Where Does Cactus Fruit Grow

Prickly pears are indigenous to only the Americas, like the majority of real cactus species. Since then, they have spread to several other parts of the world thanks to human activity. [1] [7] There are many varieties of prickly pears in Mexico, particularly in the central and western parts and on the Caribbean islands (West Indies). Prickly pears are indigenous to many regions of the Western and South Central United States, which are arid, semiarid, and prone to drought. These regions include the lower elevations of the Rocky Mountains, the southern Great Plains, where species like O. phaeacantha and O. polyacantha become dominant, and the desert Southwest, where several types are endemic. O. humifusa, O. stricta, and O. pusilla, which are distributed from the East Coast south into the Caribbean and the Bahamas, are also native to sandy coastal beach scrub ecosystems of the East Coast from Florida to southern Connecticut. Additionally, the eastern prickly pear is indigenous to the “sand prairies” of the Midwest, which are close to significant river systems including the Mississippi, Illinois, and Ohio rivers. [9] Additionally, the plant naturally grows in hilly southern Illinois and rocky or sandy northern Illinois regions. [10]

One subspecies of Opuntia, O. fragilis var. fragilis, has been discovered growing along the Beatton River in central British Columbia, southwest of Cecil Lake at 56 17′ N latitude and 120 39′ W longitude. Opuntia species are the most cold-tolerant lowland cacti, extending into western and southern Canada.

[11] Others can be seen in northwest Alberta’s Kleskun Hills Natural Area, which is located at 55 15′ 30″ North and 118 30′ 36″ West. [12]

Prickly pears also yield the fruit known as tuna, which is popular in Mexico and the Mediterranean region and is also used to make aguas frescas.

The Galpagos prickly pear, O. galapageia, which was formerly considered to be a number of separate species, is now merely broken down into variations and subvarieties. [13] These have been referred to as “an excellent illustration of adaptive radiation” because the majority of them are restricted to one or a few islands. [14] In general, islands with giant tortoises have towering, trunked kinds, while islands without tortoises have low or prostrate forms of opuntia. Prickly pears play a crucial role in the food chain since they are a main source of nutrition for the common giant tortoises on the Galpagos Islands.

The fact that these cacti have thigmotactic anthers, which fold up when touched and release pollen, was discovered by Charles Darwin. Gently prodding the anthers of an open Opuntiaflower will reveal this movement. Other animals have undergone converging evolution for the same characteristic (e.g. Lophophora).

Prickly pears were first introduced to Australia in 1788 by Governor Phillip and the first settlers. Prickly pears were brought from Brazil to Sydney, New South Wales, where they were first found in a farmer’s garden in 1839. They seem to have moved out of New South Wales and wreaked havoc on the eastern states’ ecosystems. They can also be found in parts of Southern Europe, particularly Spain, where they grow in the country’s east, south-east, and south. They can also be found in Malta, where they grow all over the islands. They are also found in the Mediterranean region of Northern Africa, particularly in Algeria, Morocco, and Tunisia, where they grow all over the countryside. They were brought to South Africa from South America and are present there in huge numbers.

In places like Australia, Ethiopia, South Africa, and Hawaii, among others, prickly pears are regarded as an invasive species.

Prickly pears, principally O. stricta, were first brought to Australia in the 18th century and Europe in the 1500s[1] for use in gardens. Later, they were employed as a natural agricultural fence[15] and in an effort to start a cochineal dye industry. They soon spread over Australia as an invasive weed, eventually turning 260,000 km2 (101,000 sq mi) of farming area into a dense, 6 m (20 ft) high prickly pear jungle. What they referred to as the “green hell” drove a large number of farmers from their property; their abandoned dwellings were crushed under the cactus growth, which was expanding at a rate of 400,000 hectares (1,000,000 acres) each year. [15] The Commonwealth Prickly Pear Board was founded by the Australian federal government in 1919 to coordinate efforts with state governments to remove the weed. After initial attempts at mechanical removal and the use of toxic pesticides failed, biological control was tried as a last resort. [15] The ant The South American cactoblastis cactorum, whose larvae consume prickly pears, was imported in 1925 and drastically decreased the cactus population. The renowned entomologist Frederick Parkhurst Dodd’s son, Alan Dodd, played a key role in eradicating the prickly pear threat. In Chinchilla, Queensland, a memorial hall honors the moth. [15] An efficient method of halting the spread is to introduce cochineal insects, which consume the cacti while also killing the plant. [16]

Natural distribution happens when several creatures, such as antelopes, nonhuman primates, elephants, birds, and people, consume and spread seeds.

Do cacti produce fruit?

Although cactus fruits are not harmful, picking them up without getting hurt by the plant’s spines can be difficult. Some cacti species produce delectable, sweet fruits. The fruits of other species, however, are frequently too sour or bitter to enjoy.

The prickly pear cactus grows where?

The Cactaceae (Cactus) family includes the eastern prickly pear. There are around 1,800 species in this family, all native to the New World with the possible exception of one or two. With over 150 species in the genus Opuntia, the prickly pears are regarded as an ancient subgroup of the cactus family. It can be found from New Mexico and Montana east to Florida and Massachusetts, and it has the broadest distribution of any American cactus. Additionally, Ontario has it. Eastern prickly pears can grow in a region in big colonies or as a few lone plants. It is frequently referred to as Opuntiacompressa in older botanical manuals.

This species is a typical cactus with a stalk that performs photosynthetic leaf function. Water is also kept in this stem. It can endure the subfreezing conditions of the northern and middle states thanks to specific antifreeze compounds in its cells. The stems, or pads as they are more commonly known, can range in size from 4 to 12 centimeters (1.5 to 5 inches) in width and 5 to 17 centimeters (2 to 7 inches) in length. Pads can be joined in a branching or linear pattern.

Typically, the plants stretch out on the ground and grow little taller than 19 inches (0.5 meters). Some shrub-like plants in Florida can grow up to 2 meters (6.5 feet) tall.

Areoles, which resemble little dots, are scattered throughout the pads. Each areole has glochids (tiny barbs that hurt and irritate the skin when inserted), and the middle of the areole may or may not have a spine. At the tip of newly formed or actively expanding pads, there may occasionally be a little green structure paired with each areole. These are genuine leaves, but they will soon disappear.

Early summer sees the production of flowers at the ends of the pads. They are typically yellow, although the center of them is frequently crimson to orange east of the Appalachian Mountains and on dunes. In contrast to some other species, including the Indian Fig, Opuntia ficus-indica, the flesh of the reddish fruits is edible but typically not very sweet.

This cactus typically grows on calcareous rock or thin soil in wide-open, arid environments. It grows in or on fencerows, roadsides, prairie, rocky glades, rock outcrops, cliffs, abandoned quarries, and dunes. Well-drained grounds are essential since the roots need to remain dry during the winter to avoid decay.

Cactus fruit: where can I find it?

Fruit of the cactus variety can be discovered in Stardew Valley. Only the Calico Desert supports its growth. However, the Sandy oasis sells cactus seeds.

Is it okay to eat cactus fruit?

Mexican food features a lot of cacti and their fruits. The broad, flat cactus pads, also known as “nopales,” are a common ingredient in many main dishes in Mexico, including salads, eggs, and other cuisines. The cactus fruit, sometimes known as “prickly pears,” is extremely delicious and can be consumed straight from the plant. They can be mildly sweet or syrupy sweet, depending on the degree of ripeness.

Dragonfruit are grown where?

Dragon fruit are tasty fruits that grow on Hylocereus and Selenecereus cactus plants. The term “dragon fruit” will be used throughout this profile to refer to fruits from those genera (“Other64: Pitahaya Research – UCANR, n.d.). Other names for dragon fruit include pitaya, pitahaya, and strawberry pears (Lobo et al, 2013). From the genus Stenocereus, a different cacti fruit with the same popular name as pitaya can be found. Stenocereus fruits resemble dragon fruit in appearance, but they are rounder and taste sourer (Shelton, 2014).

Mexico, Central America, and South America are the original home of dragon fruit (Crane & Balerdi, n.d.). Although many Hylocereus species have been identified, accurate identification remains a challenge. Hylocereus undatus, which produces fruit with brilliant pink skin and white flesh, and Hylocereus sp., which produces fruit with bright pink skin and various shades of pink flesh, are the two principal species raised for commercial production. Both come in a variety of forms. Another dragon fruit produced for commercial purposes is Selenecereus megalanthus, which produces fruit with white meat and yellow peel (Lobo et al, 2013). All dragon fruits have edible, small, black seeds that resemble kiwi seeds in appearance. Dragon fruit has a texture like to that of a kiwi or a watermelon and a pleasantly sweet flavor with hints of earthiness. It is considered that cultivars with darker pink flesh offer the best flavor (McEachran, 2015). Dragon fruit are oval in shape and around the size of a baseball.

Commercial dragon fruit cultivation only occurs in California (particularly Southern California), Florida, and Hawaii (Lobo et al, 2013).

Marketing Channels

The primary season for fresh dragon fruit is the summer (June through September). For the majority of species, August and September are their busiest months; however, some Selenecereus megalanthus varieties may bear fruit from November through February (Lobo et al, 2015).

Dragon fruit is mostly farmed for the fresh market and is frequently sold at farmers’ markets and specialized shops. Farmers markets allowed growers to sell their dragon fruit in 2011 for between $7 and $8 per pound (Dawson, 2011).

The fruit has a great chance of being turned into a variety of goods, adding value. Energy and fruit bars, ice cream, jam, marmalade and preserves, juice, pastries, pulp, and yogurt are some of these processed goods. Unopened flower buds can be cooked and eaten as a vegetable, and the juice of the red kinds can also be used as a natural food colorant and dye (Crane & Balerdi, n.d). (Lobo et al, 2013).

In comparison, the wholesale cost of 10 pounds of organic red dragon fruit cultivated in California and sent to Los Angeles in August 2014 was $57.50. In August 2014, traditional red dragon fruit was imported to Los Angeles from Nicaragua and Vietnam, priced between $23.50 and $33. (Lobo et al, 2013).

Because there is a gap between demand and availability for dragon fruit in the United States, American farmers have the chance to cultivate the fruit commercially on a greater scale and address that market need (Hardesty, 2015).

Agritourism is another way to add value when growing a crop like dragon fruit. According to the University of California Cooperative Extension, “Agricultural tourism is a commercial enterprise at a working farm or ranch conducted for the enjoyment and education of visitors, and that generates supplemental income for the owner or operator (“Agritourism – UCCE, 2016).

Production

The University of California’s Agriculture and Natural Resources Division most recently reported in a 2013 PowerPoint that California grows 100 to 200 acres of dragon fruit, Hawaii grows about 200 acres, and Florida grows more than 400 acres (Lobo et al, 2013).

Dragon fruit is also grown commercially in a large number of other nations, such as Nicaragua (the top Central American producer of Hylocereus sp. ), Colombia (the top South American producer of Selenecereus megalanthus), Ecuador (the top producer of both Hylocereus sp. and Selenecereus megalanthus), Vietnam (the top Southeast Asian producer of Hylocereus undatus), Thailand, Malaysia, and Israel (Lobo et al, 2013).

Exports/Imports/United States Consumption

Fresh dragon fruit is mostly the white-fleshed cultivars that are imported to the United States from Southeast Asia (most notably Vietnam) (Lobo et al, 2013).

Since dragon fruit is a recently developing fruit crop, the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Economic Research Service and Foreign Agricultural Service do not yet have any export, import, or per capita consumption data for the United States (“Fruit and Tree Nut Data – ERS, 2021).

Management

California had been experiencing a severe drought for four years as of 2016. This had made it more difficult for the state to produce some crops (Ross, 2021). Because dragon fruit trees can tolerate dryness well, they are being produced in some locations to take the place of conventional crops like citrus and avocados (McClurg, 2015). Dragon fruit need between 25 and 50 inches of water per year, and excessive irrigation needs to be avoided to prevent fruit rot and flower drop.

Commercial orchards need to support the dragon fruit trees with some sort of trellising because they are regarded as climbing cactus plants. After one year of growth, dragon fruit trees can start to bear fruit, and they can continue to produce for about 30 years (Harrington, n.d. 2018).

The needs for pollination when starting a dragon fruit orchard are another significant consideration. Although many cultivars self-pollinate, some are self-incompatible and require cross-pollination to produce fruit (Crane & Balerdi, n.d.).

Can a cactus pear be grown?

Prickly pear can be grown from seeds, but it can take up to three years to get a big plant, thus propagation is frequently recommended. To do this, take a pad from the mother cactus that is at least six months old and detached individually. For at least a week, or until it scabs over, let the cut end “heal.”

Cacti are either fruits or vegetables.

Both a fruit and a vegetable, cactus. Vegetables because of the edible, succulent pads (nopales), and fruit because of the development of fruiting flower buds. Cactus veggies are always available since the pads remain green all year long and can be eaten at any time.

Cactus fruits, however, may only be picked once the plant blooms and the fruits form from the open buds. This typically occurs at the height of the growing season.
