Why Cacti Are Awesome

Look no further than the interesting cactus if you’re seeking for methods to liven up a space or add a little individuality to your house. They not only come in a wide variety of sizes and forms, but they also require very little upkeep. Here are ten reasons why you should surround yourself with more cactus.

There are over 2000 species to choose from!

There is undoubtedly something for everyone, whether they prefer something short, tall, furry, or smooth. The “Spikey Pack” is the simplest way to begin a collection and a fantastic way to find new favorites.

Because geometry is cool!

The intricate and fascinating geometric patterns of cactus are quite amazing, even if you despised that lesson in school. According to some hypotheses, the tubercles and ribs’ spiral arrangement not only gives the plant its structure but also permits expansion and contraction in response to watering. Others have even proposed that they serve as small fins that keep the plant cool in hot weather by casting tiny shadows on it. Awesome.

Not all of them sting!

Many cacti species have a woolly coating, and others have a rubbery texture and no thorns either! But be careful, because beneath that soft surface there might still be thorns. Espostoa “Peruvian Old Lady,” Cereus “Ming Thing,” and Echinopsis “Domino Cactus” are a few examples of these.

Blooms!

Any collector will tell you unequivocally that the reason they adore their cactus so much is that they have such spectacular flowers! If given the right amount of water, fertilizer, and sunshine, all cacti species are capable of producing flowers. Although some people (not all) take many years to do this, the wait will be well worth it!

(Your Gymnocalycium ‘Purple Moon Cactus’ would be a good fit here; I didn’t have many photos of their blooms.)

Super easy to propagate.

When collected during their normal growth season, many kinds will readily root and can be simply propagated. Here, I used clean, sharp scissors to trim an offset off a Mammillaria elongata ‘Copper King,’ which I then let to callous for at least a week (it’s a good idea to treat both incisions with sulfur powder).

The branch should be planted in a small pot filled with a 50/50 mixture of potting soil and pumice, and should be covered with a thin layer of grit to help it stand upright. Water as soon as possible, but wait to do so until the soil feels fully dry to the touch. Tweezers or (tongs if it’s big!) can be used to tug on it to check for roots every couple of weeks. If you encounter resistance, it has taken root. Note: Less water will be needed during cooler months.

Improves air quality and gives a better night’s sleep!

Radiation and bacteria abatement are supposedly best achieved by cacti. They take in carbon dioxide at night and expel oxygen, which helps you have the happiest dreams!

They come in blue.

Must I say more? This Tephrocactus geometricus has a glaucous blue coating that serves as a built-in sunscreen and helps shield the plant from the weather. Melocactus azureus, Myrtillocactus geometrizans ‘Blue Candle’, and Myrtillocactus geometrizans cristata are more examples of cacti with this blue tint.

So that you can create your own Frankenstein plant.

One of the most intriguing things that can be done with cactus is grafting, by far. Actually, it is a method for swiftly growing species that are by nature sluggish growers or do not produce offsets. When grafted directly onto a rootstock, the top portion (the scion) is spared the energy-intensive process of producing roots. Grafting is also used to assist cultivar mutants that lack chlorophyll, like the Moon Cactus, survive. This fascinating plant typically has Hylocereus undatus (also known as dragon fruit), a rootstock that aids in photosynthesis. The moon cactus, which lacks chlorophyll and is vividly colored, would not be able to thrive without it!

Low Maintenance

Since cacti are experts at retaining water, they will survive till you return even if you’re continuously busy (who isn’t?). A cactus’ spines are essentially modified leaves, and along with their waxy coating, they help the plant hold onto moisture for extended periods of time.

Your new cacti won’t need much from you; just give them a little water, some sunshine, and some love, and they’ll give you back for years to come!

What makes a cactus so unique?

As members of the succulent family, cacti are noted for their ability to store water in their internal structures. Cacti don’t have leaves and will allow their stems to serve as water storage, unlike other succulents that do. The enormous, thick stem aids in serving as a water storage “tank.” This explains why the majority of cacti have massive, oblong stems. This plant utilizes all the water that has been stored in its stems while it waits for the infrequent little desert rains during the dry season.

Why are cacti the best plants to grow?

Cacti plants, as was already mentioned, fill your home with a lot of energizing and uplifting energy. As long as you know how to care for them, these are easy-to-grow plants that can grow anywhere. Additionally, there is a ton to discover about your cactus plant. Growing these succulents inside has several advantages, and you will pick up a lot of knowledge in the process. You’ll learn how to re-pot them, propagate them, and learn about the various kinds of cacti plants.

Improves air quality

Human humans cannot life without plants, which are amazing. As a result, having some in your home helps to make the advantages more accessible to you. Cacti and other green plants release oxygen while absorbing carbon dioxide from the atmosphere. One of the fundamental methods for raising air quality is this.

Remember that oxygen is necessary for everyone to breathe and for the body to clear itself of dangerous poisons.

These plants can enhance air quality in additional ways besides only absorbing carbon dioxide. Over 107 volatile organic compounds (VOCs) were found in the air inside one of NASA’s space stations in a 1973 scientific investigation that was carried out by the agency’s experts.

Residents of the station frequently experienced breathing issues and other respiratory issues that were later known as Sick Building Syndrome (SBS). In order to address the problem, experiments were started, one of which involved cultivating plants inside the space station.

Growing plants inside the station for a few months revealed that the VOC levels had not only decreased but also completely disappeared.

You could cut the amount of air contaminants in your home by more than 50% if you have cacti plants. Additionally, indoor plants can reduce bacterial growth and dust accumulation in your interior environments.

Always keep in mind that there are several toxins in your home, including those produced by pet dander, carpets, plastics, paint, and specific cleaning chemicals, which can be harmful when inhaled. Cacti plants can considerably lessen the effects of such contaminants.

Cacti plants have unique therapeutic and medical properties

That is accurate. Many individuals communicate with their plants in order to feel better. It is in our nature to form close bonds with the things we value in life, whether they be other people or inanimate objects. Similar to how some people converse with their dogs, others converse with their plants.

The amazing thing about this relationship, though, is that the plants themselves gain something from it as well. In fact, some gardeners claim that conversing with plants can spur their accelerated and robust growth.

Speaking releases carbon dioxide, which is necessary for plants to produce food. As a result, your houseplant receives more carbon dioxide when you speak to it near, accelerating photosynthesis.

In contrast, indoor cacti plants have a way of calming and comforting you. A single cactus plant can actually provide you with a lot more than you would have thought. In theory, there are countless advantages to cultivating cacti inside.

Boost productivity

A cactus plant in your office, especially a home office, has been scientifically proven to boost productivity by over 12%. This is because they contribute to a decrease in the air’s carbon dioxide content.

You may feel exhausted, restless, agitated, and get headaches as a result of breathing air with too much carbon dioxide, which will reduce your productivity. Your mind will become more clear and you will be able to concentrate better if you are able to regulate the amount of carbon dioxide in the air you breathe.

Your life may improve as a result of your increased productivity since you will feel better about yourself and your work. After all, you might obtain a job promotion and a pay increase if your manager detects a big improvement in your output.

Growing a cactus in your home can enhance your memory

The University of Michigan in the United States conducted psychology studies that showed a wide range of astounding advantages one experiences when engaging with nature. Walking through a park, viewing images of plants, or cultivating plants inside your house are all examples of interaction.

According to the study, spending time in nature can increase memory by up to 20%, which will improve one’s performance at work and school.

As a result, it is a good idea to cultivate cacti plants at home and set them in your study room, home library, home office, or any other space where you and your children generally complete your work.

Cactus Fact #1: The Thorns are Actually Spines

What we typically think of as thorns on cacti are actually spines, which are actual plant parts, specifically leaves. That’s how it used to be, at least. Spines have grown from this during the course of evolution, ensuring the cacti’s survival even in the harshest environments.

Phytochemically, “spines are distinct from “thorns: spines are modified leaves, and thorns are modified branches, according to Wikipedia.

Cactus Fact #2: The Spines are Weapons, Sun Protection, Drinking Straw and Coat

Cacti would literally be discovered as food for animals in their arid surroundings. This is avoided by their spines. They are capable of much more, such as shielding the plant from sunburn by reflecting sunlight. However, during chilly nights, they keep out the cold. The cactus can absorb the water that forms when mist clouds condense on their spines. Additionally, they become entangled in the fur of nearby animals. They split out in other places, where a new cactus can emerge. Consequently, they assist in the spread as well.

Cactus Fact #4: You Can Eat Them

The orange-red fruits of the prickly pear, which belong to the genus Opuntia, are available in every delicatessen. However, the plant’s green sections are also edible. They become a sour, flavorful vegetable when steamed or fried. The oldest cactus cultivation in the world, which has existed in Erfurt since 1685, shows what can be conjured up from the thorny plants and put on the table.

Cactus Fact #5: One Can Get Intoxicated with Them

Three thousand years ago, the Native Americans learned that some cactus species were intoxicating. They chewed on plant fragments because they thought it would bring them closer to the gods. The peyote cactus, which contains mescaline, is unquestionably the most well-known. In 1888, Louis Lewin was the first to approach this phenomenon scientifically. He was able to extract “anhalonin” after looking at the peyote cactus. Arthur Heffter succeeded in isolating pure mescaline in 1896. In 1919, Ernst Spth completed the first total synthesis. He thereby established the framework for the drug’s synthetic manufacture. The UN Convention has deemed it unlawful everywhere since 1971. Possession of mescaline carries a maximum five-year jail sentence in the USA.

Cactus Fact #6: You Can’t Drink It

Adventure writers are responsible for the notion that a cactus can relieve a desert traveler’s thirst. When you cut open a cactus, all you find is a thick gel that is poisonous. It is equally impossible to remove water from it on-site as it is to do so with shower gel.

Cactus Fact #7: You Can Make Furniture Out of Them

Over time, the cacti’s woody parts can develop. Particularly column cacti produce enormous woody pieces. The benefits of this cactus wood are numerous: It grew quite straight and is free of knotholes. Its fiber structure, which is broken up by cavities, makes it both flexible and incredibly stable. This wood has only so far been used to make furniture in Latin America. You can get creatures like birds and reptiles toys in this nation.
