Students from Central University play in a popular musical genre with a small band and vocalist. Their repertoire includes Broadway standards, jazz standards, and popular pop songs.
Join us for this upbeat, danceable country band’s performance of their award-winning original songs as well as classic country cover songs. They are fun for individuals of all ages and come to us from Deep River, Iowa.
The Friday night fireworks show is a treat for everyone in the downtown area. This fireworks display, which is sponsored by Pella Corporation, may be seen from the downtown area.

Bulbs cannot be brought across the US border, therefore Canadians going to visit or roadtrippers taking advantage of the festival’s close proximity to Vancouver should be aware of this. “Flowers are acceptable, we always say. Verge claims that dirt isn’t. Fresh clippings are acceptable to take, though, if all you want is a bouquet.
Tulip Adventures
Beyond the gardens, there are so many things to do that you could spend the whole weekend here. Helicopter rides offer a bird’s eye view of the festival. Alternately, enjoy the view while running a 5K or two miles in a fun run. The festival’s trips through tulip country, which include a centenary ride, are fantastic for bikers.

Tulip Towns

For the occasion, the local Kiwanis club installs a restaurant where they serve succulent wild salmon BBQ. All earnings are donated to the neighborhood.

The largest tulip garden in the world is called Keukenhof (which means kitchen garden in Dutch). It is located in the Dutch city of Lisse, near to Leiden and not too far from Amsterdam. Only two months of the year, from the end of March to the end of May, coincide with the tulip bloom. There are more than 800 distinct varieties of tulips at the 32-hectare Keukenhof. The park receives more than 7 million tulip bulbs each year.
As you may already know, Rachele is a major fan of flowers, so visiting the park was a must for us since we had the opportunity to visit Amsterdam on the first weekend when Keukenhof was already open.
When most of the tulips are in bloom and the park is at its most beautiful, April is the best month to come. Even though some of the tulips hadn’t blossomed when we went at the end of March, the garden was still beautiful.
In Keukenhof, which resembles a big botanical garden, you can really delve into the enchanted world of tulips. Each flower bed includes a little sign identifying the flower variety and another sign identifying the sort of tulip that was planted there. We never would have thought there were so many different varieties of tulips.
We relished our time with these flowers in their myriad hues like small children. In addition to tulips and other blooms, Keukenhof Park also hosts cultural activities and events for kids. There were several concerts in the park when we were there.
You can climb up to a classic Dutch mill that is located in the park. The finest part of the park, however, is simply getting lost in the tulip festival’s kaleidoscope of hues.
