These succulents will develop colorful flowers in late spring or early summer with adequate care.
- 1. Offer the right amount of shade and light. Sunlight must reach the rootstock cactus in sufficient amounts for photosynthesis. Place your moon cactus close to a window, but make sure it only receives filtered light since direct sunlight might be harmful. If you choose to put your cactus on a windowsill, make sure curtains are covering it to prevent it from getting too much direct sunlight.
- 2. Sow your moon cactus in soil that drains properly. Root rot or mealybugs might result from overwatering a moon cactus. For moon cacti, potting soil mixture is suitable; alternatively, you can amend the soil with perlite or coarse sand to increase drainage. To aid in the drainage of extra water, choose a porous clay pot with drainage holes.
- 3. Don’t overwater your moon cactus. The moon cactus doesn’t need a lot of water, like many other cactus species. After giving the soil a good soak with water, let it air dry entirely. Wait about a week before watering the plant again after the soil has dried out. Only during the growing season, and not throughout the winter, should the moon cactus be watered.
- 4. Position your moon cactus in a warm area. A area where the temperature does not fall below 60 degrees Fahrenheit is the best option. A moon cactus can be kept outside throughout the summer, but you must bring it inside during the winter because frost will kill it.
Where are moon cacti found?
Undoubtedly, many of you have already encountered this fascinating cactus. I’m sure some of you have one. These cacti, often known as “Hibotan” or “moon cacti,” are actually two separate cacti that have been grafted together rather than being a single species.
Gymnocalycium mihanovichii is the scientific name for the bright top portion. Both Paraguay and a few areas of Argentina are home to it. It is not nearly as colorful in the wild. The examples that are offered for sale in garden supply stores throughout the world are actually mutant species that lack chlorophyll, exposing other colours that are typically covered by green. These mutants can have a variety of colors, including deep purple, deep red, and yellow. These mutants would ordinarily perish as seedlings without chlorophyll.
Someone eventually had the brightly colored mutants grafted onto several species of cacti, with the hope that they may survive. Exactly this is what has happened. The bottom host cactus is interestingly not even in the same genus as the moon cactus. Most frequently, a species of Hylocereus is used for grafting (the same genus responsible for dragon fruit). I have no idea how or why this host was selected. Regardless, I hope that after reading this you have a newfound respect for these incredibly indestructible house plants.
Does the Philippines have cactus plants?
Many people have asked me if there are any cacti or succulents that are naturally occuring in the Philippines during the roughly five years that I’ve been blogging Succulentophile. Some people really believe that these succulents are native to our nation since some of them have adapted so well to our tropical environment and are observed growing as hedges in front of homes or have become common landscape material for various purposes all around buildings, residences, and parks.
Euphorbia lactea and its relatives, which many people employ as lovely hedges around their perimeter walls, are some of the obvious candidates. These are beneficial since they are found growing rather aggressively over many Metro Manila residences and because the thorns on them serve as a natural “barbed wire and protection for the homes.” Additionally, euphorbias have a milky sap that is dangerous and can temporarily blind you if it comes in touch with your eyes. You’ll get a terrible stomach upset if you eat it, and consuming too much of it internally could be fatal. Therefore, this is a particularly great natural deterrent to robbers and “akyat-bahays.” I regret to report that I have observed some of these wonderful Euphorbia hedges slowly deteriorating, largely as a result of our steadily rising pollution levels. In reality, Euphorbia lactea is indigenous to various tropical Asian nations, primarily India.
The common Opuntia and different Agave species are two additional usual possibilities. You may observe these expanding throughout Metro Manila and even in the regions. Opuntias, which are prospering in the cool Tagaytay climate, are planted along the street that leads to Connie Yuchengco Gonzalez’s lovely Tagaytay farm. Even delicious salad meals have been made by Connie utilizing chopped Opuntia pads as a main element! So it’s rather simple for us to assume that these well-known succulents are native to us. But it’s not just us who can be blamed for this misunderstanding.
On a recent vacation to Barcelona, we took the train to Port Aventura, a sizable Disney-like amusement park over two hours outside of the city center, on our way to Tarragona (and, I must add, at the kids’ incessant pleading) (great roller-coaster rides for the boys, I must admit). We passed enormous Opuntia trees and wild Agave Americana growing all along the Mediterranean shore as we traveled. We also had the opportunity to see the renowned Park Guell, which Antoni Gaudi decorated with a variety of Opuntia and Agave plantings. In Barcelona, locals truly believe that these plants are local flora. But only the Americas, primarily in Mexico, are home to these indigenous plants. These have already become an indelible part of Barcelona’s landscape, having undoubtedly been introduced there centuries ago by galleon traders traveling the Atlantic.
The Americas are home to all cactus (the New World, as the explorers called it). Others, though, can be found all over the world. Believe it or not, there are a few succulents that naturally grow in the Philippines. Our succulent species belong to a class of plants known as caudiciforms that have enlarged stem bases. The following facts about caudiciforms were taken from various websites on the Internet:
The term “caudiciform” does not actually exist in biology. It is a phrase used to describe plants that have enlarged or swollen bases as a direct result of surviving in harsh climates and having to adapt to survive extended dry spells or a general lack of nutrients. The earth is home to thousands of unique, stunning, and occasionally bizarre caudiciforms. Some bury themselves beneath the ground and only produce plants once it has rained. Most produce “trunks or caudexes that store everything needed to survive for extended periods of time in a harsh environment. Others that grow on the branches and stems of trees in rainforests and develop these caudexes or thicker stems are epiphytic. These latter instances are from the Philippines. Hydnophytum formicarum and Myrmecodia tuberosa, often known as ant-plants, are the two Philippine species that are being emphasized today because, throughout their evolution, they have created a symbiotic relationship with ants. These are likewise becoming more and more well-liked among local and foreign collectors.
On the website of the University of Connecticut’s College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, you can find an essay by Plummer titled “Cultivation of the epiphytic ant-plants Hydnophytum and Myrmecodia” that was published in the Cactus and Succulent Journal of America 72: 142-147 (2000). I’ve chosen a few quotes from this article:
“When we consider the relationships between insects and plants under agriculture, we frequently think about pollination or herbivore predation. These interactions, however, can be much more complicated in nature. Ants and specialized plants called myrmecophytes, which have structures that host ant colonies, have some of the most fascinating symbiotic interactions. In rare situations, the plants also give the ants nourishment in the form of nectar or Beltian bodies, which are high in protein. The myrmecophytes get nourishment or defense against herbivores in return. For those who enjoy caudiciforms, Hydnophytum and Myrmecodia are two myrmecophyte genera of particular interest.
Members of the Hydnophytinae subtribe of the Rubiaceae coffee family include Hydnophytum and Myrmecodia. While certain species in both genera develop as terrestrials in nutrient-poor mountains, epiphytes make up the majority of both genera’ species. The base of the stem grows into a sizable tuber in the genera Hydnophytum and Myrmecodia, as well as the connected genera Anthorrhiza, Myrmephytum, and Squamellaria. Within the tuber, tissue dies back to create a network of galleries and entrance holes. In some situations, the chambers are further ventilated by microscopic pores. Ants can build huge nests inside the chambers. The plant’s main advantage from the ant residents is nutrients. Myrmecodia’s internal galleries are split between warty chambers where the ants discharge their waste and dry, smooth-walled chambers where the ants live. Hydnophytum has less specialized galleries, although the warts are more frequently found in groups near the extremities of the chambers.
“Despite having a close relationship, Hydnophytum and Myrmecodia can be easily distinguished from one another. The broad, unbranched stems of myrmecodia typically have only one or a few big leaves (exceptions are M. lamii and M. beccarii). The distinctive clypeoli, which enclose each leaf base like a shield, are regularly found on Myrmecodia stems. Spines that may surround the clypeoli give the stem an oddly armored appearance. But it should be mentioned that some Myrmecodia species lack or have indistinct clypeoli. Alveoli, the hollows where Myrmecodia flowers grow, form between the clypeoli along the stem. Thinner stems with longer internodes and smaller leaves characterize Hydnophytum. They frequently have several stems that are capable of branching. Clypeoli and alveoli are absent from the stems.
“The range of Hydnophytum reaches as far east as Fiji and south as the Cape York Peninsula in Queensland, starting in Malaysia and the Philippines. Southern Thailand, Cambodia, and Vietnam are all included. With the highest species diversity in New Guinea, Myrmecodia has a similar but slightly more constrained range. Ant-plants are quite uncommon in lowland rainforests, unlike many epiphytes. In a myrmecophyte ecosystem, nutrient availability likely limits development, whereas in deep forest, lack of light would minimize the benefit from additional nutrients delivered by ants. An environment that is more typical is open woodland where the plants are exposed to intense light. The plants can be highly common in disturbed habitats like plantations and are more frequently seen on branches than trunks.
I’m new to cultivating these Philippine succulents because I just bought my Myrmecodia and Hydnophytum specimens (as well as the Dioscorea macrostachya pictured here) from Purificacion Orchids. The specimens I bought are pretty established, and they are growing on orchid bark to resemble how they would naturally develop. I water them twice a day, in the morning and the afternoon, and maintain them in a bright area that gets a few hours of early sun each day. These plants can also be grown in pots with a mixture of peat and perlite or sphagnum moss and finely chopped bark. The growing medium’s capacity to hold onto moisture for an extended period of time is crucial. I believe keeping these plants overly dry for an extended period of time is one of the main reasons of morbidity in these plants.
Although I haven’t personally encountered them, I’m aware that these ant-plants are frequently attacked by scales, which are also widespread pests of cactus and succulents in our country. Unfortunately, the ants themselves might spread this pest. In any case, the ants haven’t yet found my plants. It might be helpful to spray your plants with a diluted balanced fertilizer combination similar to the one used for succulents, though, as these plants also depend on ants for some of their nutrients (through the ants’ excrement or dead bodies). I think once or twice a month will do, but I’m still learning how to nurture these plants myself. Sincerely, I’ve seen some of these plants being taken out of their natural forest environments and sold for pitiful prices of P50 to P100 each at several plant fairs and shops. These are difficult to reestablish, and the majority of them disappear. Myrmecodia and Hydnophytum, on the other hand, appear to be reasonably simple to propagate because they can form plantlets along their stems that can be separated and planted. The trick, in my opinion, is to keep them wet in their growing medium and in a bright area that is protected from direct sunlight for the majority of the day. In order to prevent indiscriminate vendors from robbing and pillaging these plants from our forests, I hope that more propagated sources will soon be accessible.
How long are moon cacti alive for?
A Moon Cactus can live for one to three years on average. There are a few anecdotes, though, of succulent keepers who have preserved specimens for considerably longer than five years. However, it is not uncommon for a Moon Cactus to only last a few months, particularly if you are unfamiliar with taking care of one.
How quickly do moon cacti expand?
A grafted cactus with a brightly colored ball-shaped top is called a moon cactus. These vibrant cacti have gained popularity as compact, low-maintenance houseplants. Typically, the cactus top is an intense shade of red, yellow, pink, or orange. This patterned top has the look of a vibrant cactus blossom. Some of these vibrant cactus plants have tops that are multicolored or variegated, but every one of them has a cluster of tiny, prickly spines that runs along the curved veins.
Gymnocalycium mihanovichii, also known as the moon cactus, goes by the names Hibotan cactus, ruby ball cactus, and star flowered cactus. A grafted combination of two cacti is known as a moon cactus. The green lower cactus might be any type of cactus, while the bright Gymnocalycium mihanovichii cactus at the top is a common cactus. The cactus ball typically ranges in size from 1 to 2 (2.55 cm) and has noticeable ribs on it.
Put the moon cactus in a warm, sunny location to take care of it. The pot needs to have drainage holes and a quick-draining cactus mixture within. Only water the plant thoroughly when the potting soil is completely dry. To cultivate a robust, eye-catching cactus, fertilize regularly in the spring and summer.
Aerated, sandy soil with good water drainage is the best soil for moon cactus plants. A potting mixture can also be transformed into suitable cactus soil by adding pebbles or tiny stones. Like the majority of succulent species, cacti demand an acidic to neutral potting soil.
The ruby ball cactus and other cacti grow slowly, at a rate of between 0.4 to 1.1 (13 cm) each year. Moon cactus plants are typically supplied almost completely developed.
Ten to 200 years are the lifespan of cactus plants. Outside-growing cacti often live longer than interior-growing cacti, but with the right care, your indoor moon cactus plant can flourish for many years.
The moon cactus has a shorter lifespan than the majority of cacti. These grafted cactus often only survive for a few years. Because the rootstock has outgrown the top of the plant, they live shorter lives. You must re-graft the vibrant ball cactus onto the rootstock to increase their lives.
