In my opinion, water is the best medium for growing fiddle leaf figs. My favourite strategy is to grow plants in water whenever possible! That is because I enjoy being able to see the root’s growth. You kind of have no idea how a cutting will develop if you just place it in the ground.
Here are the procedures I advise using to grow a fiddle leaf fig cutting in water. For both leaf and tiny stem cutting propagation, I suggest using this technique!
Step 1: Take a cutting from a healthy plant
So you can apply this technique to both small stem cuttings and leaves. That’s because the roots grow using essentially the same strategy as the leaves do “stem support system in them. Be sure to get the small veins if you’re taking a leaf “the branch or node that connects the leaf to the stem.
Warning: even if the leaf roots, taking a clip from it could not result in a new plant. If you lost a leaf on the plant or were pruning your plant, it would be a great experiment to do. But in the end, I advise taking a stem cutting with buds.
Just make sure the stem has enough length when you cut a little stem to grow into a plant. In order to get the plant well-rooted in water, remove a couple of the lower leaves.
Make sure the cutting isn’t too big and has a reasonable number of leaves. Another justification for removing the lower leaves is this. You want the new plant’s energy to go toward creating new roots rather than maintaining its current leaf structure! To save energy, you can alternatively cut the leaves in half, but I don’t like this method because I prefer the plant to look whole when I plant it. In my perspective, removing the lowest leaves is preferable.
Step 2: Put the cutting in water
Place the cutting in some sunlight. Mine is in the propagation station for test tubes I made. Refresh the water around once each week. On the bottom of the cutting, growth will soon start to become apparent.
The new growth will be white and resemble little cauliflower-like bunches. That’s great! However, wait a while before pulling the cutting to plant it. Wait a few more weeks and be patient for some healthy new roots to emerge.
When you move the plant to soil, this will lessen the shock. It will already have a nice root system established, which should facilitate speedy adaptation to its new surroundings. Even as the cuttings are rooted in water, you could detect fresh growth coming from the top! Then this is fantastic!
Step 3: Plant the newly rooted cutting

I prefer to make things as favorable to myself as possible whenever I can. As a result, I find that no commercial growers employ the water approach when deciding how to best propagate.
If you give it any thought, however, it makes sense. Since Ficus lyrata is not an aquatic plant, water propagation will not be the best environment for it to flourish in. But since most who attempt it succeed, it must be able to grow quite well in water.
Use a cutting with roughly 3 nodes, as mentioned above, rather than a single leaf for the greatest outcomes. (For an explanation of why using single leaves is not a wise choice, see below.)
Place the sliced piece in fresh water in a dimly lit area. To keep the oxygen levels stable, change the water every several days.
Here is where I fail with this approach. Normally, I forget. In comparison to an unwatered plant pot that seems dry and feels light as a feather, the water in the glass appears the same.
Because plants require oxygen, soil is a better environment for them than water. While there is some oxygen in water, it fades off the surface when the water is motionless. (A bubbler is required in aquariums in order to maintain the water’s oxygen levels.)

Figs appear to root from almost everywhere, with extensive rooting happening along the internodes, in contrast to some species, such olives, which root exclusively from the nodes.
