Should I Cutting Back Peonies With Powdery Mildew

Wait to remove peony leaves that are still green and healthy until a hard frost has killed them. Herbaceous and intersectional peonies need to be totally trimmed to the ground at the end of the growth season.

How can peonies with powdery mildew be pruned back?

The first step in preventing powdery mildew on peony is to purchase or transplant only healthy, disease-free stock. Is the outbreak present on your produce? Then, only remove the severely affected leaves, and at least once a week, apply the milk mixture to the remaining sick leaves. There must still be sufficient leaves for photosynthesis to take place.

Peonies should be pruned before winter to keep your garden organized. Green claims that if you don’t cut them, the leaves and stems would rot, turn to mush, and eventually tumble to the ground.

What happens if peonies aren’t pruned back?

In the winter, you don’t really need to do anything to or for your herbaceous bush peony plants. However, if you discover that you neglected to remove the stems in the fall, you still have time to do so.

Herbaceous (bush) peony, such as the intersectional Itoh peonies, eventually lose their leaves and stems when the plants hibernate for the winter. The stems will tumble to the ground and turn “mushy,” and the leaves will begin to decay. That is normal. The plant’s roots are not perishing; instead, new shoots and stems will appear in the spring. People may panic and believe their peony has perished, but this is simply the bush peony’s natural development cycle.

Be careful not to cut any exposed peony ‘eyes,’ which are typically pink or crimson buds and serve as the stems for the following year, while cutting off peony stems that are close to the ground. Put the stems and leaves in the trash after disposal. Peony stems and leaves shouldn’t be composted since they can harbor botrytis, a fungal disease, especially in moist environments. Each peony plant’s surrounding area should be cleaned up.

Most places don’t require mulching peonies. If you mulch your herbaceous bush peony plants, make sure to take it off in the early spring to avoid burying the roots too far. Years of mulching or applying bark dust around bush peony will eventually cause the roots to be buried too deeply, which could lead to fewer spring blooms. Just an inch or two of soil should remain above the roots of herbaceous bush peony after you remove that.

Additionally, it is normal for a mature peony’s crown to gradually heave up through the ground and display some exposed “eyes” in the winter. Don’t worry, peony plants enjoy the harsh winters.

Tree peony leaves must be removed from the ground and branches when they start to degrade. A tree peony’s branches are left hanging, barren and naked for the winter, rather of being chopped down in the fall. Don’t worry too much if you or a helper cuts a tree peony down to the ground and you panic or feel dejected. It’s likely that the roots have grown deeply enough to support spring branch growth. It might grow into a magnificent, revitalized tree peony in two or three years. I’ve seen it happen, so I know. In contrast to bush peony, tree peonies prefer more soil on top of the roots. Try adding a few inches of soil around the base of the trunk of a tree peony if it has lost its vigor. Yes, it is exactly the reverse of what is suggested for bush peony.

You can go outside again after the snow melts and it’s nice out to work on any “lost” stems.

Why does powdery mildew appear on peonies?

Prevention is key because once your peonies are infected, there is no spray that can treat them. The issue can be greatly avoided by choosing resistant cultivars and properly situating them in full light with sufficient air circulation.

Personally, I wouldn’t waste my time using fungicides to stop powdery mildew.

Botrytis is a different, more harmful disease that occasionally infects peony and causes young stems to droop and die as well as buds to become black. When it is below 70 degrees in the early spring, onset occurs. If this illness is discovered, it must be treated right once because it will damage peony plants. As soon as you notice unhealthy plant parts, remove them. To prevent the illness from spreading to more stems or other plants, make sure to clean your pruners between cuts with alcohol or Lysol disinfectant.

Therefore, if you live in a region (like I do) with increased humidity and it’s a particularly hot summer with little rain, you’re in a prime setting for powdery mildew. But not everything is lost.

If the disease is discovered in time, there is still hope for the plant, and there are strategies to keep powdery mildew from harming your plants.

Preventing Powdery Mildew

For plants to avoid getting powdery mildew, sunlight and air movement are essential. This will require pruning for bigger, bushier plants like zucchini, squash, and giant tomato plants. In order to improve airflow and reduce the risk of powdery mildew, some of the leaves and their stems should be pruned back. (See How to Prune Tomatoes in my essay.) Maintaining a consistent moisture level in the soil and watering early in the day will help prevent powdery mildew from growing on plant leaves. If I can, I also attempt to keep the leaves from getting wet. This can be greatly aided by the use of a soaker hose system or hand watering at the base of plants.

To prevent too much nitrogen in the soil, which can cause excessive new growth on plants, use a slow release plant food. Instead of attacking the older, more resilient growth, powdery mildew prefers to attack fresh plant growth.

Additionally, you can wash foliage once a week to ward off powdery mildew by hose-blasting it to remove any possible fungus spores from the plant. Do this in the morning so that the sun will help it dry rapidly.

Making your own powdery mildew milk spray is a successful home cure that may be used as a preventative precaution. Just milk and water are needed for this straightforward, healthy recipe. Every two weeks, spray plant leaves with the milk spray, which is made by combining 40% milk and 60% water in a spray bottle.

How to Treat Powdery Mildew

To save the plant, you must learn how to treat powdery mildew as soon as you see an infestation. Start by removing all infected limbs and leaves. To clean the snips and stop the spread of disease, dip pruning shears into a solution made of 9 parts water and 1 part liquid bleach between each pruning cut. During the pruning procedure, you definitely don’t want to spread the powdery mildew.

Clean the soil of dirt and properly dispose of any plant parts that were harmed. Throw away the trimmed limbs and leaves rather than adding them to your compost.

Then, add a 2-inch layer of organic mulch on top of the soil to stop any possible powdery mildew spores from splashing back onto the plant when it is watered. This is a good preventative measure to keep the soil moist and, ideally, keep powdery mildew at bay.

The plant could potentially be sprayed with an organic fungicide prepared in accordance with the instructions on the box. If you want to get rid of the powdery mildew, this might be the quickest method, however I would also prune off the damaged leaves and stems.

Powdery Mildew Over-Wintering

Because this fungus is host-specific, it doesn’t necessarily mean that other types of plants in your landscape are in danger just because you detect it on one variety of plant. Despite the fact that powdery mildew has numerous species, all of its symptoms are rather uniform.

Most certainly, you’ve seen it before. Powdery white or gray patches develop, frequently covering the majority, if not the entire leaf surface. Additionally, fruit, flowers, and plant stems can all contain it. Fortunately, the harm caused by powdery mildew is typically worse than its symptoms. It rarely kills the plant.

bicarbonate of potassium This has the distinct advantage of actually getting rid of powdery mildew once it’s there, much like baking soda does. A contact fungicide called potassium bicarbonate immediately kills the powdery mildew spores. It is also permitted for use in organic farming.

If mouthwash is effective at killing oral bacteria, powdery mildew fungus spores can’t hope to compete. And that is the basic idea. Generic mouthwash with an ethanol basis has a high degree of controllability. Jeff Gillman, a Ph.D. and Associate Professor at the University of Minnesota’s Department of Horticulture, found that tests using one part mouthwash to three parts water performed well. Just be cautious while combining and applying mouthwash because you don’t want to harm fresh foliage.

VinegarVinegar contains acetic acid, which works similarly to mouthwash in controlling powdery mildew. A gallon of water mixed with two to three teaspoons of regular apple cider vinegar (5 percent acetic acid) works well. Although larger amounts (over 5%) of vinegar are more beneficial, too much of it might burn plants.

Lime with Sulfur/Sulfur

Direct contact with sulfur stops the growth of disease spores. The solution will penetrate leaves for even greater efficiency when combined with hydrated lime. The Bordeaux mix, a widely used variant of this mixture, consists of copper sulphate and hydrated lime. All of these remedies have the potential to burn plant tissue, harm soil microbes, and kill beneficial insects. It is also regarded as having a mild toxicity to humans and mammals. If at all, use with caution and sparingly.

Milk

Milk is the newest participant in the conflict with powdery mildew. It is thought that naturally existing components in milk are at work to fight the disease while also bolstering the plant’s immune system. The exact reason it works so well is yet unknown. One trial that used a weekly dose of one part milk to two parts water produced positive outcomes.

Water

Ironically, dry weather and high humidity are ideal for the growth of powdery mildew. Straight water, however, works against it because it washes the spores away before they have a chance to implant. However, I do not advocate the use of water as a control measure because moist foliage is a friend to numerous other plant diseases. If you decide to use this strategy, do it early in the day so that the foliage has time to quickly dry off.

Hemp oil

This is a convenient organic alternative for disease and insect control. The neem tree, which is indigenous to India, is used to make neem oil. This natural pesticide has a broad spectrum, is excellent at controlling disease, and is less harmful to mammals and helpful insects. The best method for preventing powdery mildew has mixed results. Results are often at best average.

Even with a wide range of management options, prevention remains the best treatment for diseases like powdery mildew as well as other conditions.
