How To Take Care Of Zamioculcas?

Where should I place my ZZ plant?

ZZ plants are native to Africa’s tropical regions, which have rainy and dry seasons, resulting in wildly changing growing conditions. As a result, they are very forgiving houseplants! ZZ plants thrive in fluorescent lights in offices and commercial buildings since they need a lot of indirect light (direct sunshine can scorch the leaves). ZZ plants can be cultivated outside in zones 10 to 12 in regions with filtered sunshine and well-draining soil. (The sun is OK in the morning, but plants need shade from the intense afternoon sun.)

Should I mist my ZZ plant?

On a ZZ Plant leaf, there is a sunburn. I put mine out in the rain one afternoon and kept it out until 11 a.m. the next morning. This one leaf was the only one that caught fire. It was also the end of October, and they burn quickly!

Humidity

Tropical climates are home to ZZ Plants. Despite this, they are adaptive and do well in our homes, which have dry air. Mine barely has a few microscopic, tiny brown tips here in hot, dusty Tucson.

Fill the saucer with stones and water if you think yours are stressed owing to a lack of humidity. Place the plant on the pebbles, but make sure the drain holes and/or the bottom of the pot aren’t flooded. Misting a couple of times a week should also assist.

Fertilizing

When it comes to fertilizing, ZZ Plants aren’t picky. I use worm compost and compost to feed my. I’ve been doing it once a year, but starting next year, I’ll start applying in late February/early March (here in Tucson, where the weather warms up quickly) and then again in July. If you have it, liquid kelp or fish emulsion would be good, as would a balanced liquid houseplant fertilizer (5-5-5 or lower). In the spring, dilute any of these to half strength and apply. If you believe your ZZ requires another application, repeat the process in the summer.

You shouldn’t fertilize houseplants in the late fall or winter because that’s when they’re supposed to be resting. Salts might build up and damage the roots of your ZZ Plant if you fertilize it too much. If your houseplant is strained, such as bone dry or dripping wet, don’t fertilize it.

Soil

My favorite combination is 3 parts potting soil, 1 part succulent and cactus mix, and 1 part coco coir. I always add a few handfuls of compost (how many depends on the size of the pot) and a 1/4-1/2 layer of worm compost on top.

Repotting/Transplanting

If you live in a warm environment, you can do this in the spring or summer; if you live in a cold climate, you can do it in the early fall. Your plant will need to be repotted sooner if it grows too quickly.

Both of mine are in plastic pots, but terra cotta or ceramic would work just as well. To allow them more room to expand, I potted them up a couple sizes.

How do I know if my ZZ plant is healthy?

Leaf burn on any plant, especially one famed for its bright-green, waxy leaf like the ZZ Plant, can be disconcerting. A healthy ZZ should have near-flawless, uniform leaves, but if some of them appear scalded or scorched, there’s a problem.

EXCESSIVE LIGHT: The most common cause of leaf burn is exposure to too much light. ZZ Plants, as previously stated, prefer indirect light. Because they resemble succulents, we mistakenly believe they require more light than they do, and their leaves become scorched as a result.

OVERFEEDING: Similar to leaf curling from overfeeding, ZZ Plants can suffer from nutrition burn when they absorb too much fertilizer at once, causing leaf tissue to degrade and seem burned or scalded.

IF THERE IS AN EXCESS OF LIGHT, CHECK THE POSITION OF YOUR ZZ PLANT. You may discover that you placed it in an area that receives too much direct sunlight during the day. Choose a location that receives a lot of indirect light, such as further in the room away from the window or on the north side of your home.

Sunburned leaves are unlikely to recover completely, therefore if a leaf is severely sunburned, it’s preferable to prune it off. Leave the afflicted leaves on the plant if it’s a minor case. They should heal and function normally.

OVERFEEDING: The first step is to purge your ZZ Plant of any excess fertilizer in the soil in order to avoid further scorching. Water thoroughly, allowing excess water to run from the bottom of the pot and draining the soil.

Some leaves may be irreparably scorched, while others will recover to some extent and be alright. Wait a week or so after flushing out your soil to see which ones will survive and which should be cut out.

How can I make my ZZ plant grow faster?

Stick your finger into the soil about two inches deep to check the moisture level in your ZZ plant soil. Even if the soil is wet, there is still plenty of water in it. If the plant is dry and crumbly, give it plenty of water and make sure it drains correctly.

By putting a finger through the drain hole, you may also inspect the dirt. You can water again if there is only a little degree of wetness. Wait a few more days if your finger is wet and has soil attached to it.

Another way is comparable to how you would verify the doneness of a baking cake. Pull out a wooden chopstick or skewer that has been inserted into the soil to the bottom of the pot. There’s no need to moisten your chopstick if it comes back damp with earth adhering to it.
