Place the pothos cuttings jar in a location that receives plenty of light but not direct sunshine. However, the longer pothos cuttings are submerged in water, the more difficult it is for them to adapt to soil. Pothos cuttings that have begun to root should be transplanted as soon as possible.

The recommended way of propagating a pothos starts with the same steps as the first. Remove the first leaf above the cut ends from the pothos cuttings. Rooting hormone should be applied to the cut end. Make sure the initial set of root nodes is covered. Set the cuttings in a half-peat moss, half-perlite or sand potting mix. Keep your roots pothos away of direct sunlight and the soil moist. After one month, the roots should have developed, and the new plants should be ready in two or three months.

The most difficult step, arguably: patience! On a weekly basis, check root growth from the node. When necessary, replace the water with new, tepid water. Replace the water every few days or simply top off the vessel with fresh water when it appears to be running low—as long as there is no murkiness or fungal forming. If the water is muddy, we recommend replenishing it to ensure the root system’s health.

We recommend waiting until the root is at least 1 inch long or longer before transplanting your plant cuttings from the glass vessel into a planter using potting mix. This should take 4-6 weeks to complete. Saturate the potting mix with room temperature water and place the cutting in bright indirect light once the roots have been potted. It is entirely possible to keep your plant cuttings growing in water indefinitely. A word of caution: the longer your plant cutting lies in water, the worse it will likely get. Why? Because water is devoid of nutrients, it can raise the risk of fungal diseases. During the spring and summer growing seasons, you can assist combat this by changing the water and adding a small amount of fertilizer every month or so.

What type of soil do pothos need?

  • Select a container with a drainage hole in the bottom. Pothos plants dislike sitting in moist soil because they decay quickly.

Place your pothos cuttings in a vase filled with clean water, making sure that at least one or two nodes are submerged. Additionally, choose a vine cutting with at least two leaves to facilitate rapid growth.

In your home, place the vase in indirect sunlight. After 7-14 days, new roots will develop from the nodes that have been buried in water. Once the plant roots are an inch or two long, you can either put the cutting in soil or let it grow in water only.

Choose a high-quality liquid fertilizer to feed your plant if you opt to let it grow in water. Fertilize your pothos plant every 4 to 6 weeks if it’s growing in water.

The amount of fertilizer you use will depend on the directions on the fertilizer package as well as the size of your plant and jar. However, as a general rule, no more than a few drops should be used. When it comes to growing plants in jars of water, it’s always preferable to under fertilize than to over fertilize. You don’t want algae to grow, which is caused by nutrients and sunlight.

Place your pothos in front of a north-facing window and cover it with shades to keep the sun out. Also, be sure to change the water every two weeks to keep your plant healthy.

Why is my pothos not growing roots?
