The most likely cause of a plant’s purple leaves rather than its usual green color is a phosphorus deficit, as you may have noticed. Phosphorus (P) is a mineral that all plants require to produce energy, carbohydrates, and nucleic acids.
Compared to older plants, young plants are more likely to show symptoms of phosphorus deficiency. Some plants may become deficient in phosphorus if the soil is chilly early in the growing season.
Too little phosphorus may cause the underside of marigold and tomato plant leaves to turn purple, while other plants will become stunted or will take on a dull, dark green hue.
Purpling of Leaves
Numerous annual bedding plants and herbaceous perennials, such as decorative millet, some species of coleus, sweet potato vine, New Guinea impatiens, coral bells, kale, and ornamental pepper, have foliage that is red, purple, or nearly black. Some vegetable plants do as well, including purple basil and red-leaf lettuce. When grown indoors or in greenhouses, these crops occasionally lack the desired pigmentation, however when grown outdoors, they exhibit an appealing purple tint. Specialty crops can also have leaves that are ordinarily green but change to purple under unfavorable environmental or cultural conditions. In this article, the elements that affect leaf purpling are briefly discussed. The pigments known as anthocyanins are responsible for the purple hue of leaves. Many fruits and flowers that are red or purple as well as some tree species that turn a reddish hue in the autumn are all colored by these pigments. Environmental elements, particularly light and temperature, as well as the pH and the presence of metal ions (such as iron and magnesium) in the growing substrate, have an impact on the concentration of anthocyanins. The leaf coloring will increase under circumstances that boost anthocyanin production. Additionally, because anthocyanins can be hidden by chlorophyll, conditions that destroy chlorophyll can cause leaves to appear purple.
intense lighting. Increasing the amount of light that plants receive is one of the best strategies to make their leaves more purple (Figure 1). The synthesis of anthocyanins, which give plants their purple hue, increases with light. Anthocyanins are defensive molecules that shade and shield plants from excessive light. They not only make plants more pigmented but also more resistant to some insect and disease pests and can increase stress tolerance. By providing additional illumination or by increasing the amount of sunshine reaching the crops, light intensity within greenhouses can be raised.
light in weight. While increased light levels can intensify the purple hue of leaves, blue and ultraviolet (UV) light are the most efficient wavebands. Due to the high energy of blue and UV photons, anthocyanin synthesis is stimulated more than by photons with lower energy (green and red light). High-pressure sodium lights only emit about 5% of blue light, making them less effective at enhancing colors than light-emitting diode (LED) fixtures that emit at least 10% to 15% blue light. Far-red light, however, has the ability to both directly and/or indirectly lower anthocyanin content.
minimal temperature High temperatures can lower anthocyanin concentrations whereas a cool growth environment can promote their accumulation. Low light and high temperatures frequently fail to cause purple pigmentation, but low light and high temperatures frequently result in the darkest purple leaves on crops.
inadequate root zone. If the root zone is not correctly controlled, crops that typically have green leaves outside may generate purple foliage when grown in greenhouses. When there is a phosphorus shortage, lower-leaf purpling, especially along the edges, can happen. A phosphorus deficiency usually happens when a grower purposely restricts its supply to stop extension growth, like by feeding with only 15-0-15, since most fertilizers offer more than enough phosphorus. Other factors, such as a low pH, a weak root system, an extremely moist substrate, or a low substrate temperature, can restrict phosphorus uptake. Even though phosphorus is not limiting in the substrate, these circumstances can result in inadequate absorption, which in turn inhibits growth. Greenleaf plants may also purplize in response to bright light (for shade plants) and low temperature (for cold-sensitive plants).
Purple that! (or down). The purple hue of plants is crucial when crops are prepared for selling. Anthocyanins are promptly biosynthesized, and coloring of leaves can be induced in as little as five to seven days. Because of this, before shipping, crops cultivated in greenhouses or indoor farms can have their leaves turn purple by exposing plants to intense light (and preferably chilly temperatures as well). End-of-production lights can be used for this, or when the weather is suitable, plants can be left outside for a few days. Make sure the root systems are strong, the substrate contains enough phosphorus, light levels aren’t too high, and temperatures aren’t too low if leaves are purple when they shouldn’t be.
How do tulips that have been overwatered look?
You may be overwatering your tulip plants if you see the leaves turning yellow before the tulips have even blossomed. Where there are cold winters and mostly dry summers, tulips thrive. Tulip bulbs should be thoroughly watered after planting, and you shouldn’t water them again until the spring when you see shoots emerging. In the absence of rainfall, around an inch (2.5 cm) of water every week is sufficient at that stage.
Similar to this, if you planted your bulbs in poorly drained soil, they can be overly damp. To prevent rot, tulips need to have excellent drainage. By incorporating copious amounts of compost or mulch, poor soil can be improved.
How can you tell if your tulips are in trouble?
Wilting is a normal stage in tulip plants’ life cycles. Spring is when tulips bloom, and they quickly wither away. The nutrients are returned to the bulb as the plants wilt and die, where they are stored in anticipation of flowering the next spring, assuming the circumstances are favorable. The flower’s petals fall off, the stalk sags, and the leaves become yellow. Till the foliage on wilting tulips turns fully brown and all the nutrients have been sent back to the bulb, do not remove the leaves.
