The Cactaceae (Cactus) family includes the eastern prickly pear. There are around 1,800 species in this family, all native to the New World with the possible exception of one or two. With over 150 species in the genus Opuntia, the prickly pears are regarded as an ancient subgroup of the cactus family. It can be found from New Mexico and Montana east to Florida and Massachusetts, and it has the broadest distribution of any American cactus. Additionally, Ontario has it. Eastern prickly pears can grow in a region in big colonies or as a few lone plants. It is frequently referred to as Opuntiacompressa in older botanical manuals.
This species is a typical cactus with a stalk that performs photosynthetic leaf function. Water is also kept in this stem. It can endure the subfreezing conditions of the northern and middle states thanks to specific antifreeze compounds in its cells. The stems, or pads as they are more commonly known, can range in size from 4 to 12 centimeters (1.5 to 5 inches) in width and 5 to 17 centimeters (2 to 7 inches) in length. Is Australia the prickly pear cactus’s native home?

Introduction of prickly pear
The colonists of the First Fleet brought prickly pear plants (possibly Opuntia monacantha) to Australia in 1788.
A group of Opuntia plants from Brazil that were infested with cochineal insects (Dactylopius coccus) were found on one of Captain Arthur Phillip’s ships.
A dye industry
The world’s brightest crimson dye was made from crushed cochineal insects until the development of synthetic dyes in the late 19th century. Before Spanish conquistadors discovered it in the markets of North and Central America in 1519, this dye had been used in those regions for many years.
Spain swiftly established a lucrative monopoly over the dyestuff’s distribution in Europe. It surpassed silver as Mexico’s second-most valuable export during the colonial era.
The color red was associated with power; monarchs and cardinals wore crimson robes. The “redcoat” uniforms of the British army came to represent the use of authority.
In an effort to capture a piece of this profitable market for Britain, Joseph Banks proposed in the late 18th century that a cochineal dye industry be established in the subtropical colony of New South Wales.
The cactus plants survived but the Brazilian cochineal insects quickly vanished. They are still present in New South Wales’ coastal regions, where they are recognized as noxious weeds.
Common pest pear
Beyond the east coast, the Opuntia monacantha variant did not proliferate. Around contrast, a variety of prickly pear types were introduced to Australian gardens in the middle of the 1800s.

Government intervention

Subsequent Acts from 1901 and 1924 replaced the 1886 Act, but none of them were able to stop the spread of the prickly pear.
The Queensland Government offered a $5,000 incentive in 1901 for a method that would effectively eradicate the cacti. In 1907, the reward was quadrupled, but no one was able to claim it because none of the proposed solutions worked.
The plants were destroyed using various methods, including as burning the surface plants, digging them up, using horse-drawn rollers to crush them, and poisoning them.
According to the 1926 Queensland Prickly Pear Land Commission, 31,100 tins of arsenic pentoxide and 27,950 tins of Robert’s Improved Pear Poison, which was made up of 20% arsenic pentoxide and 80% sulphuric acid, had been sold. However, these incredibly labor-intensive measures had little to no effect on the cactus’ proliferation.
In many regions, the density of prickly pear had made farming difficult, and leasehold land was being neglected as a result.
A new approach
The Queensland Government established the Travelling Commission in 1913. This group of biologists traveled to North and South American nations where the prickly pear was a native species.
The panel found that various insects and fungus diseases that appeared to be exclusive to members of the cactus family were attacking the plant there.
In order to fight the prickly pear issue, it advised the introduction of a variety of natural insect and plant disease foes.
However, after the First World War started in August 1914, preparations for the testing and dissemination of these biological agents were put on hold.
The Commonwealth Prickly-Pear Board wasn’t founded until 1920 by the Commonwealth, Queensland, and New South Wales Governments (CPPB). The Board looked at the commission’s suggestions for using biological agents to control Opuntia stricta.
A team of entomologists led by Allan P. Dodd were dispatched by the CPPB to America almost immediately to obtain the previously identified biological agents. In Queensland, they simultaneously created a breeding facility for Cactoblastis cactorum moths.
Cactoblastis cactorum
On the prickly pear plants, female moths lay their eggs. The newly hatched larvae then cooperate to eat through the cactus pads’ resistant outer layer in order to reach the tasty inside. They gorge themselves on the soft tissue there until they are around 25 millimeters long.
The larvae drop off the prickly pear when they are fully grown and begin the cocoon stage. The cycle is restarted when the moth emerges from the cocoon.
The release
Early in the 1920s, when the first two attempts to breed moths were unsuccessful, 3000 Cactoblastis cactorum eggs were brought in from Argentina. These eggs were split in halves and stored at Brisbane and the Chinchilla Prickly Pear Experimental Station, respectively.
A total of 100,605 eggs from a population of 527 females hatched. The moth produced extraordinarily well. Over 2.5 million eggs were produced by the second generation.
To make sure the moths wouldn’t harm other plants, breeding and feeding practices were strictly monitored in Chinchilla. The first moth was released in 1926.
Chinchilla was dispersing as many as 14 million cactoblastis eggs per day across Queensland and New South Wales at its busiest. The majority of the invasive plants had been removed from the overgrown field by 1933.
An ongoing problem
Prickly pear is still an issue in New South Wales and Queensland, where new kinds that do not serve as hosts for cactoblastis moths have established themselves, though not on the same magnitude as the crisis of the 1920s.
In the Caribbean, where native Opuntia species grow, cactoblastis moths were first introduced there in 1957. The plants in the Caribbean had never previously been exposed to the moths because they were native to South America.
They began by attacking the indigenous species, then moved on to damage the commercial opuntia crop in Mexico.
There are serious worries that the moths could wipe out economically and ecologically significant Opuntia species in the southern part of the United States.
What types of climates do prickly pears prefer?
