Although hydrangeas are often mistaken for perpetual flowers, they are actually woody-stemmed shrubs that have a different root system than non-woody, soft-stemmed plants. Because of this, trying to root hydrangeas in water, as you might with certain houseplants, rarely works. For best results, plant hydrangea cuttings at the right time in potting soil.

Like growing roses, there are different ways to grow hydrangeas. When the year’s new stems have grown solid and robust, in late fall or early winter, “hardwood” cuttings obtained from hydrangeas can be rooted. However, it takes a long time for hardwood cuttings to root. 1 The majority of hydrangea producers in the industry employ “softwood” cuttings because they root more quickly and produce superior results.

When should hydrangea cuttings be taken?

Late July is the ideal time to take hydrangea cuttings. These cuttings are semi-ripe, which indicates that they come from the growth of the current season, yet they are old enough to have a woody base but are still soft at the tip. When the cuttings are added to compost, the woody foundation keeps them from decomposing.

How to take hydrangea cuttings

Use secateurs to gather material from the hydrangea stems and a knife to trim each cutting when taking hydrangea cuttings. You must place hydrangea cuttings into a pot of grittier compost because water cannot be used to proliferate them due to their woody nature. To keep your cuttings moist until the roots have formed, keep them in a propagator (usually after about six weeks). Winter in a frigid frame or anything comparable. How can a hydrangea cutting be rooted?

In 2-3 weeks, depending on temperature (faster in warm weather) and humidity, cuttings should start to grow roots. Some cuttings take as little as a week to take root. When a cutting is pulled and the pull is resisted, it is rooted. Reminder: It might not be allowed to reproduce plants that have been trademarked or registered.

I adore this simple approach. If you don’t have a lot of hydrangeas, you are only able to root a small number of new plants at once.

Before you start, a word of warning. Vegetative propagation is an activity that may become addicting, often resulting in thousands of plants and seedlings occupying every square inch of your home and garden as well as the gardens of appreciative friends and family members (like myself).

Taking the Cuttings

You’ll need a healthy hydrangea shrub with new growth as the first requirement (green stems). I’d advise choosing a non-flowering, green-wood stem that has been cut at the base at least two below a leaf/node pair if you plan to steal some from your neighbor’s yard.

One stem should yield five or more high-quality cuts. The optimum time to take them is in the early morning, though any time that they aren’t wilted is OK. If you want to know what you are growing, make careful to name them.

If you can’t use the stems right away, store them in the refrigerator overnight. They should keep for a few days, but if you have the time, I highly recommend trimming the cuttings (see below) before putting them in the refrigerator.

Rooting Media

One part medium to fine grade perlite, vermiculite (expanded lava), or sand, and one part peat/potting soil are required. I would strongly advise using screened or mason’s sand instead of perlite if you have access to it.

In order to assure excellent drainage with their automated misting systems, many propagators actually employ only sand. Fill the propagation trays or tiny pots to the top with the fully combined perlite (or sand) and peat moss.

The next step is crucial; soak the prepared tray for at least a half-hour in a cake pan or sink that has been nearly completely filled with water, gently misting the surface as needed.

This will prevent the rooting media from becoming dry in the centre, which could cause the plant to not take root.

This “Commercial potting mixes contain a wetting ingredient to prevent the hydrophobic phenomena, in which the media appears wet on the outside but is actually dry inside. When watering a potted plant that has become too dry, you’ve surely noticed the same thing: until you fiddle with it, it simply won’t absorb water.

One of the reasons I prefer a high sand content in my mix is because I can tell if your trays are too dry from their weight and appearance. Sand rarely has wet exteriors while having dry interiors, but it dries out much more quickly than a mixture that includes some peat.

For most people, the optimum rooting medium will have great drainage (Perlite or sand) and some capacity to hold a little moisture (peat).

I have successfully overwinter using a mixture of 60% native Nantucket sand (not from the beach because to too much salt) and 40% peat “ooted cuttings “trapped” in their growth trays in the late fall.

Trimming

To trim the cuttings, you will next need a pair of clean, sharp scissors or pruning shears. Trimming the leaves is intended to reduce water requirements while the plant is roots and to prevent crowding in the propagation tray.

To aid the plant in photosynthesis, I prefer to leave roughly 2 square inches per leaf. Without leaves, which takes longer and raises the risk of bacterial and fungal infection, I’ve rooted plants.

If you’re taking hundreds of cuttings of various cultivars, you might wish to wash your scissors in a 5 percent bleach solution (straight Clorox). I enjoy cutting almost perpendicular to the veins of the leaves.

Cut across the stem slightly above the first group of nodes from the bottom, being careful not to injure the buds.

I combine “Dip’n Grow,” an alcohol-based solution, according to the specifications for semi-softwood cuttings (19 parts water to 1 part Dip’n Grow).

The liquid solution evenly covers, and the alcohol aids in halting the spread of sickness. I gather a few cuttings by their leaves and insert one or two of the ends into the tiny cup they provide.

Each one is placed in the center of a propagation cell up to the hilt, or base of the leaves, after being submerged up to the base of the leaves for a count of five.

With the powder, the process is pretty much the same, but be cautious not to use too much on each cutting.

Without hormone, hydrangeas can root, but it takes longer and is less even than with it.

You can also try willow tea, which is a natural plant growth hormone that is high in auxins.

Misting, The “Art part

They will be prepared for their first “myst er mist” once all of your clippings have been glued. You’ll need a spray bottle that was empty, similar to the one your mother used for ironing.

If you lack an iron like I do, a Windex bottle will do. If you’re a skilled gardener and want to grow your plants outside, your hose may already have a “misting nozzle on it.

If you’re a complete moron like me, you might want to construct a DIY automatic misting bed controlled by a humidity switch or timer. Even with my misting bed, I often end up with a few tiny flats of strange cuttings that I simply couldn’t throw out lying around the yard, in the greenhouse, and even in the shower.

Funny thing is, as long as I remember them, they usually root at the same time as their brethren in the beds. While being careful not to overwater, I like to “water the cuttings in on my first mist, watering them until grains of media stream into the sockets where the stems reside” (media starts running out the holes in the bottom of the cells and over the top like the picture below).

I then spray them just long enough to soak the entire plant, or longer if the media has dried out.

Position, position, position A lot actually depends on you. How many times can you sprinkle them throughout the day? In what temperatures do you live?

Will You be there to protect them from an unexpected downpour or to bring them inside to avoid an early frost? Can you reach them before they dry out if the overcast day suddenly becomes a brilliant sunny one?

You must decide what is best for you. I’ve had success misting plants only once or twice a week after the first few days in a well protected, shady garden nook (wind will dry them out as well as sun).

As long as they are not exposed to wind or direct sunlight, I advise misting at least three times daily for the first week. If you are nearby, more is preferable because you can leave them in the sun for a little longer.

You may get away with more sun and less misting if you are raising them in an air-conditioned space. The goal (art) is to balance not allowing them get too wet with not letting them dry out or wilt too much before their next misting. As long as they are not wilting, let them stand in the dry.

They will take longer to root and have more opportunity to get affected by a bacterial or fungal illness if you grow them in heavy shade or keep them too moist. If you can, avoid misting in the evening.

As long as the sun isn’t too intense, a windowsill is great. Follow your gut instinct and don’t be scared to explore with different plants. After the first week, your cuttings will grow stronger and need less attention.

After two weeks, fresh growth will be seen. You will experience resistance while pushing on the stem by the end of week three,… You really must pluck one out, only to discover that it has dozens of fresh roots covering it. After a week, the roots have completely filled the cell and are prepared for transplantation. You are HOOKED!
