petrified dust (in desired colors) I used sepia, carnation pink, and moss green.
Gum Paste Peony Tutorial:
Step 1: Create the pistil centers first. Bend the 26-gauge wire pieces’ ends with craft pliers to form a little hook. This hook will aid in maintaining the paste’s connection to the bloom.
Step 2: Condition the white paste by warming and softening it in your hands while kneading it with a small quantity of shortening until it is smooth and workable. Make an oblong shape out of a 4mm piece of white paste, which is about the size of a pearl. To prevent it from drying out while creating your pistil centers, place the remaining white paste in a zip-top bag and seal it. Wipe off any extra gum glue before dipping a 26-gauge wire in it. More than halfway into the paste, insert the wire. To get the paste to stick to the wire, pinch and twist it at the base.
Step 3: Pinch the tip of the oblong form to flatten it using the tips of your fingers. The edges should be thin and ruffled with a ball tool. To give the ruffles shape and movement, gently bend them.
Step 4: To make a total of 5 pistils, repeat steps 2 and 3 using an additional 4 pieces of paste and floral wire. Feel free to experiment with more or less pistils since different varieties of peonies have different numbers of them.
Step 5: Bunch the pistils together to form a tight core while the material is still malleable. Stretch a piece of flowery tape to activate the glue. Wrap the wires firmly beginning at the base of the pistils and moving downward with the floral tape. Pistil’s center should be placed in a piece of foam to dry overnight.
Dust the pistil center in step six. Dust the body of the pistil centers with a moss-green petal dust. Make sure to dust the interior and exterior. Then apply bright pink dust to the pistils’ ruffled tips.
Step 7: Use edible paint to give the stamen a bright yellow color. Dry off. Create four clusters out of the stamen. Tape each group of stamen to the pistil center at equal intervals, one cluster of stamen at a time, about 1/4 inch higher than the center. Stamens should be spread out around the center. To work on the petals, set aside.
Make the peony petals in step eight. On a groove board, thinly roll out the purple paste. Take hold of the paste and turn it over so that the groove is now facing up. Give the cutters a little squeeze to make them look more rounded. Using the medium cutter, carve off the petal such that the groove is at the base and extends about 2/3 of the way up the petal. To help the petal release freely and to catch any stray pieces, run your finger over the cutter’s edge.
Step 9: Apply gum glue to the end of a 26-gauge wire. Wipe away any extra. Make sure not to poke the wire through the front of the petal as you insert it into the groove about halfway up the petal. To secure the paste to the wire, pinch at the base.
Step 10: Insert the petal into the veiner and squeeze to begin the veining process. Before veining your petals, lightly dust the veiner with cornstarch if you are concerned that the paste will stick.
Step 11: Set the petal on a thick piece of foam. Thinning the petal’s edges with a ball tool Use the smaller ball of the ball tool to cup parts of the petal from the edges toward the base, roughly 4-6 times per petal. If any of the petal edges rip, don’t be concerned. Your peony becomes more realistic as a result. Keep in mind that not every petal needs to have a uniform or consistent appearance. To make them seem more lifelike, give each one a little variation.
Step 12: Put the petal into an apple crate carton or shallow flower former to dry. Curve the petals’ tips to make each one somewhat distinct by adjusting the petals.
Step 14: Apply petal dust when the petals have dried fully. Sprinkle some sepia dust on the petals’ bases and outer edges. Make sure to brush both sides of the animals.
Step 15: Start with five petals of the same size to build the flower. Back the petals slightly so that they will cup around the center and the wires on the petals will line up with the wires on the center. Using floral tape, securely wrap two to three petals at a time, stacking the succeeding petals on top of the preceding ones. The petals should be adjusted so that they cup the center equally.
For the second row, add 6 more petals in step 16. The petals should be gently angled backwards so that the first layer of petals will be cupped and the wires on the petals will line up with the central wires. Each additional petal should be wrapped tightly with floral tape and placed over and between the first layer of 2-3 petals at a time. Petal spacing should be adjusted so that the second set of petals surrounds the first set evenly.
Add the final row of petals in step 17. With the 5 remaining large petals, repeat step 16 once more.
Step 18: Depending on how tight or open you want your open peony to be, move the petals around to open and close them. To make my peony look fuller and more blossomed, I like to spread out the last row of petals more.
Step 19: To establish the color and get rid of the dusty appearance, steam your petals for 3–4 seconds. If you have a steamer, you can use it. The tea kettle I use. A saucepan can also be used. Bring water to a rolling boil. Wave your flower slowly through the steam. Keep your fingers away from the steam since it might burn you severely if they come in contact with it. Place the open peony inside a foam dummy to finish drying.
