Although it can be alarming to see ants crawling on your hydrangeas, you need not be concerned that the ants will harm your plants. Ants don’t consume the leaves or blossoms of hydrangeas.
Instead, ants are a symptom of aphids on your hydrangeas. Ants enjoy eating the honeydew residue that remains after aphids drain the sap from hydrangeas.
Ants and aphids coexist well. As a result of obtaining their own food from plants, aphids provide food for ants, who in turn defend them from predators like ladybugs. While the aphids and the ants benefit from this relationship, it is not ideal for you since, after the ants come, natural aphid predators won’t be able to efficiently manage the aphid population.
You must eliminate the aphids in order to get rid of the ants. You should be more worried about the aphids because they are the ones who hurt your hydrangeas.
As we previously indicated, try first washing your hydrangeas with a water hose to get rid of the aphids. The aphids will be cut off from their food source even if this won’t actually kill them. Before they can come back, many of them will pass away. Insecticides can be used to get rid of aphids (and consequently ants) if necessary, however they also hurt the aphids’ natural predators in addition to the aphids themselves.
What kinds of bugs are drawn to hydrangeas?
When they appear in the height of summer, these huge insects are impossible to ignore. These munch through the foliage of many other plants in your garden, including hydrangeas, and have lustrous green and brown leaves. Swarms of beetles have been known to destroy entire plants in a matter of days if you do not get rid of these right away. Although the plant is rarely killed by this, it looks very ugly for the remainder of the year.
How do I remove ants from my hydrangeas?
- Put ant-repelling scents around the plant’s base. Ants don’t seem to enjoy the fragrance of a select few things. Some of these include cinnamon or mint. Lay some gum with a mint or cinnamon flavour around the damaged plant’s base. Alternately, simply scatter some cinnamon around the plant’s base.
- Put ant-repelling food around the plant’s base.
- For this, a variety of recipes can be employed. One is to mix equal parts sugar and borax and spread this mixture around the plant’s base. Anyone eating the concoction will be killed by the ants. Try combining sugar and cornmeal as well. After being consumed, the cornmeal will expand and kill the ants.
- Design an ant trap.
- To catch ants, make a collar out of paper. Cut out a circle for this that is at least 8 inches (20.5 cm) in diameter. Make a cut through the centre of the circle, leaving a small opening large enough to loosely encircle the plant’s base. Vaseline should be applied to one side of the paper. Wrap the plant’s base in the collar, Vaseline side up. Vaseline will cause the ants to become trapped.
- Eliminate the ant odour trail.
- Ants dispatch scouts to look for fresh food sources. Ants typically move in a straight line because these scouts leave a smell trail for other ants to follow to the food. The scent trail is being followed by everyone. The directions to the flowering vine will be lost if this scent trail is eliminated. Keep an eye on the route that the ants are taking to reach your plant. Lay as much of that road as you can with a towel that has been soaked with ammonia or bleach. Pouring ammonia or bleach straight over the soil might harm the plant’s roots, so avoid doing this.
- Plant ant-repelling vegetation nearby.
- Henbit, geranium, garlic, aster, calendula, chrysanthemum, and mint are among the plants that have a reputation for keeping ants and other garden pests away. Ants can be deterred by planting these plants next to the afflicted plant.

My hydrangea has ants on it; why?

Do hydrangeas attract insects?
I’m aware that some lace caps feed the bees, but not all specimens do, as some have flatter heads than the “mop heads” kind.
However, on the Lacecap Hydrangea macrophylla Blue Wave in this image, I have observed several bees foraging. I intend to add more cultivars to this page in the future.
Which hydrangea varieties should you avoid?
Some hydrangeas are better left out of the garden if you are concerned that your planting decisions may benefit bees and other pollinators.
Since the flowers are infertile and provide no food to bees, French hydrangeas (Hydrangea macrophyllahortensis) often do not help pollinating insects.
These are the types with ball-shaped blossom heads, a compact circular “mop-head,” and no discernible flower anthers.
According to my personal experience, the unskilled foragers at most land, take a rapid flight away, or rest without eating.
Though even some of the kinds with “looser flower heads” are not particularly helpful to pollinators, it is advisable to concentrate on those that are popular with bees.
Do hydrangeas attract pests?
Despite the fact that many of the issues described below will harm hydrangeas’ appearance, there are few major pest and disease issues that impair their health. Visit our Hydrangea fact page for details on hydrangea choices, maintenance, and trimming.
Diseases Infected crop blight (Botrytis cinerea). On the petals, little water spots quickly enlarge into erratic brown blotches. The fuzzy grey growth of the fungus may cover brown, withered heaps of flowers. Leaf spots can develop when diseased petals have fallen on them, and flower buds may also be affected. Cool, humid, and moist weather are favourable for the development of disease. In plant waste, the causative fungus can live for an extremely long time. The wind can carry spores to healthy tissue. Use the powdery mildew prevention strategies outlined below.
On hydrangeas, leaf patches brought on by different fungus can appear. The fungus Cercospora is responsible for a widespread leaf spot disease in the northeast. On the leaves, tan dots with reddish brown edges develop. Leaf moisture should be kept to a minimum to prevent infection. Protective fungicides can be used ahead of infection if necessary. For hydrangeas that experienced a lot of leaf spots the year before and before wet weather, this might be advantageous. Additionally, removing diseased leaves during or after the season may help lower the amount of inoculum the next year.
All hydrangeas can have powdery mildew (Microsphaera penicillata), although bigleaf hydrangeas are most severely affected. Along with the typical white, powdery fungal growth on the leaf surfaces, there may also be yellow or purple spots on the leaves. Although this illness typically doesn’t harm the plant, some gardeners find it unsightly. The plants in crowded or shaded areas that encourage excessive humidity will be most severely affected by the issue. To get rid of the spores that could lead to new illnesses, clean up fallen leaves and decaying tissues. Except in extreme circumstances, chemical control is not necessary. Horticultural oils or potassium bicarbonate are two treatments for dusty.
Landscape plants may experience root rot (Armillaria spp.), particularly on oakleaf hydrangeas (H. quercifolia). Most vulnerable are plants that are stressed by drought or other reasons. Wilting on one or more shoots is one of the initial symptoms. Watering won’t make the leaves normal again. The remaining shoots will wilt and the hydrangea will die in a few weeks. Under the bark, at or close to the soil line, the fungus creates mats of white mycelia that resemble fan shapes. Additionally, infected roots frequently have black, shoestring-like Armillaria rhizomorphs on their surface, as well as in the surrounding soil and beneath the bark. Clusters of honey-colored mushrooms develop above the damaged roots in the fall following a significant rain.
The best line of defence against Armillaria root rot is good growing conditions. According to the results of the soil test, water during summer droughts and fertilise. There isn’t any chemical regulation. Soils with poor drainage are more prone to Phytophthora nicotian root rot. Similar symptoms to Armillaria species are seen. Where there is post-heavy rain flooding, avoid planting hydrangeas.
Blister rust (Pucciniastrum hydrangea), bacterial wilt (Pseudomonas solanacearum), viruses, and virescence are among other ailments that can harm hydrangeas (caused by a phytoplasma). On the underside of the leaves, the blister rust fungus spreads enormous quantities of orange spores. The bacteria P. solanacearum can blight young leaves and flowers, especially after a lot of rain during a hot day. Leaf mottling, spots, ring or line patterns, blossom colour fading, and deformation are all signs of viruses. Green, emaciated blooms or leafy branches emerging from the floral components are indicators of virescence.
Pests such as insects On the fresh growth of hydrangeas, aphid populations can occasionally reach considerable levels. Aphid eating might result in some leaf yellowing or distortion when there are a lot of them. Aphids also secrete honeydew, a liquid waste with a high sugar content. Under the aphids, sticky, clear honeydew may adhere to the leaves and other surfaces. On the honeydew, sooty mould, a dark fungal growth, may develop. Even while these fungi don’t affect the plant directly, a lot of sooty mould can prevent sunlight from reaching the leaves, which reduces photosynthesis. Additionally drawn to honeydew, ants may groom aphids by rubbing their antennae against them to encourage honeydew production. Additionally, they protect aphids from predators and parasites. Use an insecticidal soap or a powerful water spray to hose an aphid infestation down.
vine weevil in black (Otiorhynchus sulcatus). The roots of hydrangeas are harmed by the weevil’s larvae feeding on them. The tiny grubs first eat the little roots, then go on to nibble the bark off of the larger roots, frequently girdling them. Plants that have their crowns girdled start to turn brown and then yellow before dying. Adult is half of “Long, black, with a thorax that seems beaded and sporadic yellow hairs on the wing coverings. Adults make notches along the margins of the leaves as they feed at night while being unable of flight. Large larvae and adults emerge from hibernation between May and July. Egg laying starts after 3–4 weeks of eating. Larvae in the soil can be managed using insect pathogenic nematodes. When adults are feeding and just prior to the onset of egg laying, chemical control may be utilised, if necessary. Typically, this occurs in May, June, and July.
Round, brown sunken spots appear around the feeding puncture wounds of the four-lined plant insect (Poecilocapsus lineatus), shown below left, and the tarnished plant bug (Lygus lineolaris) (below right). Within soft stem tissue, eggs are deposited. Around the middle of May, they spawn, and the young bugs feed on the sap of the leaves. Around the middle of June, they reach maturity after five moults. About one-third of people are adults “long. The four-lined plant bug has four black lines running the length of its yellow wings. Leaf marks may develop into holes. The brown, 1/5 tarnished plant bug “Its back is long and has a yellow “Y” design on it. The four-lined plant insect has one generation every year, whereas the tarnished plant bug has two to five. These pests don’t typically need to be controlled, but if they do, apply insecticidal soap or ultrafine horticultural oil.
When present, hydrangea leaftiers, also called as Exartema ferriferanum or Olethreutes ferriferana, are highly visible. This insect can diminish the amount of blooms produced even if it has little effect on the health of the plant. Small brown and white moths that overwintered as pupae emerge as adults in the spring, mate, and lay their eggs on the ends of hydrangea branches (all types). The newly hatched caterpillars weave a few leaves together and graze on the inner (top) surfaces of the leaves and, if any flower buds are present, on the blossom itself. There can be a lot of the webbed-together leaves on a single plant; they resemble small tents. Larval feeding is finished in the summer, at which point the bug falls to the ground to pupate. Every year, there is just one generation. The leaves can be carefully peeled apart to remove and kill the caterpillar if control is desired or necessary. Biological pesticides using Bacillus thuringiensis kurstaki (Btk) as its main ingredient can be applied to caterpillars.
On oakleaf hydrangea, Japanese beetles can be a nuisance, but they rarely affect other varieties. Adults, which are metallic green, eat the veins and leaf tissue, leaving behind a lacy-looking’skeleton’ of the leaf. Knocking the beetles off the leaves and putting them in a container of soapy water can kill them. Even though they can be useful, insecticides should never be used during bloom to safeguard pollinators and other beneficial insects.
When in large populations, the rose chafer (Macrodactylus subspinosus), which occasionally feeds on hydrangea, can harm plants by skeletonizing their leaves. Additionally, they will consume flower petals, particularly those of white blossoms. Adult rose chafers are a little over 1/3 of an inch “Long, wiry beetles in a tan colour. Where sandy soils are present, they are common. Adults begin to emerge in the middle of June and feed for a month to six weeks. A few inches below the surface of the ground, females bury 24-36 eggs individually. They quickly erupt into grubs that consume the roots of grasses and other plants. They dig several inches down into the ground in late October to spend the winter. The next April or May, they emerge from the ground and pupate. 2-4 weeks later, beetles start to appear. Chemical control is typically ineffective since additional rose chafers can enter treated areas very quickly.
Tetranychus urticae, a two-spotted spider mite, feeds on leaves and can be identified by its stippled or freckled appearance and/or webbing. In hot, dry weather, spider mite activity is at its peak. They have piercing and sucking mouthparts similar to aphids, and each tiny “freckle” is an injury connected to a feeding location. In most cases, naturally occurring predators are able to manage spider mites on outdoor plants. Outbreaks of spider mites frequently follow the use of a broad spectrum insecticide that also kills beneficial insects in addition to the pests. Plants that receive adequate water during dry spells may resist spider mite damage.
In addition, nematodes, oystershell scale (Lepidosaphes ulmi), and stem, leaf, and root-knot nematodes can occasionally harm hydrangeas.
