The blossoms grew so well-liked that garden break-ins and bulb thefts became frequent occurrences. A financial bubble known as “Tulip Mania” that occurred in the middle of the sixteenth century resembled the recent crashes of the tech and real estate markets.

When to Visit

The two busiest days of the festival are always the Saturdays. We strongly advise visiting during the week if you can because you will escape the vast majority of crowds. You will have the best opportunity to see and appreciate the festival’s beauty queen, The Tulip, during the week.

How long did the first Tulip Time last?
During a meeting of the Woman’s Literary Club in 1927, Tulip Time’s concept was first presented. Due to its close ties to the Netherlands, Miss Lida Rogers, a biology teacher at Holland High School, proposed that Holland adopt the tulip as its flower and set aside a day for a festival. She spoke extensively about the region’s distinctive sand dunes, lovely trees, clean water supply, pure milk, and several playgrounds in her speech that day, which she termed “Civic Beauty.” She urged the planting of more trees and, in response to the Chamber of Commerce’s request for a suitable suggestion, advised that tulips be planted in each yard. Come Down to Holland in Tulip Time, a poem, was recited by her when she finished.
Under Mayor Ernest C. Brooks, the City Council authorized money in 1928 to buy 100,000 tulip bulbs from the Netherlands. The city parks and other locations were to receive these bulbs for planting. An initial schedule had a “Tulip Day. Residents of Holland could purchase bulbs for one penny each.
Thus, thousands of tulips bloomed in 1929, and Holland welcomed tourists to visit during a week in May. Tulip Time will now be held annually, with Mrs. Ethel Telling serving as the inaugural chairman. This decision was made because to the interest generated. The Festival was planned with an emphasis on Dutch clothes and wooden shoes under Mrs. Telling’s direction. Following the natural resurrection of old Dutch customs and traditions, tourists and locals found the Festival to be both distinctive and picturesque.

Ether Perry, a gym teacher for high school ladies, also taught Dutch folk dances to the Dutch Villagers, afterwards known as the Klompen Dancers, in 1933. The first year, there were 12 dancers, and they performed to the song “Where, Oh Where, Has My Little Dog Gone? There are currently about 1,400 dancers, including about 675 alumni dancers.
Genuineness of the dancers Since the beginning, Dutch Costumes has been a top priority. One of the earliest operettas featured costumes with delft blue skirts, bodices, white organdy caps, and aprons of the musical comedy variety. The transition to real clothing, many of which had black skirts and aprons, initially seemed uninteresting, but when additional colorful costumes from different provinces were added, the variety increased significantly.
Despite the Tulip Time Festival’s suspension during World War II, interest was maintained by a flower exhibition and musical performances. In 1946, a four-day Festival was revived with all the splendor and unique elements of the earlier nine-day Festivals. Early on, Tulip Time organizers discovered that visitors enjoyed parades, Klompen Dancing, flower exhibitions, tulips, and music. The majority of times, attempts to stray from this formula have failed.
In 1947, Tulip Time celebrated Holland’s 100th anniversary. Holland was prepared to commemorate a significant turning point in the history of Tulip Time after bridging several obstacles. Bulbs of tulip were once more offered, but in small numbers. In reality, the Netherlands “rediscovered Holland, Michigan, and our Dutch links were deepened, many of them out of gratitude for the assistance our local inhabitants had provided to the Netherlands during World War II.
The inhabitants of the city of Amsterdam sent a barrel organ to the Dutch people in 1947. One of the items that arrived aboard a unique Dutch ship that sailed into Holland Harbor was this one. Throughout festivities and later in Tulip Time parades, the barrel organ was frequently performed. The barrel organ is presently on exhibit at Windmill Island and provides entertainment for hundreds of tourists during Tulip Time and the entire tourist season after extensive repairs and renovations in the late 1990s.
The inaugural year for a Michigan governor to take part in the street cleaning rituals was 1947. Governor Kim Sigler made the decision to join the Dutch burghers, which was a major hit with the photographers. Since then, every governor of Michigan has dressed up. Governor George Romney was even depicted in Time Magazine’s “People page sweeping streets” during the height of his fame. During his twelve years as governor, G. Mennen (Soapy) Williams visited Tulip Time almost every year.
Tulip Time maintained a similar course over the years, incorporating more cultural elements and attracting larger and larger crowds. Every year, the number of Klompen Dancers grew, and starting in the middle of the 1970s, some males joined in as well.
Tulip Time was discovered by group excursions in the 1960s and 1970s, and package bus tours gained popularity. This was a positive development because many people began taking buses, which helped to some extent solve the parking issue on city streets. Many of the inexpensive tours included lodging in private homes. Communities as a whole worked together to keep busloads of people in one place. Some excursions that promised five-star hotel accommodations ended up staying as far from Holland as Toledo, Ohio.
Parade bleacher seating was a welcome addition in the 1970s that both met a long-standing demand and helped the Festival financially. Most of the bleachers are advantageously positioned close to Kollen Park and the Civic Center, which serves as the Tulip Time Festival headquarters. The business was so profitable that Tulip Time donated $10,000 to Holland’s float in the 1976 Tournament of Roses Parade in Pasadena, California, which kicked off the bicentennial of the United States.
For Tulip Time, 1976 was a historic year. Holland’s entrance in the Tournament of Roses Parade, a massive basket of tulips hung between two windmills, garnered a lot of media attention. The culmination of the four-day Tulip Time Festival was President Gerald R. Ford’s participation in the Parade of Bands. He was accompanied by his wife Betty and their daughter Susan. Two days later, Jack, the President’s son, traveled to Holland.
The initial discussions to extend the 4-day Festival took place in 1986 as a result of the tulips blooming for the majority of May. After a while, the Festival expanded to a 10-day event in 1991. Due to a lack of hotel rooms, visitors and motorcoach groups were forced to travel to Holland prior to the Festival in order to see the tulips. This alteration was made to better accommodate them. 350 hotel rooms were available at the time of the initial negotiations in 1986. They numbered 773 in 1991. The Festival thrived over the following five years. In 1997, a new weather pattern started to emerge. The tulips’ early growth and flowering were altered as a result of global warming.
The Festival Board of Directors and Staff decided to move the Festival up one week earlier and shorten it to 8 days in the summer of 2001 due to the continuous warm weather trends and global warming. This would make it possible for the Festival to better coincide with the tulip bloom.
