The spots are merely white at first. Without treatment, rust spots turn brownish-orange for a while before turning black, indicating that your snake plant is going to die.

The bacteria Sclerotium rolfsii, which lives in plant soil, causes southern blight. Southern blight, rather than rust, will cause your snake plant to collapse over. Leaf discolouration is also visible (typically yellowing but also browning). Because the Sclerotium rolfsii may reach the roots, the snake plant is effectively doomed.

You should also keep an eye out for red leaf spot, a fungus that thrives in warm, damp environments, such as your snake plant after it’s been irrigated. Helminthosporium infections affect the leaves, causing brown or red patches.

How to Save Your Snake Plant from Droopy Leaves

You now have a better understanding of why your snake plant has toppled over. Now is the time to repair your plant in the hopes of saving its life. Here’s what I advise you to do.

Dry out Your Overwatered Snake Plant

Let’s say you’ve nearly drowned your snake plant, but it’s still hanging on. Great! It’s most likely still possible to save it.

Reduced watering frequency will not suffice at this time. You must also remove the plant from its damp environment.

To begin, remove your snake plant from its present container. When taking a larger plant from its pot, I always recommend enlisting the help of a second person, and the snake plant is no exception, since many of the leaning snake plants are between 2 and 4 feet tall.

Hold the snake plant at the base and don’t yank it by the leaves when removing it from the pot! Your plant is probably so sensitive and mushy right now that the leaves are about to fall off.

It’s time to check the roots of the snake plant now that it’s out of its pot. If your snake plant has more white roots than black roots, it can be saved.

If the roots are primarily brown or black, they’ve deteriorated to a large extent. You might be able to save your snake plant’s life, but how much of it or how many of its leaves you can save is up to you.

Remove any brown or black roots with clean gardening shears, cutting till you reach the white part (but not the white roots themselves). Before you use your gardening shears on another plant, make sure they’re clean.

Fill a new container with fresh dirt and place your snake plant in it. Because the fresh soil is bone-dry, you must water your plant immediately away, but please begin watering the snake plant more sparingly from now on.

Ditch a Watering Schedule and Feel the Soil Instead

How much water should you give your plant? That is debatable. Your snake plant will absorb water more quickly in the hot months of spring, summer, and even early autumn.

Instead of mentally counting down the days, I always recommend doing the fingertip test. When performing the fingertip test, you insert a clean finger into the soil and feel how moist it is.

You should water your snake plant today, ideally right now, if there is no moisture at all, even a few inches deep. Plan to water the plant again in a day or two, maybe a couple of days, once the soil is somewhat damp. There is no need to do anything further until the earth dries out.

Make Sure To Use “Snake Plant-Friendly Soil” If Possible

For your snake plant, what kind of soil should you use? The snake plant, Sansevieria trifasciata, prefers a soilless potting mix that includes peat moss, coconut coir, perlite, vermiculite, bark, and/or sand.

Snake plants don’t like regular potting soil. But, just to be clear, if you don’t have any other options, it’s fine to grow your snake plant in regular ol’ potting soil. When you have the time, money, and resources, you may always upgrade the potting soil to use more “species specific” potting soil.

Alternatively, some African violet soil mix works as well. Check the mix’s ingredients to check if it contains any of the above-mentioned ingredients.

An Easy Way To Make Snake Plant Soil At Home

One part gardening soil, one part peat moss, and two parts perlite or builder’s sand are mixed together. This type of soil provides the aeration that a snake plant need while also draining well enough to prevent root rot.

Repot Your Snake Plant Every Few Years

With the exception of root rot, you shouldn’t have to repot your snake plant very often. If you’re doing it once a year, that’s excessive. No plant enjoys being moved, since it can cause stress, causing the leaves of your snake plant to wither or fall.

Move your snake plant to a new pot every two years at the absolute least. Some snake plant owners are willing to wait six years, but be cautious.

Prune the Roots

When it’s time to move your snake plant, I recommend doing a thorough root check one again. This time, you’re looking for indicators that your snake plant is becoming rootbound rather than root rot (hopefully not).

If you can’t get the plant out of its container without a lot of effort, the roots have probably started to attach to the sides of the pot. You’ll notice the distinctive root spiral or tangle once you’ve finally freed your snake plant.

Using clean gardening shears, cut the roots back significantly. Replace the pot on your snake plant a little more frequently than every six years to avoid the plant becoming rootbound again.

Know the Signs of Fungal Diseases and Treat Immediately

To emphasize, fungus is a primary killer of snake plants. Learn the signs and symptoms of plant rust, southern blight, and red leaf spot so you can notice these bacterial illnesses in your snake plant and save it.

To treat rust, use clean gardening shears to remove the infected leaves and disinfect them thereafter. This keeps the fungal illness from spreading to your other healthy plants. If your snake plant has southern blight, you’ll need to isolate it, remove all of its soil, and replace it with fresh soil.

  • Snake plants do well in hot, dry environments. For the summer, consider placing potted ones in bright shade outside. They will flourish in the landscape where there is no frost or snow. Just make sure these plants aren’t invasive in your area by checking with local nurseries.
  • Snake plants are slow-growing and rarely require repotting (they actually grow better when pot-bound). Low-light plants may need to be repotted every 5 to 10 years. Expect to transfer snake plants in stronger light every 3 to 5 years.
