A waxy layer known as epicuticular wax, sometimes known as farina, produces a white or silvery-blue film on the leaves of succulent plants. All kinds of plants have it on their stems, leaves, and fruit, but succulents like Echeveria, Pachyphytum, Sedeveria, Kalanchoe, and Graptoveria, to mention a few, have it the most frequently. Remember that not all members of the genus examples featured here have powdery farina.
You undoubtedly noticed a small mark if you’ve ever unintentionally brushed against your succulent’s powdery leaves. In reality, what you’re doing is eliminating the bloom, which, depending on the species, may be permanent. If it regenerates, it doesn’t go back to its previous level.
Epicuticular wax, named as such because it develops above the cuticle on the epidermis, is actually a small number of microscopic crystals that develop on the cuticle of a plant’s surface and aid in the plant’s ability to repel water. It’s also sometimes referred to as “farina,” which is what I’ve always named it. This is referred to as being “glaucous” on succulents, which is simply defined by Webster as “having a powdered or waxy coating that provides a frosted look and tends to rub off.”
Does removing the epicuticular wax harm your plants?
It serves as a hydrophobic covering that helps shield the plant from the sun, water, infections, and insects, therefore you should avoid removing it. Simply put, hydrophobic means that it repels water.
Avoid using pesticides (which you ought to attempt to do anyway!). Fungicides and plant-based oils, such as neem, can eliminate all of the farina from a mixture. Consider systematically treating plants that have both pests and farina as a soil drench. For mealy bugs, I’ve also successfully misted leaves covered in farina with a mixture of 50 percent rubbing alcohol and water. To prevent burn, always try the product first and let it completely dry in the shade.
Use a very soft makeup brush or blow it away to remove soil from your plant’s leaves. Avoid using your fingers since they may spoil the powdered effect due to skin oils.
Farina helps keep the leaves clean, which is one aspect of it that I especially like on succulents. Dirt, microorganisms, and other particles are caught in the water’s surface beads, which roll them away. The Lotus Effect is the name for this. Last but not least, the waxy covering helps keep water inside the plant, allowing succulent leaves to stay lovely and plump.

Every portion of the plant, including the stem, leaves, and even the flowers, develops farina. The quantity can change based on the species, as well as within a single species, depending on the region of growth (both in cultivation and in the wild). Unlike soft, fuzzy succulents that can’t be removed with a wipe, farina can.
A healthy plant has an even covering of epicuticular wax. If you observe a mottled appearance, it can be caused by a sickness or by high humidity. This is why it’s crucial to routinely inspect your plants (I have no idea why I’m even bringing this up because I already know you spend hours staring at your plants, OR IS THAT JUST ME? Don’t respond to it.
I can still clearly recall my first time using farina. It was really thick near the base of a flapjacks paddle plant, and I simply knew it was some kind of mold or disease. Can you see why I was concerned? It was so heavy that it was coming off in pieces. It turned out to be epicuticular wax exclusively.
So how do you tell the difference between farina and powdery mildew?
Well, farina is more evenly distributed across the surface of the plant, whereas powdery mildew begins splotchy and steadily develops since it is brought on by fungal spores. Your plant will also start to become sick from powdery mildew, which will result in leaf deformation and aesthetic harm. Another reason to keep an eye on your plants’ health is because of this. You want to stop things like this before they spread to other people.
It’s almost hard for plants to arrive in the mail without having some of the farina washed away. It is displayed below in the Echeveria Lauii. Waiting for it to grow out is the only option (this one did, and it looks wonderful now!). When this occurs, there is absolutely no reason to be alarmed, and the sender is not at fault. It’s merely a step in the procedure. THERE WILL BE GROWTH!
Another specimen of an Echeveria pollux is seen below. This one started out without farina on nearly all of its leaves, but it has since grown out. They gradually climbed to the bottom as time went on and fresh leaves sprouted from the middle. As the plant matures, the first leaves will eventually wither and die (which is totally normal).
While investigating farina on succulents, I came across some information about Giant Chalk Dudleya (D. brittonii) that grows in fissures on steep volcanic rocks that I thought was intriguing. (Unfortunately, I don’t have a picture of one, but you can still admire this crest.) Depending on where they grow, there are two types: one has a thick, glaucous coating, while the other does not. The UV reflectance of the Brittonia that does have farina is astounding, at 83 percent, more than that of any other plant species. (Wait, what?) However, the same species’ non-glaucous variants only provided 10% reflectance!
If you have a succulent that has had its powdery farina removed (perhaps because you accidentally cleaned the entire plant with horticultural oil like I did), it may be best to keep it shaded from the sun until it is acclimated again. This is because powdery farina is not only attractive, but it is crucial to plant health. Keep in mind that farina on succulents doesn’t return to how it was before, so be careful not to rub it off!

Why is there white stuff on my succulent?
Powdery mildew is rare in succulents, but it can occur in some species.
The symptoms of powdery mildew include a white coating that develops into splotchy areas on the leaves.
Usually, powdery mildew develops on succulent leaves after prolonged contact with water or when the soil is very damp.
It is best to isolate your succulent as soon as you discover any powdery mildew symptoms to stop it from spreading. Use safer soap or isopropyl alcohol to remove the mildew.
Can you remove mildew that is powdery?
For a fast visual inspection, note that powdery mildew can be scraped off the leaves. Eventually, mildew will cover leaves and entire plants, limiting photosynthesis, plant vigor, and bud quality. These fuzzy mycelium patches release airborne spores that quickly attack nearby plants.

The labels “farina” and “glaucous” (GLAH-cuss) leaves are strange for a typical occurrence in succulents and plants in general. Glaucous leaves have the look of the white. They are referring to the waxy or white, hazy layer that is seen on many succulent leaves and stems. You may have tried to wipe it away and discovered that it was simple to clear, but there was more there than you initially thought. The plant employs this entirely normal and healthy development as defense. It can be worrying since it resembles several other white substances that are seriously harmful, such as whiteflies, mealybugs, and powdery mildew. Let’s examine this more closely to see what it’s all about.
What does powdery mildew on a succulent look like?
Succulents are without a doubt among the easiest plants to care for. They are the perfect plant to take care of, especially if you’re a busy office worker who is constantly on the go because they can thrive in neglect and come in many forms, colors, and sizes.
Succulents can, however, experience issues much like any other houseplants, particularly if their growing environment changes. Nothing is more aggravating and bothersome than fungus problems.
They are without a doubt the worst. They have the ability to appear out of nowhere while also swiftly destroying your succulent plants!

Particle Mildew
One of the fungi that is the simplest to recognize is powdery mildew. It has symptoms that are highly unusual and tends to grow superficially, or epiphytically, on plant surfaces.
A succulent with powdery mildew infection may likely appear to have been covered in a traditional white or grayish powdery coating. On the leaves and stems, it typically starts as round, powdery white patches. And as the infection worsens, the spots will eventually turn black and turn yellow-brown. Before the plant really wilts and dies, it will also start to have twisted and deformed leaves.
A mild case of Powdery Mildew could disappear by itself. But if you’re curious, copper is a really powerful fungicide for this particular type of fungus. Just be sure to carefully read the label recommendations because too much copper will be bad for the soil and the plant.
A gallon of water can be combined with one tablespoon of baking soda and one-half teaspoon of liquid, non-detergent soap. This mixture can then be sprayed liberally on the affected leaves.
NOTE:
– Be sure to water your plant thoroughly before applying, and avoid doing so during the day.
– Sunburn can be brought on by baking soda. To avoid issues, it’s preferable to try 1 or 2 leaves initially.
Black mold, commonly referred to as sooty mold,
The fungal that causes the least harm to succulents is sooty or black mold. This fungus typically indicates that a sap-sucking insect, such as mealybugs, aphids, whiteflies, or scale, has invaded the plant. It will manifest as black or dark brown, superficial fungal growth on the aerial sections of plants, especially the upper leaf surfaces.
Spray a mixture of horticultural oil or neem oil on your plant’s afflicted leaves in the early evening. Neem oil is less harmful and works well as a fungicide to eliminate sooty mold from plants, especially those that are heavily afflicted.
How can white mold on plants be removed?
Isolate the plant right once if you discover the white residue on the foliage that signifies a mealybug infestation. Scrape away any white residue and patches on plant leaves that you detect as a mealybug home pest control measure. After that, wash down the entire plant with a mixture of one part alcohol to three parts water and a little dish soap (without bleach). Repeat the procedure after letting the plant settle for a few days.
Applying neem oil or a pesticide to the plant is another at-home mealybug pest control technique. You’ll probably require multiple treatments.
Mealybugs are destructive and challenging to get rid of, but it is possible if you pay close attention to the warning indications of an infestation.
How can you naturally get rid of powdery mildew on plants?
One undesirable visitor to my garden at this time of year is powdery mildew. Here are some all-natural treatments for this plant ailment, including a DIY baking soda spray.
Signs of Powdery Mildew
Squash, lilacs, phlox, bee balm, and other plants’ leaves initially develop white patches that give them the appearance of having been sprinkled with baby powder. It initially wipes off or washes away before coming back.
On many plants, the afflicted leaves eventually turn yellow and die, while some plants keep going.
Causes of Powdery Mildew
My phlox doesn’t have powdery mildew, which is presumably because it’s brought on by several fungi that affect various plant species rather than just one. The powdery mildew you get on squash is different from the mildew you find on roses or beans. Three separate powdery mildew fungi are after cucurbits including pumpkins, squash, cucumbers, and melons, and they may flourish in both humid and dry conditions. The fungi’s windborne spores can’t really be avoided. It makes sense why the squash is hit every year.
Remedies for Powdery Mildew
Numerous home cures exist, but according to study, weekly spraying with simple water can be successful. While the spores dislike rain and water, they enjoy humidity. If the leaves are damp, they cannot grow or begin to germinate. Contrary to what most gardeners, including myself, believe, this is true.
When powdery mildew was a problem, I once tried to prevent it by growing squash in our high tunnel. I reasoned that if I could keep the leaves dry, the mildew wouldn’t effect them. Of course, they developed the most severe case of powdery mildew I had ever seen! High humidity and no rain to wet the leaves made it the ideal environment for it to flourish. Another hard lesson to learn!
There are a number of natural remedies that, if utilized promptly, have been shown to be successful if you choose to try them instead of drinking plain water. Early on, they can halt or stop the spread, but once the fungi have taken hold in the leaves, they can no longer do so.
Homemade Baking Soda Spray
Baking soda is used in numerous of these treatments. Just keep in mind that baking soda can burn plants and can accumulate in your soil, possibly leading to calcium, magnesium, and iron deficiency. Baking soda can be exchanged for potassium bicarbonate. To make sure they won’t harm your plants, test these sprays on a tiny patch of ground first.
- In a gallon of water, combine 1 tablespoon baking soda, 1 tablespoon vegetable oil, and 1 teaspoon dish soap.
- In a gallon of water, combine 2 tablespoons of Murphy’s oil soap and 4 tablespoons of baking soda.
- To 1 gallon of water, add 2 to 3 tablespoons of vinegar. Considering that vinegar can burn plants, make sure to test this first.
- An organic fungicide is neem. Observe the directions on the label.
- Combine 10 parts water and 1 part milk.
- Even though mouthwash is not organic, several people vouch for it as an efficient fungicide. They advise mixing 3 cups of water with 1 cup of mouthwash.
It is advised that you switch up your treatments once a week to prevent the fungi from becoming resistant to your homemade spray. Use milk the following week, then baking soda. Spraying early in the day will give the leaves time to dry before dusk, whether you use water or a home treatment.
Look for mildew-resistant kinds when introducing new plants to your flower gardens. Avoid overfertilizing plants with heavy nitrogen fertilizers since tender new growth is prone to infection. Plants should be placed far enough apart to allow for enough airflow. Snip off the lower leaves if the infection begins there. Ensure that plants receive adequate direct sunshine. The best medicine is avoidance!
