Through the acts of bees or other pollinators distributing the pollen, the daylilies in the garden will occasionally cross-pollinate with one another.
If the wind blows everything together and the pollen is able to touch the pistil, they can also self-fertilize if the stamens are long enough to reach the tip of the pistil.
In most cases, however, there is no need to cover the pistil while dipping daylilies in the garden. The pistil will be covered with a generous amount of pollen from your chosen source, ideally producing the cross you were hoping for.
Can daylilies be cross-pollinated?
Around my house, there are daylilies of all different species and hues. Someone warned me that my hybrids will mix with the orange lilies blooming across the road and make them all orange. Will this actually occur? Is there anything I can do in that case?
There is no need to be concerned about the orange daylilies, sometimes known as “ditch lilies,” having a negative effect on your daylilies. When plants cross-pollinate, the offspring, not the parent plants, undergo modifications. Therefore, whether your collection of daylilies or the orange ones beside the road cross pollinate, the resulting plants will not look exactly like their parents. The tough orange daylily frequently outcompetes hybrids, and if left unchecked, it could take over the garden, which causes uncertainty. For this reason, a lot of gardeners believe that their hybrids have transformed into orange daylilies. For a neater appearance and to stop reseeding, deadhead daylilies. Alternatively, select out any undesirable offspring to preserve your desired hybrids as the dominant species.
Daylilies are able to self-pollinate.
If correctly pollinated, the majority of daylilies will produce seed. Some daylily plants will self-pollinate and produce seeds. The resulting seed may be grown easily and should produce your first flowers in one to two years.

Both male and female components can be found in daylily flowers. The fluffy, golden-yellow pollen is held in the male anthers, which normally have six. The female pistil, which is distinct from the anthers in that it lacks a pollen bag, emerges from the center of the flower on a long, thin stem. Simply place some pollen from an anther on the tip of the pistil of the same or different flower to perform the pollination. Break a pollen another stem from the bloom to accomplish this. While dabbing the pollen on the receiving pistil, hold it by the anther stem to avoid touching the pollen with your fingertips. All it takes is that. You will be able to tell in a few days if fertilization occurred when a tiny bulbous growth at the base of the old, dead bloom, known as the seed pod, appears. DON’T PICK OFF THE OLD BLOOMS (DEADHEAD). Inadvertently removing the early stage of the seed pod may result from doing so.
Additionally, you should be aware of:
- Not every attempt at pollination results in a seed pod. Similar to other plants and animals, timing and fertility can vary. You have a larger probability of success if you have more plants. Your chances of producing seed increase as more blooms are pollinated.
- Temperature has an impact on fertilization. Once the anthers have opened to reveal the powdery pollen, early morning hours are ideal. Some daylilies’ fertilization will start to suffer at temperatures exceeding 80 degrees.
- After pollination, affix a little merchandise string tag to the base of the flower if you want to keep track of your pollination. The name of the pollen parent and pod should both appear on the tag. Instead of attempting to write it all on the little tag, use your own code to insert the information there.
Seed gathering:
The successful seed pods will have significantly expanded in 6 to 8 weeks. At this point, you need to check them every day. You can select the pod once the top starts to separate from the body. Carefully pry apart the pod and take out the glossy, black seeds. To break any dormancy that may otherwise prevent germination, place the freshly harvested seeds in a zip-top bag and place the bag in the bottom drawer of your refrigerator for at least 3 weeks.
Planting and germination
Use any dependable planting media that has been approved as suitable for seed starting. You can mass-plant in nursery pots that are at least one gallon in size or use seed trays with individual cells. You can now crush each seed before planting, if you’d like, to get rid of those that aren’t firm and won’t likely germinate. If using nursery pots, fill to within an inch of the top with wet medium. In either case, bury the seed no deeper than 1/4 inch into the medium. Don’t worry about achieving the precise depth because it is not crucial; instead, just make an effort to stop going deeper. A thin layer of tidy play sand or builders sand should be used after this. Also, the depth of the sand should be roughly 1/4 inch. This layer prevents bacteria and fungus from growing on the surface. Use a light spray to thoroughly water the plantings so as not to wash the seeds out of their place in the media.
Place the seedlings in full sun to part shade, keeping in mind that you will need to be able to provide daily care for the next 6 to 8 weeks, essentially making sure the planting medium doesn’t dry up. You have greater flexibility in this area if you use nursery pots because they won’t dry out as quickly. For the first few days, keep an eye on the moisture level of the medium to get a sense of how frequently you’ll need to feed water. In general, the sand’s top layer should always be damp.
You will start to notice tiny sprouts poking through the sand after around 10 days. Not every seed will grow. Success rates of 60% are average. Some seeds could take a month or more to germination. Albino seedlings may emerge, but after they have consumed all of the nourishment in the seed, they will perish. That is typical. You can begin fertilizing with a Miracle Grow half-strength solution every third day once the initial seedlings have opened their second leaves. Up until the seedlings are about 6 inches tall, keep watering and fertilizing them. After that, the seedlings can be moved into the garden or larger pots, leaving at least a 4 to 6 inch spacing between each one.
The most crucial thing to keep in mind is that daylilies require wet growing conditions in order to thrive and produce top-notch blooms. With these infants, you’ve come a long way; don’t deny them the water they require, and you’ll be rewarded.
If your seedlings were planted in their growing bed in late September or early October, that is assuming your seedlings were placed in their growing bed in early August. However, the likelihood of blooming the following spring decreases, thus later planting is OK. Create a lush planting area with soil that has been modified with compost, peat, or other organic materials. The addition of sand will break up any thick clay soil before you add the nutrients. Because it might easily dry out at this time of year, keep the soil moist.
Start weekly fertilization with a half-strength Miracle Grow solution once a week has passed. Change to twice-weekly fertilization with full-strength Miracle Grow after three weeks. One fertilizing each week is sufficient during the colder months of December and January. Additionally, beginning in mid-February, liberally spread Milorganite fertilizer throughout the planting area. Lowe’s and Home Depot both have milorganite. Continue doing this until June. Considering that milorganite won’t burn, you shouldn’t worry about applying it excessively. Up until mid-May, or until your plants have reached their maturity size and some bloom scapes have started to emerge, keep fertilizing them. The presence of weeds will reduce competition for nutrients, water, and light in the planting area.
The emergence of bloom scapes heralds the approach of the most thrilling period. Once bloom has started, getting out of bed early in the morning to check what fresh flower has opened for the first time won’t be a problem. Enjoy.
Lilies can they cross-pollinate?
Picking two different lily species, cultivars, or variants is the first step in cross-breeding lilies. How are flowers hybridized?
A hybrid plant is one that was created through the cross-pollination of two or more unrelated plant species by gardeners. The male component of one plant’s bloom, the stamen, is used to pollinate the female component, the pistil, of another plant’s flower. The pollinated flower’s fruit is then harvested, and its seeds are grown.
Plant hybridization often aims to combine the advantageous qualities of two-parent plants, but breeders have no control over which traits will be passed on. However, hybrid plants typically outperform their parent plants in terms of disease resistance, seasonal hardiness, and yield. Additionally, plant hybridization has boosted biodiversity.

What should you do with daylily seed pods?
Daylily seeds should be collected for propagation in the late summer or early fall, after the pods have dried completely and started to break apart. Slice open the seed capsules over a basin or other container. If sown right away after collecting, the seeds have a better chance of germinating because their viability soon declines. Although stored seeds have a significantly lower germination rate than fresh seeds, they can be retained until spring if kept in the refrigerator.
