If you intend to transfer the seedlings into the garden in clumps, flats are a fantastic option. One or more seedlings can be dug up at once and planted in a single, sizable hole. If not, you would have to untangle their roots, which might be challenging.
The plantable pot is the fourth option for seed beginning. These can be homemade pots made from newspaper and a mold, biodegradable peat pots (Jiffy is one brand), or CowPots that you fill with planting mix. Pellets that expand into mesh/peat-mix pots when submerged in water are another option. These containers have the additional benefit that they can be put in the ground alongside the seedling without needing to first remove it because the container will eventually decompose on its own.

Being a seasoned putterer, I wouldn’t often plant from flats either, but since they are a kind of discipline that makes you plant enough of one thing to really make a statement, I determined that this coming spring, that’s exactly what was needed in one shady area of the garden.
This old-timer will tell you what a rewarding weekend effort planting from flats can be in case there are any other people out there who have never done it.
Flats have existed for a very long time; you can see them in antique Flemish pictures, where they are populated by cabbage seedlings. They used to be built of thin redwood boards in California, but they are now manufactured of plastic. They typically have 64 plants inside and are around 18 by 18 inches in size, though some may have fewer due to larger plants. They are only 2 1/2 inches tall, hence the name “flats.”
The primroses I just planted (spaced 6 to 8 inches apart) covered a space measuring about 4 feet by 8 feet, with a few more to tuck here and there. It was a really beautiful flat of English primroses, and it was uncommon in that they were all the same color, pink, rather than being mixed. I discovered it at Burkard Nurseries in Pasadena, one of the few nurseries left that still stocks a large variety of flowers in flats and places special orders with the growers for unique flats of particular blooms or specific hues, like mine. The fact that these primrose flats were so large and robust, as well as the fact that he could provide a flat in any hue you desired, from orange to blue, truly thrilled third-generation nurseryman Frank Burkard Jr. Flats are the real deal for Frank and me.
As with any new planting, the soil must be prepared before planting flowers from flats. When planting, the ground should be damp, not soggy or dry. Flowers from flats have shallow root systems, so you must pack soil around them as you plant them to prevent immediate drying out. To dig the small hole, you don’t even need a trowel. You can use your hands, which is already a pleasurable experience.
Try one of two approaches to remove the plants from the apartments. Turn the flat on its side, allow the plants to start falling out, and then just pull them apart to separate them; this keeps the majority of the roots. If the roots are truly intertwined, use a regular spatula or putty knife to slice the plants out like cake. In either case, you’ll learn why I prefer planting from flats: the roots won’t be rootbound and circling like they would be in a pack or pot when they are cut or pushed apart. If too many roots are lost, the plants may briefly droop, but they rapidly produce the new roots they require outside in actual soil. There is therefore no stopping them once they get going, unless you simply forget to water.
One of the few occasions when standing there with a sprinkler and watering by hand makes sense is when the soil is damp and you only need to water the plants to settle them. Keep them continually moist for the first week, and as they grow established, gradually reduce the amount of watering. In around 4 to 6 weeks, fertilize with a liquid fertilizer from a watering can.
The ajuga I recently planted is one example of how ground coverings are always marketed in flats, but that’s a story for another weekend.
Size of a gardening flat
Although we occasionally use plastic plug flats, pots, and cell pack trays, we prefer to use our own handcrafted wooden trays since we can grow large, hardy plants in them and reuse the flats year after year.
To make things easier when fitting all the flats into your warm, sunny growing environment and when figuring out how much to plant, I advise picking a standard size for your flats. We use flats that are 12 by 24 inches and have a sizable garden. We create flats in two different depths: 3-inch flats for seeding and 4-inch flats for developing seedlings. I don’t advise renting flats larger than that because they become very heavy when filled, and none of us should have to lift more weight when it can be prevented with a little advance preparation.
A batch of flats is assembled at a time using little scrap boards that we collect. To utilize up the leftover wood, we typically end up creating a few 12-by-12-inch flats that are half the size. I prefer pine or Eastern red cedar. Ignore oak. It’s heavier than soft woods, splinters terribly, and is more difficult to work with. The glues and fillers in plywood and other manufactured boards can be hazardous to plants, so stay away from them. Avoid pressure-treated wood as well.
The thickest parts were cut into 12-inch-wide end boards that were 3 to 4 inches wide and 1/2 to 3/4 inch thick. I typically chop the acquired boards into the largest pieces feasible because I work with scraps. You can precisely lay out your cutting list if you’re purchasing or milling your own lumber. The bottom and side boards are only 1/4 to 1/2 inch thick. The side boards must be between three and four inches wide and 24 inches long. The bottom boards are a variety of widths and 24 inches long. In fact, if you’re inventive, you may utilize waney-edged or pieces that are obliquely cut for the bottoms of the flats.
Drill through the thinner sides and into the thicker ends to assemble the flats’ side walls first. Beginners in woodworking of all ages will enjoy this simple project. Use exterior-grade screws because they will frequently come in contact with water. After assembling the frame’s four sides, flip it over and fasten the bottom boards, leaving tiny spaces (up to 1/2 inch) between each one. This will make it easier to join boards of different thicknesses. In the event that your sides and ends were somewhat different widths, flipping the frame over will provide you with a flat surface to secure the bottom boards to. The spaces prevent the wet boards from buckling and aid in drainage. I always have ready-cut, pre-drilled boards on hand so I can perform running repairs as needed.
Line a 3-inch-deep seed-starting dish with two layers of newspaper (to stop the compost from falling out the gaps). To wick the water out of the compost, let the paper to extend halfway up the edges but never above it. We use a plastic dustpan to fill the flat with compost since it is the perfect width and performs far better than a trowel or a shovel. Make sure the flat is thoroughly and evenly filled by scrubbing the dustpan across the frame.
Create tiny slits for the seeds next. We push back and forth across the damp compost with a plastic ruler that has been pushed into the surface. For most crops, sow seeds at a rate of 3 to 5 per inch. Give the seeds a thin layer of cover (except for celery and some flowers, which need light). Indoor seedlings need water and growth.
It’s time to move the seedlings out into the deeper flats to continue growing until you transfer them outside once the seedlings have sprouted and the seed leaves have fully unfurled. In a similar manner, add compost to the larger flats. On a sheet of plywood measuring 12 by 24 inches, 40 wood pegs have been glued into holes to create a dibble board. There are eight rows down the 24-inch direction and five offset rows in the 12-inch direction. All of the pegs’ closest neighbors are spaced apart by approximately 2-1/2 inches. This provides the 40 plants with a fair amount of space—roughly 7 square inches per plant. We simultaneously create 40 holes with the dibble board by pressing it into the compost’s surface.
To remove the seedlings from the seed flat, we use a butter knife. The seedlings are then shaken apart using just their strong and disposable seed leaves. If necessary, we deepen the hole in the transplant flat with the knife before jiggling the seedling to position the roots downward in the opening. We firmly squeeze the compost around the plants with the other hand and the knife. We seed into 3-inch-deep flats for tiny plants like lettuce, but larger brassicas and tomatoes require 4-inch flats. Wait and drink.
This is a practical strategy to become independent in terms of gardening tools while avoiding adding to the issue of agricultural plastic litter. Giving plants more compost than is offered by plastic plug flats or cell packs will also help them grow stronger.
