The snake plant, like many succulents, is prone to root rot in wet conditions, and droopy snake plant leaves are common when the plant is overwatered.

When the top 2 or 3 inches (5-7.5 cm) of soil is entirely dry, water the snake plant deeply until water runs through the drainage hole. Regardless of the circumstances, a plant near a heat vent or a sunny window will require more frequent watering. Many people, however, find that watering every two or three weeks is plenty.

Allow the pot to drain freely before reinstalling it on the drainage saucer by watering around the inside border of the pot to keep the leaves dry. Wait until the top of the soil is completely dry before watering again. Water carefully during the winter months, only when the leaves appear to be wilting. It’s typically adequate to do it once a month.

How do you fix a droopy snake plant?

The most typical reason for a Snake Plant’s inability to grow straight up is that the light is coming from the side, and the plant is growing towards it.   • Snake plants are slow-growing and rarely require repotting (they actually grow better when pot-bound). Low-light plants may need to be repotted every 5 to 10 years. Expect to transfer snake plants in stronger light every 3 to 5 years.

Why are my snake plants curling?

Although it is necessary to pot your snake plant in a well-draining pot, you also want your plant to look good and add to the attractiveness of your home. You may have some ornamental pots with adequate drainage in which to plant your snake plant, but I prefer to place it on a drip tray or within a more elegant planter. If the root rot has progressed far enough, dissect the plant and keep just the healthy parts. Take cuttings from healthy foliage and root them to propagate a new plant if the entire base is compromised.

Prevention

When the top 2-4″ of the soil has completely dried up, water the plants. During the cooler, winter months, when the plant is dormant, this could mean just watering it every 1-2 months.

Snake plants are perfect for the less-than-careful gardener. For weeks at a time, you can go without watering them. Your snake plant will easily endure 3 weeks or more without water, even in hot, arid conditions, so you won’t have to bother about all the methods to water houseplants while on vacation.

How do you know when your snake plant needs water?

You’ve chosen a low-maintenance indoor plant. The upkeep of a snake plant is simple. When the soil dries out, water the plant to keep it looking its best. Touching the soil once a week is the best way to detect whether your plant needs watering. It’s time to water when the top inch of soil feels dry.

  • Fill a watering can halfway with room temperature water and water your plant. Allow an hour or so for the plant to soak up the water that drains into the saucer. Any water that has been left out for an extended period of time should be discarded. Alternatively, you can submerge the plant in a sink or bathtub and hydrate it with chilly tap water. Allow the plant to completely drain before returning it to its original spot.
  • Snake plant care does not necessitate a lot of fertilizer. You can feed the plant with a houseplant fertilizer once or twice a year, following the package guidelines.

How often should you water snake plants?

Always check your plant’s watering requirements as soon as you get it. Check the moisture level in the soil first to make sure it isn’t soggy in the root zone before giving your plant a drink. Consider aerating your plant’s soil before watering it for the first time. Aerating the soil allows it to breathe and release moisture.

Between waterings, Sansevieria prefers to dry fully. Overwatering is the most typical mistake made with these plants. You won’t need to water your plant more than once every 10 days (at most) during the growing season, even if it’s in plenty of bright indirect light. Watering might be as seldom as once a month during the cold months or if the plant is in low light. Regardless of where you put it, make sure the soil on your Sansevieria is completely dry between waterings. Because Sansevieria is prone to root rot, it’s critical not to water the plant if the soil in the root zone at the plant’s base is damp.

Rotate your plant on a regular basis to guarantee even development on all sides, and dust the leaves frequently to ensure optimal photosynthetic activity. Take advantage of the opportunity to dust the leaves and inspect the undersides for bugs while you’re at it. Once every couple of months, clean your leaves with a microfiber cloth and a fine-spray mister.

Note that if you’re potting your snake plant in an organic container, you need use a waterproof saucer underneath to protect your floors and table tops, as humidity can build up beneath the pot and damage surfaces.
