Some individuals believe that snake plants thrive when they are neglected. Although this is an exaggeration, they do thrive with relatively little attention. Keep their arid African beginnings in mind, and you’ll be halfway to providing them with the best possible care. Use coarse, quick-draining potting soil and pots with plenty of drainage holes at all times. Then comply with the following easy snake plant requirements:
- Light – Snake plants are adaptable, but they should be kept out of direct sunlight for the best results. They can deal with low light and long periods of shade, but they prefer bright, filtered light. Warm, sunny areas that are shaded from the sun’s direct rays are good.
- Water – Snake plants are drought resilient, therefore they rarely drown. Overwatering, on the other hand, is a surefire way to cause root rot. Water just when the soil feels dry around 3 inches deep throughout the active summer growing season. Then completely water. Water only as needed over the winter to maintain the leaves looking and feeling firm.
- Avoid overfertilizing snake plants because they are native to poor rocky soil. - Snake plants are slow-growing and rarely require repotting. It’s time to repot when your container is overflowing with leaves or roots emerge through drainage holes. - Repotting is an excellent opportunity to begin propagating new snake plants. The simplest method of propagation is division. To divide the root ball, gently pull the plant roots apart. Then plant the individual rooted rosettes, and you’ve got yourself some new plants to care for or give away to friends.
When should I fertilize my snake plant?
In our houses, Sansevierias can withstand a wide range of temperatures. If you’re comfy in your home, your Snake Plants will be as well. Simply keep them away from drafts and heating and cooling vents.
I have one in a pot growing outside that is doing well. In the summer, it can be exceedingly hot here in the desert, while a few evenings can be below freezing in the winter.
If yours is spending the summer outside, keep in mind that they do not tolerate cold or snow, so bring them inside before the temperatures drop too low.
Pests
Snake plants are pest-resistant, however they can obtain mealybugs and/or spider mites under unfavorable conditions.

Because pests grow quickly, it’s important to act as soon as you notice them. Pests can quickly spread from one houseplant to the next, so deal with them as soon as you notice them.
Propagation
You might never need to buy another Snake Plant once you’ve got one. They’re really simple to spread.
When grown in the garden, they spread by subterranean stems called rhizomes, which allow them to self-propagate. The simplest methods for propagating a houseplant are division followed by leaf cuttings.

Soil
Snake plants aren’t picky about the nutrients they need in their soil. I’d recommend a fast-draining, well-draining soil to help prevent root rot, which is one of the main difficulties that kills these plants.
In a 1:1 ratio, I use succulent and cactus mix with potting soil. If the mixture appears to be excessively heavy, I add a few handfuls of pumice or perlite to increase the aeration and drainage. If the pot only has one or two tiny drain holes, I’ll do the same thing.
Fertilizer
Until this year, I had never fertilized my Snake Plants (see note below). Every spring, I give them a worm compost and compost topping.
Every spring, I give most of my houseplants a light application of worm compost, followed by a light covering of compost. It’s simple a 1/4″ layer of each for a 6″ houseplant.
If you wish to fertilize, you can use an organic all-purpose houseplant food. Just make sure to fertilize twice a year, in the spring and/or summer. Snake plants don’t require much in the way of care.
Houseplants need to rest in the late fall and winter, so don’t fertilize them during that time. Also, avoid fertilizing a stressed houseplant, such as one that is bone dry or dripping wet.
Note: During the summer, I now water my Snake Plants with Eleanor’s vf-112-3 several times. Tucson has a longer growth season and more difficult growing circumstances. In between Eleanor’s feedings, I use Max Sea once or twice.
Do snake plants need plant food?
Food, Light, and Water Place your snake plants in indirect light (though they may tolerate a variety of light situations) and fertilize with an all-purpose plant food during the growing season.
How do I make my snake plant healthy?
- Select a container with a drainage hole in the bottom. Snake plants thrive in terra cotta pots, which allow the soil to dry out more quickly than plastic pots.
- Use a potting mix that drains effectively. It’s best to use a potting mix made for “cacti and succulents,” as it’ll be less likely to become waterlogged.
- Don’t bury snake plants too deeply while repotting them. The plant should be placed at the same depth as it was in its previous container.
Choosing a Location in the Home
- Snake plants love bright, indirect light, but they may handle some direct sunshine as well. They do, however, grow nicely in shady corners and other low-light regions of the house (albeit more slowly).
- Avoid transferring your plant from a low-light area to direct sunshine too rapidly, since this may cause it to shock. When moving plants from a darker to a lighter place, do so gradually over a week or so, gradually exposing them to brighter and brighter light. Also, alter your watering practices accordingly; plants in warmer, brighter places will require more water.
- Maintain a warm environment for the plant, with temperatures over 50°F (10°C). In the winter, make sure the windows aren’t drafty.
How do I make my snake plant thicker?
When kept in a slightly root-bound state, this plant will thrive. This method will urge it to grow quickly and produce more pups. Only re-pot the plant if there are a lot of offsets in the planter but no room for them to grow or if the roots are poking through the topsoil.
Feed Regularly with All-Purpose Fertilizer
Snake plants aren’t heavy feeders, but they do need to be fertilized with an all-purpose liquid fertilizer like 10-10-10 at 1/4 to 1/2 strength once every 4-6 weeks for optimal growth.
Place in a Warm & Well-Lit Area
While mother-in-tongue law’s is one of the greatest low-light houseplants available, you may speed up its growth by placing it in a bright, warm location. A place that receives intense indirect sunlight is optimal. A couple of hours in the direct morning sun will also help it flourish.
Watering
Snake plants are succulents with thick leaves that can store water. Root rot and reduced development can be caused by overwatering. Between watering intervals, wait until the topsoil is completely dry. Also, avoid watering the leaves from above to keep them dry.
How do I make my snake plant grow more leaves?
Place your snake plant in a spot that receives plenty of bright, indirect sunlight if you want it to produce additional leaves. The more strong light you provide, the more this plant will grow and appear better.
Are coffee grounds good for snake plants?
Azalea, Cyclamen, Snake Plant, African Violet, Pothos, and Christmas Cactus are some of the more common houseplants that thrive in acidic soil.
Azaleas
Azaleas are lovely houseplants that look especially good in ceramic pots. They prefer moist, acidic soil, therefore coffee grounds can be used as a fertilizer as well as a soil binder to keep the soil moist.
You can either put the grounds in the hole before planting the plant, or you can distribute coffee grounds around the stem on the soil’s surface.
Cyclamen
Cyclamen is a fantastic houseplant because it is succulent and requires minimal maintenance.
Sprinkle some coffee grounds on top of the soil in the pot every now and then to make the soil slightly more acidic, which will aid the plant’s growth.
Snake Plant
Because snake plants prefer acidic soil, coffee grinds can be used as a fertilizer.
However, instead of spreading them on the surface, mix them with compost to ensure that the final product is not too powerful.
African Violets
African violets are a common indoor plant. They don’t get too big, so you can combine a few pots.
Coffee grinds mixed with eggshells and compost can be used as a mulch or fertilizer because they love slightly acidic soil.
Pothos
Pothos prefers somewhat acidic soil (pH of around 6), therefore you can support the plant with coffee grounds.
However, because coffee contains a lot of acid, don’t give your plant too much of it. Instead, mix a small amount of compost into it and sprinkle it about the plant.
Christmas Cactus
If your Christmas cactus is wilting or possibly dying, dusting some coffee grounds on the soil in the container will provide the plant with just a little additional nitrogen, allowing it to recover.
What is the best soil mix for snake plants?
The good news is that you don’t need to buy any specific ingredients to make the ideal medium for your snake plant.
Garden soil should not be used on indoor plants. Plants that are grown outdoors benefit greatly from natural organic components.
Peat moss is excellent at absorbing water. It’s also the sole component of the soil that can degrade over time. When making your own snake plant mix, consider substituting coconut coir.
Is coffee good for snake plants?
The snake plant (Sansevieria trifasciata) is recognized for being low-maintenance and tolerant of neglect, though it does enjoy a cup of coffee now and then. Snake plant, which is native to tropical west Africa, thrives in acidic soil with a pH of 4.5 to 7.0. The “Big 3” primary nutrients in commercial fertilizers are nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium, or NPK. Each of these essential elements has a specific function in plant nutrition.
Plants absorb more nitrogen than any other element, thus nitrogen is considered the most vital nutrient. Nitrogen is necessary for plants to be healthy while they grow and nutritious to consume once they’ve been harvested.
