The Cactus Bowl (formerly the Snow Bowl) was an annual postseason college football all-star game held in Kingsville, Texas. It featured the top collegiate football players who had finished their NCAA Division II eligibility and were projected to be drafted by the NFL. The Cactus Bowl was first held in 2001 at Javelina Stadium on the campus of Texas A&M UniversityKingsville. The Snow Bowl was first held in 1994 at the Fargodome in Fargo, North Dakota. The average number of players in the game was 88;[2] in all but the last year, there were two teams, East and West, made up of players from those parts of the country. Each bowl was bound by contract to hold a championship game because the coaches’ poll would have to select the victor of the Bowl Alliance championship game as its national champion. The first of these contests took place in January 1996 in the Fiesta Bowl.
The Rose Bowl, the three Bowl Alliance bowls, and the Bowl Championship Series (BCS) were formed after the 1997 season, with the Fiesta Bowl having a guarantee to host the national championship game every four years. The Fiesta Bowl, like the Bowl Alliance, received the first opportunity to host the BCS title game in 1999, and they also did so in 2003. Following the 2005 season, the BCS reorganized and started hosting a separate national championship game that alternated between BCS bowl venues.
All of the teams competing in this bowl will be chosen by the CFP Selection Committee in those years as of the 2014 season, when the Fiesta Bowl joined the College Football Playoff and began hosting a semifinal game. The victor of the Fiesta Bowl plays the winner of the Peach Bowl in the College Football Playoff National Championship Game the following week when it serves as a semifinal. The National Championship Game is not given to bowl organizations in the CFP as it was in previous years; instead, it is chosen through a procedure akin to choosing a Super Bowl host.

The game was contested between two Mountain West teams, marking the first time since the 1979 Orange Bowl that a non-championship bowl game was played between teams from the same conference. Neither Conference USA nor the Sun Belt had enough bowl-eligible teams to send teams to the Arizona Bowl. Due to their divisional differences, the two teams had not faced off during the regular season. [7]
The Sun Belt was announced to have signed a four-year agreement to take Conference USA’s place as the principal tie-in for the Arizona Bowl through 2019 in May 2016. The Sun Belt had a key tie-in for the fifth bowl game. On December 31, 2020, at 12:00 MST, Arizona Stadium hosted the sixth annual Arizona Bowl, which was broadcast on CBS. The unbeaten Mountain West Champion San Jose State Spartans took against the Mid-American Champion Ball State Cardinals in this NCAA-approved contest. There were COVID-19 limitations in place, thus no fans were permitted to go.

The chances for WVU to finish the season 9-3 were numerous, but close defeats to Maryland, Oklahoma, and Texas Tech stopped that from happening. Coach Neal Brown had high expectations for experienced quarterback Jarret Doege, who disappointed by throwing 11 interceptions and taking 30 sacks in 12 games while only throwing for less than 3,000 yards and 20 touchdowns. Leddie Brown, the offense’s shining star, ran for over 1,000 yards and 13 touchdowns.
The Big Ten West’s top slot eluded the Golden Gophers by one game, but they ended the regular season on a high note by defeating the Wisconsin Badgers on the road. Minnesota had a highly perplexing season, playing close to the Ohio State Buckeyes in Week 1 yet losing to the Illinois Fighting Illini and Bowling Green Falcons despite scoring a total of 16 points in those two games. The Gophers’ performance on the defensive side of the ball is their strongest point.
