What are keratin smoothing treatments?
We spoke with Nicolas Flores, a celebrity hairstylist and keratin specialist at Sally Hershberger Salon in Los Angeles, who looks after Jenna Dewan Tatum, Melissa Alatorre, and Justine Marjan’s tresses. Nicolas answers all of our concerns regarding the semi-permanent frizzy hair cure in the video above, including which hair types are compatible, how long it lasts, and how destructive the process is to hair.
A keratin smoothing treatment coats the hair cuticle with a protein coating that removes frizz while also adding softness and shine. Depending on hair type, length, and fullness, the procedure might take anywhere from 1 to 3 hours. The hair must be properly shampooed before the treatment to remove any oils or product residue. After shampooing, I split the hair into four sections and apply the Keratin product in 1/2-inch to 1-inch subsections from root to ends, combing thoroughly to achieve even distribution. Then I start rough drying the hair until it’s approximately 75 percent dry, segment it again, then blow dry it smooth with a boar bristle round brush. When the hair is completely dry, I separate it again and flat iron the remaining parts with 3-8 passes of the flat iron, depending on how smooth and straight the customer wants her hair to be.
It makes hair smoother and easier to handle. It’s also fantastic after a color service because it seals in the color and adds a lot of shine. It can also benefit clients with unmanageable hair, cutting style time in half for both men and women.
I get a lot of clients who want to know what a keratin is and if they are a good candidate for it. However, it is not for everyone. If you have coarse, frizzy hair, a keratin treatment will reduce frizz and soften your hair, making style easier. I would absolutely recommend a keratin if you don’t like your curls or blow your hair out smooth on a daily basis.
I wouldn’t use a keratin on someone with fine, thin hair, straight hair, or hair that has been overprocessed. I don’t use keratin on angel fine-haired clients because the flat iron’s high heat can damage the hair and cause it to break. The same is true for hair that has been extensively processed, such as bleached and toned or bleached platinum blonde. If you’re a curly-haired client who adores your natural curl, I wouldn’t recommend a keratin treatment because it will tame your curl and pull out your wave.
How much harm can a keratin treatment do to your hair? Is it the same as having your hair colored?
Keratin treatments aren’t always harmful to the hair; in fact, they can be beneficial. Over time, our natural keratin protein in the hair begins to deteriorate, and a treatment can help restore it. When it comes to flat ironing during the procedure, here is when problems can arise. Flat ironing the hair to seal the product in is a necessary for a treatment, and your stylist will have to assess your hair type and condition carefully. In comparison to a virgin-haired customer, who’s hair won’t be as prone to damage with the iron set to a higher heat setting, you’d use a lower heat setting and take fewer passes on someone with a lot of highlights.
Before shampooing or getting your hair wet, most keratin product lines advocate waiting two days or 48 hours after treatment. This enables for more long-term results.
