Hostas are known for being pest and disease resistant. Gardeners may buy and exchange hostas without fear of bringing anything hazardous into their garden, save from foliar nematodes. Regrettably, this is no longer the case. Not only are foliar nematodes out of control, but a disease has suddenly spread like wildfire through the market.
A few “fortunate” hosta farmers began discovering what appeared to be new, fascinating sports of normally common hostas about 1998-2000. Blue or green colored dots or blotches appeared throughout the gold portion of the leaf in these “sports.” Some felt it was lovely, while others found it troubling.
