Kalanchoe pinnata, previously Bryophyllum pinnatum, is a succulent plant native to Madagascar that is popular as a houseplant and has grown naturalized in tropical and subtropical climates. It is also known as the air plant, cathedral bells, life plant, miracle leaf, and Goethe plant. It is distinguished by the abundance of small plantlets that grow on the borders of its phylloclades, a characteristic shared by certain other Bryophyllum species (now included in Kalanchoe).
It’s a succulent, perennial plant that grows to around 1 m (39 in) tall with thick cylindrical stems and reddish-tinged new growth that blooms for the most of the year. The feminine version of the Latin adjective pinnatus, which means “winged, pinnate,” is “pinnata.”
Is there another name for Kalanchoe plant?
Kalanchoe blossfeldiana is a herbaceous Kalanchoe blossfeldiana endemic to Madagascar that is often cultivated as a house plant. Flaming Katy, Christmas kalanchoe, florist kalanchoe, and Madagascar widow’s-thrill are some of its English common names.
Is kalanchoe a herb?
It’s a sturdy, erect perennial herb with tuberous and glabrous stems that are speckled with purple scales. Simple, opposite, 3-5 lobed, thick, fleshy, and blackish with crenate margins, the leaves are simple, opposite, thick, fleshy, and blackish.
Is kalanchoe a lucky plant?
- The plant’s stalk should be erect, and the blossoms should not be drooping. Choose one with abundant foliage and blooms, as well as no brown edges to its leaves and petals.
These pots are embellished with golden monkey figurines and plush toys. Fittonias and zamioculcas, sometimes known as the Gold Coin plant, are among the plants used in each pot, which are a mix of indoor and festive plants.
Spring is here, so let’s celebrate with some lovely sakura. This small bonsai would look great on a table. Unlike the typical blossoms on large trees, which are spread out, its pink flowers develop in clusters.

Kalanchoe blossfeldiana is known by the common names Kalanchoe, Widow’s-thrill, and Flaming Katy, all of which are derived from its vivid and vibrant blooms.
Is Kalanchoe plant good for health?
Vitamin C, which possesses antioxidant effects, is found in the Kalanchoe plant’s leaves. This suggests that drinking kalanchoe tea could help protect you from some cancers. Kalanchoe also includes natural chemicals known as Kalanolides, which have anti-inflammatory properties.
What is Kalanchoe plant good for?
The mitotic spindle is a sophisticated molecular framework that mediates appropriate sister-chromatid segregation during mitosis and is critical for maintaining daughter cell genomic integrity. In animal cells, two primary mechanisms for mitotic spindle assembly have been found so far. First, mitotic centrosomes act as microtubule-organizing centers (MTOCs), directing spindle assembly from spindle poles by nucleating microtubule regulation. The second pathway is reliant on Aurora A, which regulates spindle assembly and mediates a RanGTP gradient. In the absence of a RanGTP gradient, the chromosomal passenger complex (CPC) generates spindle assembly. The spindle assembly checkpoint is activated when these pathways and the mitotic spindle are disrupted, resulting in mitotic arrest and cell death.
Anti-cancer compounds that target microtubule assembly are frequently extremely promising. For example, vinca alkaloids and taxanes are used to treat both solid tumors and haematological malignancies. Many of these chemicals were discovered in a range of marine creatures and plants. There are two types of microtubule-targeting drugs: microtubule-destabilizing agents and microtubule-stabilizing agents. By binding to tubulin, affecting microtubule dynamics, and disrupting the mitotic spindle, both microtubule-destabilizing and -stabilizing drugs suppress cell proliferation. In comparison to normal cells, cancer cells are more vulnerable to tubulin binding agents. These microtubule targeting drugs can impair both mitotic spindle formation and the microtubule network since microtubules are present in cells that are in interphase or going through mitosis. During interphase, the microtubule network mediates essential cellular functions such as cellular migration and intracellular trafficking. Microtubule network disruption can result in a variety of cytotoxic effects.
As prospective anti-cancer drugs, a new line of anti-mitotic therapies targeting kinesins and mitotic kinases, including as Eg5, Aurora kinase, and polo-like kinase, has recently been created. Eg5 is a kinesin motor that is necessary for centrosome separation and bipolar spindle formation during prophase and localizes to the centrosomes and MT asters. The aurora kinase family is required for cells to transition from mitosis to cytokinesis. Aurora A is a centrosome maturation, separation, and spindle bipolarity protein that is localized to spindle poles. During prophase, Aurora B is the enzymatically active member of the CPC, which is found along the chromosomal arms and at the centromeres. From prometaphase to metaphase, it is concentrated at the inner centromere, then moves to the spindle midzone, cell cortex, and midbody during late mitosis and cytokinesis. The CPC is required for the bipolar mitotic spindle’s construction and stability. Mitotic catastrophe is caused by inhibiting Aurora B and other CPC components, demonstrating that CPC is implicated in both mitotic spindle assembly processes.
Kalanchoe is a genus in the Crassulaceae family. Kalanchoe species are frequently mentioned in folklore and are widely used in traditional medicine to treat fever, abscesses, bruises, contused wounds, coughs, skin ailments, infections, hypertension, rheumatism, and inflammation. Kerala tribes have also used kalanchoe species to cure cancer symptoms. Bufadienolide compounds have been identified from a range of Kalanchoe species and have been shown to have potent anti-tumor activity. The plant Kalanchoe tubiflora (KT) was chosen for this investigation because of its vast range of potential biological functions. In Southern Brazil, KT is one among the most commonly utilized medicinal plants for wound treatment. The results of systematic biological testing corroborate the traditional usage of KT in wound healing. The generation of multi-polar spindles and chromosomal misalignment of mitotic cells is shown to have anti-proliferative activity in an n-BuOH-soluble fraction of KT. Mitotic catastrophe occurs as a result of these aberrant mitotic processes, which is a desirable outcome of a cancer therapy medication.
What is Bryophyllum used for?
Bryophyllum pinnata (B. pinnata) is a common medicinal plant used in Indian and other countries’ traditional medicine to treat a variety of infections, gastrointestinal problems, wound healing, and other maladies. Its anticancer activities, however, are unknown. We developed a study to assess anti-cancer and anti-Human Papillomavirus (HPV) properties in B. pinnata leaf extracts and try to identify its active principle in light of the plant’s broad therapeutic potential.
Methods
Using column chromatography with a step- gradient of petroleum ether and ethyl acetate, a chloroform extract obtained from a bulk of botanically well-characterized crushed B. pinnata leaves was isolated. TLC, HPTLC, and NMR were used to characterize fractions for phytochemical compounds, and MTT-based cell viability assays, Electrophoretic Mobility Shift Assays, Northern blotting, and immunoblotting for apoptosis-related proteins in human cervical cancer cells were used to assess biological activity.
Results
The crude leaf extracts demonstrated growth inhibitory activity with an IC50 of 552 g/ml, which resolved to fraction F4 (Petroleum Ether: Ethyl Acetate: 50:50) with an IC50 of 91 g/ml. On cervical cancer cells, anti-viral activity of the extract and its fraction was demonstrated by downregulation of constitutively active AP1 specific DNA binding activity and suppression of oncogenic c-Fos and c-Jun expression, which was accompanied by inhibition of HPV18 transcription. Fraction F4 dramatically caused apoptosis, as demonstrated by increased production of the pro-apoptotic protein Bax, suppression of the anti-apoptotic components Bcl-2, activation of caspase-3, and cleavage of PARP-1, in addition to limiting growth. HPTLC and NMR phytochemical examination of fraction F4 revealed the existence of activity that was similar to Bryophyllin A.
Conclusions
Our findings show that B. pinnata leaves have anticancer and anti-HPV action, which could be used as a potential anticancer and anti-HPV therapy for the treatment of HPV infection and cervical cancer.
What does Bryophyllum mean?
Phyllon = leaf) refers to a group of Crassulaceae plant species peculiar to Madagascar. It is a subdivision or subgenus of the Kalanchoe genus that was formerly put at the genus level. This part is famous for the vegetative growth of little plantlets on the leaf fringes, which eventually drop off and root. Mitosis of meristematic-type tissue in notches in the leaves produces these plantlets.
