A family of parasitoids known as tachinid flies is one of the natural adversaries that Japanese beetle adults are most frequently attacked by. The family Tachinidae of true flies (Diptera) includes tachinids. Tachinid flies can range in size (3–14 mm) in colour, and there are over 1,500 species that have been identified (black, grey, and orange). Tachinid flies are typically strong and have thick hairs on their abdomen. Many resemble regular houseflies at first appearance, but they are completely different creatures. One of the most significant families of parasitic flies is the tachinid family, which provides biological control of several insects that are pests in agricultural, turfgrass, and ornamental systems. Tachinids are parasitoids that feed on a wide variety of caterpillars, sawfly larvae, beetle adults and larvae, earwigs, grasshoppers, and some actual bugs. Most crucially for our discussion, adult Japanese beetle victims are commonly attacked by tachinid flies!
Tachinid flies have unique and diverse egg-laying habits. In certain species, eggs are put on foliage close to a host insect. When the eggs hatch, the host insect eats the maggots when it feeds on the foliage, and the maggots later feed on and develop inside the host insect, killing it of course. In contrast to other species, tachinid females utilise lengthy ovipositors to pierce the host insect’s skin and insert their eggs. In still another species, the adult tachinid fuses her eggs to the exterior of the host, where they hatch and enter the body of the host as maggots. Tachinids that prey on adult Japanese beetles typically employ this tactic. Look for the white eggs that are affixed to the adult Japanese beetle’s body. No of how they lay their eggs, tachinid flies are all internal parasitoids of their hosts as larvae before emerging to pupate. Tachinids can have a single generation or several in a given year. Adult tachinid flies also consume liquids including flower nectar, aphid honeydew, and soft scales. We commonly notice tachinid fly adult activity in our studies on the use of conservation strips of blooming plants to conserve useful arthropods.
Numerous generalist predators, including as spiders, assassin bugs, predatory stink bugs, and birds, have also been reported attacking adult Japanese beetles. Given all of these predators, it would appear that natural enemies struggle to control adult Japanese beetles. The fact that Japanese beetles are unusual insects with Asian origins may have something to do with this. As a result, their natural enemy complex is probably less developed in the United States than it is in its natural habitat. Continue your efforts to protect natural adversaries so that their populations can “catch up with and lower Japanese beetle densities.” Also keep in mind that the Japanese beetle has a variety of natural enemies that target the white grub stage of the beetles.
