There are numerous opportunities to see some of the beautiful cacti and their distinctive shapes as you stroll across the desert. What is initially hidden are the numerous instances of plants assisting baby cactus in surviving. However, if you pay great attention, you will notice that cacti are protected from the harsh desert environment by desert plants and trees all around you.

Despite having a robust, spiky exterior, cacti are actually rather delicate. Only a tiny portion of each cactus’ hundreds of dispersed seeds actually develop into new cactus plants. If “nurse plants” weren’t present, the majority would not survive. These plants offer much-needed defense from the sun, cold, and predators (including humans). Additionally, nurse plants give the young cactus the extra moisture they so desperately require.
