Water the plant the day before you intend to transport it; damp soil holds together better. Select a container with a diameter that is 1-2 inches (2.5–5 cm) larger than the one you now use. Mix more potting mix than you anticipate being required with an equal amount of water in a bucket.
Check to see whether you can slide your plant out of its pot by turning it on its side. If it continues to stick, try circling the pot’s edge with a knife, inserting a pencil through the drainage holes, or gently pulling on the stem. Cut away any roots that are extending from the drainage holes if they are present. If your plant is actually stuck, you might have to crush the pot, either by smashing the clay pot with a hammer or cutting it with shears if it’s plastic.
Fill the bottom of the new container with enough of your moistened soil so that the top of the root ball will be about 1 inch (2.5 cm) below the rim. To help with drainage, some advise placing stones or other similar material at the bottom. However, this doesn’t really aid in drainage, and when transplanting overgrown container plants, it takes up valuable space that ought to be used for soil.
Your root ball should be loosened, and the soil that comes loose should be thrown away because it likely contains more salts than nutrients by this point. Remove any roots that are entirely encircling the root ball or that are dead. Place your plant in the new container and cover it with potting soil that has been watered. Some slow-growing plants, like cactus, can live for years in the same pot with only a soil resupply. The best time to repot your houseplants is typically in the spring, at the beginning of the growing season.
If you notice one or more of these indicators, you’ll know it’s time to report:
1. The grow pot or planter’s drainage hole(s) are being penetrated by roots 2. The plant’s roots are almost pushing it out of the planter. 3. The plant’s growth is significantly slower than usual (different than winter dormancy) 4. The plant is quite top-heavy and is prone to falling over. 5. The potting soil dries out the plant faster than before, necessitating more frequent waterings. 6. The plant’s foliage is larger than its present planter by more than three times. 7. The plant or planter has a pronounced salt and mineral buildup 8. You haven’t repotted your plant in more than a year.

5. Include a plant. Make sure your plant is centered before placing it on top of the newly added layer of soil in the planter. Then, pour extra potting soil all around the plant to secure it. You want the roots to have room to breathe, so avoid packing the planter with too much soil.
Water and pleasure. The potting soil should be evened out, then water well. It’s important to remember that a plant that has just been re-potted doesn’t require fertilizer.
After purchasing, should I repot my indoor plants?
The first time you receive a plant, you probably don’t want to repot it. The experts concur that before moving a newly acquired plant from its original container to another, you should give it a few days or even weeks to get used to your environment.
You might want to consider putting your plant in a chic new planter that goes with your design. But according to Erin Marino, the head of brand marketing at The Sill, one of the main reasons you would want to repot a plant is to give it fresh soil.
Another rationale for repotting a plant, perhaps? It is root-bound if it has grown too large for its present potion. According to Richard Pham, manager of Little Shop of Soil in Bushwick, Brooklyn, if the plant’s roots have filled all available space and started to protrude through the bottom of the pot, it’s time for a new home.
Try to avoid repotting your plants too frequently because it might be unpleasant for them. Give the plant a voice. When it’s ready for a new home, it will let you know.
The following signs of root-bound and pot-bound plants should be on the lookout for, according to Pham: the roots are peeking out from the drainage holes, the plant can be lifted or dropped out of the pot with ease, you can see more roots than soil, the plant dries out more quickly than usual, or it has been more than a year since the plant was last repotted.

After repotting, should you water indoor plants?
- A day or two before you intend to re-pot your plant, give it a good soak. This will lessen the chance of shock and make it easier to remove your plant from its pot. It will also keep it well-hydrated.

- If merely repotting, remove all of the soil from the pot and rinse it with hot water to remove any sediment. When choosing a new pot for your plant, make sure it is clean and no more than two diameters larger than its previous container. Too much room might cause root rot and poor growth.
- We advise adding a.5 layer of activated charcoal to the bottom of your pot if you are potting into a container without drainage. To increase drainage, some people advise placing a layer of stones at the bottom of any pot; however, it’s uncertain whether this is effective, thus pebbles are not included as long as the pot has drainage. After that, add some fresh potting soil to the bottom of the pot so that the plant’s base will be about.5 inches below the rim.
- Place your plant in the fresh container, then fill it with dirt and air until all the roots are covered. While carefully compacting the dirt to remove any air pockets, be careful not to damage the fragile roots. Lightly water the new soil to keep it moist but not drenched.
Plants frequently go through a shock period after repotting or potting up. It’s normal, so don’t worry! Although plants may seem thirsty and wilted, wait to water them for approximately a week after repotting to make sure any roots harmed during the process have recovered. Plants should be located in a cooler, more shaded area while they are recovering.
