Why is it known as a “ghost pipe”?
The ghost pipe, also known as the ghost plant or corpse plant, is a perennial wildflower that derives its name from the way it looks and the color of its pure, pale white petals. This kind of plant does not make chlorophyll, the green pigment necessary for photosynthesis, unlike the majority of other plants. It is all white as a result (including its stem and scale-like “non-photosynthetic (such as leaves). It gets its energy via a relationship known as myco-heterotrophya, in which plants get their nourishment through parasitism rather than photosynthesis. This plant depends on fungi and a vast network of roots to “snatching energy from nearby plants.
The stem of the ghost pipe is waxy and light white. It stands 10 to 30 centimeters tall and has a single, five-part, white flower at the end. From June to September, it blooms.

These perennial plants typically grow 4 to 8 inches tall, have tiny scale-like leaves, and white flowers with five parts. Indian pipe, commonly referred to as ghost pipe, is an unusual and fascinating plant. It lacks the capacity to photosynthesize and the green color of most other plants because it lacks chlorophyll. It doesn’t rely on the sun to make food; instead, it consumes particular fungi, which in turn consume tree roots; this delicate balance prevents it from being transferred or cultivated.
Native Americans employed the ghost pipe as a medicine because it may ease both physical and mental pain. It is a sedative that eases insomnia, panic attacks, and anxiety. Muscle spasms, anxiety, agitation, migraines, fevers, and infections can all be effectively treated with it. Because it possesses anticonvulsant qualities and has been used to treat seizures and epilepsy, it is also known as the “fit plant.” Additionally, it can be used as a soothing agent to aid folks who have been overwhelmed by the effects of drugs like LSD or hallucinogenic mushrooms.
I collected the ghost pipe for this alcohol extraction tincture up in northern Vermont. It is a perennial that grows year after year, and I responsibly gather it from many sizable patches in my woods, taking care not to damage the roots in order to maintain the strength and health of my ghost pipe colonies.

Are Indian ghost pipes uncommon?

The development of the Indian pipe toward reproductive success is by no means easier, but the species has undoubtedly followed a different path. Colorlessness, which completely avoids coloring, proves to be wonderfully, almost miraculously attention-grabbing.
The Indian pipe, which can range in size from 3 to 9 inches, is frequently seen in dry woodlands where oaks or beeches prevail. Indian pipe is a plant that hikers frequently mistake for a type of fungus or mushroom, although it is actually a blueberry cousin devoid of chlorophyll. A single blossom that droops at an extreme angle tops each Indian pipe stem. As a result, plants have evolved to grow in environments where rain or other moisture could potentially damage priceless pollen or other floral components. It also serves as an effective deterrent to unwanted (nonpollinating) insects that might otherwise prefer to feed on the flower’s fragile reproductive organs or the pollen.
Although Indian pipes are occasionally discovered alone, emerging as a single “pipe along a trailside, they are also frequently seen pushing through the underbrush in dense clusters, sometimes with as many as 30 or 40 stems. Even wooded areas where the bunches themselves were abundant and it appeared pointless to count the individuals. Although it’s uncommon, if you locate one, usually speaking, look for others nearby.
The woodlands of New York City at this time of year are frequently unbearably hot by noon, but for the rare New Yorker without early morning obligations, it is a terrific time to look. The good news is that hunting in the evenings is almost as effective since the oblique angle of late-day light also penetrates the canopy and intensifies the contrast between the dark forest floor and the Arctic white blooms.

How does a ghost plant sustain itself, then? In a process known as photosynthesis, green chlorophyll-containing trees and plants use solar energy to transform atmospheric carbon dioxide into sugars and other carbohydrates. These sugars are transferred from the plant’s roots to the soil’s mycorrhizal fungus. The fungus gives the trees water and minerals in return. The underground fungal network allows for the sharing of nutrients produced by one tree with other trees and plants in this mutually beneficial symbiotic arrangement.

Ghost plants, however, lack chlorophyll and are unable to photosynthesise. As opposed to symbiotic, its root system interacts with subsurface fungi, obtaining nutrients from them in a parasitic capacity. Due to its parasitic nature, the ghost plant takes use of the mycorrhyzal fungi connected to the tree roots in the area. As a result, even the ghost plant, which lacks the pigment chlorophyll needed to synthesize food, can gain advantage from the nutrients provided by other photosynthesis-capable plants. In a mnagetrois interaction between a photosynthetic tree, a mycorrhizal fungus, and a parasite plant, the ghost plant essentially takes and provides nothing back, allowing it to grow in complete shade. Fortunately, the ghost plant returns all the nutrients it got from its hosts back to the forest floor when it dies, where they will be ingested, recycled, and absorbed by other animals.

The ghost plant can be consumed in moderation by the daring. When cooked, they are claimed to taste like asparagus but have a relatively bland flavor when eaten raw. But watch your intake! If consumed in large quantities, the plant, which has glycosides (compounds that help store sugars), can be dangerous.
It’s better to avoid attempting to transplant ghost plants back into your garden in a shaded area if you do happen to uncover them on your walks. Without their subsurface support system to provide them with water and nutrients, they are unlikely to live. These chlorophyll-deficient plants, which resemble tiny white vampires creeping up through the litter on the forest floor, have carved out a distinctive niche in the understory food chain and are best appreciated in their natural habitat.
