The first-ever winner of “The Masked Dancer,” Olympic gold medalist gymnast Gabby Douglas, received the show’s diamond mask trophy after being identified as Cotton Candy.
Despite competing against two skilled dancers in the finale, Douglas prevailed. Maksim Chmerkovskiy of “Dancing with the Stars” finished second to Sloth. And Tulip, who turned out to be Mackenzie Ziegler, came in third place (“Dance Moms).
After performing to Kesha’s song “This Is Me,” Douglas was revealed. Whether the Cotton Candy was a gymnast or an ice skater divided the panelists. Ashley Tisdale identified her teammate Simone Biles, while Paula Abdul identified Gabby Douglas. When Ken Jeong referred to Michelle Kwan, Brian Austin Green believed it to be Tara Lapinski.
The Masked Dancer got a lot of humor out of screening the tape and observing how Cotton Candy rapidly recovered and danced before Douglas’ first dance, which was performed while costumed as Cotton Candy, was suspended high in an acrobatic ring.

Third place Abdul and Green accurately predicted sloth and decided on Chmerkovskiy. Tisdale believed it was Hugh Jackman, while Jeong identified Channing Tatum.
Tisdale determined that Tulip in third place was Ziegler. Liza Koshy was chosen by Abdul, Lucy Hale by Jeong, and Sabrina Carpenter by Green.
“Obviously, having the head on was one of the hardest things for me,” said Ziegler. Because it was undoubtedly much larger than my actual head, it was challenging for me to maneuver around it during practice sessions while completing tricks while my partner lifted me up.
“I’m just so eager for everyone to see me because a lot of my supporters have been guessing me already,” Ziegler said, adding that many of her admirers realized it was her right away. And I always ask, “Are you the Tulip?” I’m eager to see how everyone responds when they understand me.
While Jeong and Tisdale had one right prediction going into the finale, Abdul and Green had two. Abdul finished the season with four accurate guesses, followed by Green with three, Tisdale with two, and Jeong with one at the end of the evening.

I don’t think it would be too difficult for the producers to hear me sing and recognize that it’s me, but they do have to sort of chose who they want to be on. That’s the only thing, then. Going on a dance show, which is even more out of character for me, I think was enjoyable for me. Even though it didn’t pan out this way, I reasoned in my head that it would be simpler for people not to recognize me on a dance performance. However, I was still guessed. However, it’s ironic because I sensed my impending capture the moment I spotted the clue packets.
My most popular song, “Back at One,” may have a real-life mention in the clue package. Therefore, after that incident, I said, “If you’re even somewhat awake, you should know that that’s me.” [Laughs.]
I believed that, given the shape of my physique, it would fit me perfectly as long as I am. I doubt that would have made much sense if I had been wearing an elephant costume. The cricket makes noise and bounces around, despite the fact that I dislike insects. It made sense since he is the only insect who can sing.
You see, what they don’t show on the show is that you spend a lot of time up there during the interview after the dance, and then they cut out the bits that are actually shown. Instead of just standing there, I reasoned that if they’re going to remember me in any manner, I should try to be as authentic as possible. Keep your character intact. You are not you; you are a cricket. Not even a human being, you. Who would act like a cricket? That’s what I did as well.
The performances, in my opinion, were good. The choreographers were very particular about how things were done throughout our rehearsals. “You must complete this exactly as shown in this or that.” I believe I accomplished what they asked of me. I therefore felt pleased with the performances. The show made me realize that it’s not really about how well I can dance. I can’t dance very well. There are a ton of additional factors, including the song chosen, the dance routines performed, the costume you pick—all of these things are taken into account, and no one comes out on top in this situation. You actually got to be on this major TV show, so that’s a win. Unfortunately, someone has to return home that evening. And I’m the one tonight.
You thanked your wife during the performance. Has she seen the program? What is her opinion?
She was there with me in reality, but she was unable to observe what we did. And I believe that my wife has done a great job of pushing me outside of my typical comfort zones and that trying something new is positive as long as you give it your best effort. She is my pillar of support, and I rely on her completely to help me make the right decisions. She was also present during the haphazard rehearsals to support me. She is my biggest admirer and supporter, and to me, she represents everything. So, you see, I believe she finds it amazing that I actually went out and accomplished this.
Yes, I believe it is natural to feel let down when your character is named. And Paula [Abdul] actually guessed me, so I knew that would be the case. I suppose I anticipated it. But when you hear that name, something else happens. And it’s challenging, isn’t it? Like, I don’t know if I could hide the disappointment on my face. I’ll check tomorrow. I certainly hope they didn’t include it in the edit. However, it’s also natural to want to prevail, or at the very least, to hang around for as long as you can. However, I won’t leave the public’s attention for another five minutes when they learn that’s me tonight. So that’s a big victory.
That it’s okay to feel uncomfortable and do something you normally wouldn’t. That, in my opinion, is a lesson in life. It won’t all go precisely how you want it to when you’re trying to reach somewhere. And even if you might encounter some things you don’t like, you still need to find a method to get where you’re going. And it would have been simple to intervene during it and say, “It is awful. This is not what I want to do. I’m just going to resume my regular activities.” However, I simply am not that kind of person. Again, my wife would never permit me to behave in that manner. In no way am I a quitter. Therefore, doing something different from what I usually do was amazing. It was fantastic since there is no way I could have done that without a mask on. [Laughs.]
