When was Carex founded?
Carex is one of the largest genera of flowering plants, having been described by Carl Linnaeus in his work Species Plantarum in 1753. The number of species estimated ranges from roughly 1100 to almost 2000. Among all flowering plants, Carex has the most rapid chromosomal evolution. Carex has been classified into subgenera in several ways.
