The enormous, flat-topped clusters of bright-orange flowers on this bushy, 1 1/2-2 ft. perennial are appreciated. The leaves are primarily alternate, measuring 1 1/2 to 2 1/4 inches long, pointy, and smooth on the edges. The 2-5 inch wide yellow-orange to bright orange flower clusters are at the apex of the blooming stalk. The magnificent flower heads are set against a dark green backdrop of stiff, lance-shaped leaves.
In home gardens, this beautiful plant is usually cultivated from seed. Its vibrant blossoms are a magnet for butterflies. Pleurisy Root was given to Butterfly Weed because its tough root was chewed by the Indians as a remedy for pleurisy and other respiratory illnesses. Although it’s known as Orange Milkweed, this plant doesn’t have any milky sap.
Do butterflies like butterfly weed?

Is butterfly weed same as milkweed?
Butterfly weed is a milkweed family member (Asclepiadaceae). The genus Asclepias is named after Asklepios, the Greek deity of medicine. Tuberose refers to the tuberous (knobby and swellinged) roots of the plant.
Butterfly weed thrives in dry open areas and is abundant in the Midwest and Great Plains prairies and grasslands. This lovely native wildflower can be found from Maine to South Dakota, as well as the desert southwest of the United States and Florida.
Native Americans gathered fibers from the dried stems, which were woven into ropes and used to make fabric. Many tribes ate different sections of the butterfly weed. The dried leaves of butterflyweed and skunk cabbage were used to make a tea to treat chest inflammations in colonial America, earning butterfly weed the nickname pleurisy root. Until 1936, pleurisy root was included in the American Pharmacopoeia and the National Formulary.

Butterfly weed can be found in formal garden borders as well as meadow and prairie gardens. Because of its dense woody taproot, this wildflower is difficult to transplant. It is simple to grow from seed. Collect theseed as soon as the pods start to open. A three-month cold stratification period is required for butterfly weed seed. Female monarch butterflies that lay eggs favor the newer growth of the butterfly weed plant and produce roughly 700 eggs over a two- to five-week period. The egg stage lasts three to eight days, depending on temperature. Caterpillars, also known as larvae, hatch from the eggs and become ravenous diners of butterfly weed and other Asclepias genus milkweeds.
The monarch caterpillars are easily identified by their yellow, white, and black stripes. The caterpillars molt throughout this nine to fourteen-day period when they outgrow their skin. Instars are the intervals between molts.
The monarch caterpillars eat cardiac glycosides, which are toxins found in butterfly weed (and other milkweeds). This toxin is more concentrated in the caterpillar than in the plant’s leaves, and it persists through the next two phases of metamorphosis. Predators have learned to avoid them due to their brilliant warning colors and toxicity, as well as the fact that birds and other animals who eat them become sick and vomit.
The next step of metamorphism is triggered by hormones produced by the caterpillar, and the pupa stage is commonly known to as a chrysalis. Caterpillars aren’t always able to pupate on the butterfly weed. They can go up to 20 feet away from the garden in search of a suitable pupation site. The caterpillar hangs upside down after molting for the last time, and silk is generated from a spinneret at the bottom of its head. Under typical settings, this stage lasts eight to fifteen days after encasing, after which the change is complete. The black, orange, and white wing patterns become evident through the chrysalis just before the butterfly emerges.
Last year, after renovating a raised flower garden at the side of my house to contain butterfly weed, I discovered my first ever chrysalis.
The caterpillar had moved about 10 feet from the side flower bed to a column on my front porch to pupate. The wing patterns were apparent by the time I noticed it, and the chrysalis was gone in a matter of days. I’ve since discovered that they can pupate on just about anything and then live for another two to six weeks after emerging as adults. Monarch butterflies that travel south spend the winter for six to nine months.
How do you attract butterflies?
Brightly colored butterflies can be a welcome addition to your wildlife garden, not just for their aesthetic value, but also for their pollination abilities.
Plants that cater to the demands of all phases of the butterfly’s life cycle are used to attract butterflies. Sites to lay eggs, food plants for their larvae (caterpillars), places to create chrysalides, and nectar sources for adults are all necessities for insects.
Butterfly Garden Necessities
- Establish native flowering plants – Because many butterflies and native flowering plants have evolved together over time and rely on each other for survival and reproduction, it’s especially vital to plant native flowering plants native to your area. As adults and caterpillars, native plants supply nectar and foliage for butterflies. The Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center includes regional and state-specific lists of suggested native plants.
- Adult butterflies are attracted to red, yellow, orange, pink, and purple blossoms with flat-topped or clustered flower tubes that are flat-topped or clustered.
- Plant good nectar sources in the sun – From mid-morning until mid-afternoon, your major butterfly nectar source plants should receive full sun. Adult butterflies eat exclusively while they are in the sun. If your environment lacks sun, try including butterfly nectar sources in your food garden.
- Plant for continual blooming – Butterflies require nectar throughout their adult lives. Plant so that when one plant blooms, another begins to flower.
- Say no to insecticides – Insecticides like malathion, Sevin, and diazinon are sold as insecticides. These materials should not be used in or near the butterfly garden, or, better yet, anyplace else on your land. Even “harmless” insecticides like Bacillus thuringiensis can kill butterflies (while caterpillars).
- Feed butterfly caterpillars – There will be no adults if you don’t “raise” caterpillars. Adding caterpillar feeds to your garden can boost your chances of attracting rare and unique butterflies while also giving you another reason to cultivate a wider range of native plants. In many circumstances, a species’ caterpillars consume only a small number of plants. The leaf damage caused by some moth caterpillars, such as bagworms, tent caterpillars, and gypsy moths, is rarely seen in butterfly caterpillars.
- Provide a resting spot for butterflies – Butterflies require sunlight for orientation and to warm their wings before taking flight. Place flat stones in your garden to provide butterflies a place to rest and enjoy the sun.
- Give butterflies a place to drink and extract minerals from damp puddles – Butterflies frequently assemble on wet sand and mud to engage in “puddling,” or drinking water and extracting minerals from damp puddles. Fill a shallow pan with coarse sand and place it in the soil of your habitat. Keep the sand moist at all times.
Common Butterflies and the Plants Their Caterpillars Eat
- Wild black cherry, American and chickasaw plum, and black chokeberry are all examples of coral hairstreak.
- Wild black cherry, ash, tulip tree, willow, sweetbay, and basswood are all hosts for the Eastern Tiger Swallowtail.

What kind of milkweed attracts monarch butterflies?
Different milkweed species for different locations are included in Monarch waystation seed packs.
