What Are Succulent Fruits

Simple, indehiscent, single-seeded achenial fruits have a thin, dry, woody or leathery pericarp.

Achenial fruits come in five basic varieties:

Achene, Figure 7.4-A:

The testa of the seed is not attached to the pericarp of the fruit. The seed only has one point of attachment to the pericarp. Achenes can emerge from a superior monocarpellary pistill with a unilocular and uniovulated ovary, like the Mirabilis jalapa, but they are more frequently seen as aggregate fruits, like those of Ranunculus, Clematis, and other plants.

Caryopsis 2. (Fig. 7.4-B).

It is comparable to an achene, however in this instance the pericarp and testa are fused together like they are in cereals. It is a future that is typical of the Gramineae family. For instance, wheat, maize, etc.

Third, Cypsela (Fig. 7.4 -C)

A defining property of the Compositae family is number 11. A characteristic of the fruit is the existence of a pappus with a crown of hairlike processes that aids in wind-dispersal. The fruit wall is free of testa. As in the case of Sonchus, Dandelion, etc., the fruit grows from a bicarpellary, syncarpous, internal ovary with a single basal ovule.

Samara 4.

It grows from a pistil that is monocarpellary and has an ovary that is superior, unilocular, and uniovuled. To aid in dispersal, the pericarp is enlarged to produce wings. Example Elm and Holoptelea (Fig. 7.4.-D).

5. Nut:

Harder and leathery or woody is the pericarp. It can grow from a superior or inferior, uniovuled ovary with a simple or compound pistil. Example species are Quercus (Oak), Litchi, and Cashew-nut Trapa (Fig. 7.5). The pericarp of litchi is tough and leathery. Aril, a testa protrusion from the micropylar end that becomes juicy, is the component that can be eaten.

(C) Schizocarpic, also known as splitting fruits:

These fruits could be viewed as a middle ground between achenial (which are indehiscent) and capsular (which have numerous seeds) fruits. The fruit separates into mericarps, which are a number of indehiscent single-seeded segments that only release their seeds when the pericarp becomes rotten. Cocci are fruit fragments with one seed that have dehisced in some situations.

The five types of schizocarpic fruits are as follows:

1. Observation

Fruits like Mimosas and Acacia arabica, which are constricted between the seeds and typically split into segments holding one or more seeds, are examples of this (Fig. 7.6). The fruit in the case of radish is a lomentaceous siliqua.

2. Samara compound

This is a kind of fruit with two or more chambers that develops from a syncarpous (also known as a complex) ovary. At maturity, the fruit splits up into single seeded mericarps and the pericarp extends in the shape of wings. for instance, EIm (Holoptelea), maple (Fig. 7.7).

Cremocarp 3.

This fruit has two seeds and is produced by an ovary that is bicarpellary, syncarpous, inferior, bilocular, and uniovuled. It is a common fruit of the umbelliferae family. The central axis, or carpophore, to which the two mericarps are still attached, serves as the dividing line. Stylopodia and persistent style are present, such as in coriander. (Fig. 7.8).

Four. Carcerulas

This fruit is produced by a multilocular, superior syncarpous pistil with axile placentation. The berry separates into several mericarps. Althaea rosea, Salvia, and Ocimum, for instance (Fig. 7.9).

5. Regma:

It comes from a polycarpellary pistil, which divides into an equal number of Cocci (dehiscent segments), or carpels. Castor regma separates into three cocci due to its tricarpellary syncarpous pistil origin. Similar to how the regma of geranium, which comes from five carpels, separates into five cocci (Fig. 7.10).

Fruits that are fleshy or succulent:

Simple fruits with a fleshy pericarp, these. The three types of simple, delicious fruits are drupe, pome, and berrie.

1. Drupe:

The pericarp, or fruit wall, is divided into three parts: the stony endocarp, the fleshy mesocarp, and the thin epicarp (skin).

As a result, it is also known as stone fruit and goes by the names of mango, coconut, peach, almond, trapa, etc. Mesocarp is luscious and tasty in mangoes. The endocarp of a coconut is edible, while the mesocarp is fibrous. Epicarp and mesocarp are peeled off of almonds, leaving just the hard endocarp visible in commercially available fruits. Cotyledons are the portion to eat (Fig. 7.11).

2. Pome:

It is a straightforward, edible thalamus that surrounds the genuine fruit, such as an apple, pear, loquat, or other fruit, which is inside the false fruit (Fig. 7.12).

Berry and Bacca, third:

Berry is a soft fruit, and the seeds are its only hard element (Fig. 7.13). Epicarp, mesocarp, and endocarp are different types of pericarp. These layers may combine to create pulp, which usually separates from the placenta and contains embedded seeds.

As with brinjal, grape, and tomato, the fruits produced by superior ovary are referred to as superior or real berries. False berries, like bananas and guavas, are made from inferior ovaries, and their thalamus and pericarp are united. Banana’s epicarp and thalamus (Fig. 7.13C) are peeled away to reveal its edible mesocarp and endocarp, which contain embedded immature seeds. Epicarp and mesocarp from dates are edible, but the papery, thin endocarp should be discarded with the seed.

Some fruits differ from the typical berry in some ways:

I Pepo:

This is the result of a parietal placentation in an inferior ovary that is unilocular or erroneously trilocular. The placenta’s seeds are still affixed to it. Like in cucurbits, the outer ring is quite hard (Fig. 7.13D).

Hesperidium (ii)

It arises from a superior, multilocuiar, superior, polycarpellary, syncarpous ovary with axile placentation. The endocarp projects inward to produce discrete chambers from which juicy ingrowths in the form of hair originate to make the edible component, such as in citrus (orange, lemon), where the epicarp forms the leathery peeling, mesocarp is in the form of fibers, and the endocarp forms the leathery peeling (Fig. 7.13E).

Amphisarca (iii)

It comes from the superior ovary, polycarpellary, syncarpous, and multilocuiar. Epicarp in this instance is woody. The inner layers of the pericarp, where the seeds are dispersed, become pulpy and edible. The testa is muclilagenous, such as those of Aegle marmelose (Fig. 7.13-1).

Fourth: Balusta

It is a fruit with a tough rind made of mesocarp and epicarp on the outside. Mesocarp folds inward to form chambers. A cluster of seeds is contained within each chamber, which is lined by a papery endocarp. Pomranate, for instance, has tasty, juicy testa covering the seeds (Fig. 7.13-G).

II. Fruits in general:

There are as many fruitlets produced by flowers with polycarpellary and apocarpous gynoecium as there are free ovaries, each of which produces one fruitlet. When these fruitlets create an etaerio of fruitlets, they are often free from one another but occasionally consolidate to resemble a single fruit. The kind of fruitlets that make up an aggregation fruit determines its name.

Achenes’s Etaerio

Fragaria (strawberry), Rose, Ranunculus, Nelumbium (lotus), and other plants have aggregates of achenes. Each fruitlet in this instance is an achene, and achenes have hairs. Numerous achenes are found in rose (Rosa) on a thalamus with a saucer (cup) form. The thalamus of the lotus (Nelumbium) turns spongy and has some achenes implanted in it. The fleshy, mature, and edible section of the strawberry [Fragaria] is the thalamus (Fig. 7.14).

2. Follicle etaeriosis:

The follicles of aconitum, catotropis, cryptostegia, and other plants exhibit etaeryo. Aconitum produces three fruitlets from each flower, whereas Calotroiis, Cryptostegia, and Michelia produce two fruitlets (follicles) per flower (Fig. 7.15).

3. Samaras’ Etaerio (Fig. 7.16).

It is possible to study it in the wingless samara plant Ailanthus.

4. Berries with etaerio:

Berries are found in a group in Artabotrys. Anona squomosa, sometimes known as the custard apple, has berries that develop extremely fleshy and are packed closely together to form a complicated single fruit (Fig. 7.17). Berries’ apices fuse together to produce a structure akin to a shared rind.

5. Drupe etaerio (Fig. 7.18)

It is a collection of tiny drupes or drupelets that form from various flower carpels and are placed in a group on a fleshy thalamus, such as Rubus idaeus.

Fruits that are Composites:

A multiple or composite fruit is one that forms from an entire inflorescence.

Composite fruits primarily fall into two categories:

One. Sorosis

The mulberry, pineapple, and jackfruit are examples of this kind of fruit (kathal). These fruits are produced from inflorescences of the catkin, spike, and spadix types (Fig. 7.19).

The mulberry (Morus indica) fruit grows from a catkin that contains dry achenes inside a fleshy perianth.

The blooms are placed on a thick, club-shaped peduncle in jack fruit. The bracts create more or less juicy chaffs around the viable fruits, which have juicy, delicious perianth lobes. The stiff rind’s spines stand in for the carpels’ stigmas. A testa made of membranous tissue covers each seed. The edible component of the pineapple (Ananas sativus) is created from the peduncle, perianth, and bracts; the ovaries are not very noticeable. The surface’s polygonal areas each stand in for a flower. The intercalary spike from which this fruit grows.

Syconus 2.

This Ficus-specific fruit grows from an inflorescence of the hypanthodium type. Female flowers within the closed receptacle (which turns fleshy) of the inflorescence of the fig, banyan, etc. (Fig. 7.21) evolve into achenes, giving rise to a multiple fruit of achenes.

Definition

Dry fruits are fruits (such as a capsule or achene) in which the pericarp is not succulent or pulpy, whereas fleshy fruits are fruits (such as a berry, drupe, or pome) consisting primarily of soft succulent tissue.

Development of the Pericarp

At maturity, the pericarp of fleshy fruit is soft and pulpy, whereas the pericarp of dry fruits is hard, papery, or dry. Thus, this is the primary distinction between dry and fleshy fruits.

Layers of the Pericarp

The epicarp, mesocarp, and endocarp are the three layers of the pericarp of a fleshy fruit, but there is no distinction between the layers in the pericarp of dry fruits. As a result, this is another distinction between fleshy and dry fruits.

Dispersal of Seeds

Additionally, another distinction between fleshy and dry fruits is how the seeds are dispersed. In contrast to dry fruits, which are primarily adapted to wind, ejection, or attachment to the fur or feathers of animals, fleshy fruits are adapted for seed dissemination by animals.

Conclusion

Simple fruits with a mushy, pulpy pericarp are known as fleshy fruits. Their endocarp has become rigid. Importantly, the pericarp is edible; as a result, it helps animals spread fruit. Moreover, drupe, berry, and pome are the three categories of fleshy fruits. The other category of simple fruits, known as dry fruits, is distinguished by its hard, papery, or dry pericarp. They are designed to spread via wind or expulsion. Dehiscent and indehiscent fruits are moreover the two primary categories of dry fruits. The composition of the pericarp is the primary distinction between fleshy and dry fruits.

Succulents may they bear fruit?

Whatever you choose to name it—prickly pear, Indian fig, cactus pear—this is one of the tastiest succulents. Although the ficus-indica species is most frequently utilized economically, any opuntia species can be eaten! Their broad, flat “pads” make them easy to identify.

How to eat:

The fleshy fruit inside the pads should be eaten after being peeled. Despite having many seeds, it is fairly tasty. Cactus pads can be eaten as well. You must use caution around the spines! They have several microscopic “hairs” in addition to the huge spikes, which are readily burned off. Eat the peeled pad raw, grilled, or broiled!

Are bananas juicy fruits?

Bananas can be classified as a fruit or not. What four sorts of fruit are there?

Fruits are categorized based on the arrangement they originate from. Simple, aggregate, numerous, and accessory fruits are the four different categories. Dehiscent fruits—dry fruits with hard or papery shells that split open to release the ripe seed—are distinguished from non-dehiscent fruits by their lack of a split (indehiscent fruits). The legume (such as the pea and bean pod), which splits at both edges, and the follicle (such as milkweed and larkspur), which splits only on one side, are among the dehiscent fruits. Other examples are the dry fruits of the poppy, snapdragon, lily, and mustard. The single-seeded achene of the buttercup and composite flowers, the caryopsis (grain), the nut (such as the acorn and hazelnut), and the fruits of the carrot and parsnip are examples of indehiscent fruits (not to be confused with their edible fleshy roots).

A multitude of tiny drupes (drupelets), each of which formed from a distinct ovary of a single flower, make up an aggregation fruit (such as a blackberry or a raspberry). The ovaries of several flowers growing in a cluster evolve into a variety of fruits, such as pineapple and mulberries. The strawberry is actually a number of tiny achenes (mistakenly termed seeds) outside of a core pulpy pith, which is the larger receptacle or base of the flower. Accessory fruits contain tissue generated from plant sections other than the ovaries. Receptacle (stem) tissue can also be found in the pineapple’s core. The pome (apple and pears, for example), whose genuine fruit is the central core and whose fleshy edible component is swelling stem tissue, is the most well-known accessory fruit. The rind of the pepo (berry-like fruit) of the squash, cucumber, and melon, as well as the skin of the banana, are all stem tissues.
