We do not advise using Martins Permethrin 13.3% because the product labels do not indicate applications to ornamentals for scale. Talstar P would be our suggestion. It is an insecticide that is suitable for use on trees, bushes, and shrubs as well as on lawns and ornamentals. For insects that try to enter your home, you can use it both inside and outside. Despite Talstar P’s stellar reputation for being extremely kind to plants, care should still be made to prevent coming into contact with blossoms.

Our customers are sending us a ton of samples of houseplant leaf with various bug issues throughout this chilly winter. Homes with low humidity make ideal habitats for spider mites and other insects. Check for insects on your indoor plants! Use a magnifying glass to examine your plants. Examine the branch axils and undersides of leaves in great detail.
Read the label’s instructions and warnings completely before using any pesticides. Despite the fact that a cure is described as organic or natural, recommendations and safety precautions still need to be followed! Pay close attention to the ingredients list on a label! Two pesticides that have identical spelling and pronunciation are a case in point. A synthetic pesticide called permethrin can be found in many items marketed for use in the home and garden. Permethrin can remain in the environment for up to four weeks, depending on the concentration. A natural, organic pesticide called pyrethrin is created from pyrethrum daisy extracts. Pyrethrin kills instantly and with no aftereffects. NOTE: The labels of both insecticides contain cautionary statements.
Symptom: Plants leaves become yellow and dirty looking, then eventually dry up and drop. Fine webbing may be visible under leaves.
Cure: Use this method to find spider mites: Put a white piece of paper or a plate underneath a branch, then tap it firmly. Since the mites are often red and around the size of a pinhead, they will be simple to spot. Shower the plant; use a sponge to remove the leaves, and give it a good rinsing. Dry conditions are ideal for spider mite reproduction. Using a vaporizer or misting humidifier, raise the relative humidity surrounding your plants. It will also assist to place the plants in a saucer with gravel and water.
Spray the plant with insecticidal soap, Bonide’s Bon Neem (derived from neem tree seeds), or Indoor Pharm for an organic/natural remedy (made from plant oils) Every seven to ten days, repeat the procedure. Check the plant every week!
Conventional Treatment: Move the plants to the garage or, if possible, outside and spray them with Ortho’s Orthonex or Green Thumb Flying Insect Killer (with Permethrin). Bring the plants back inside. As directed on the label, repeat treatments.
Diagnosis: Mealy BugsCoccusheporidum
Treatment: Keep afflicted plant isolated; these pests are difficult to eradicate! Mealy insects consume surplus plant sap and excrete it. Molds can develop on the surface of this clingy coating, which is known as honeydew. As many pests as you can remove with rubbing alcohol and a toothbrush or cotton swab.
Treatment that is organic or natural is to thoroughly spray the plant with insecticidal soap or Houseplant Pharm and repeat in seven days. Maintain weekly inspections!
Conventional Treatment: Apply Bonide’s Houseplant systemic granules to the soil first. Take the plant outside once more, this time to a heated adjoining garage, and spray it with Orthonex (product contains both insecticide and fungicide). Reintroduce the plant indoors and keep it separate from other plants. Recurring therapy in 10 days. Note: Use the systemic granules and spray with the organic/natural remedies described above if you can’t spray the plant outside in the garage. Keep in mind that these animals are difficult to control, therefore do weekly inspections. Keep the plants isolated until the issue has been resolved. Maintaining inspections is essential to avoiding situations where the plant may have to be destroyed due to significant infestations.
Symptom: Leaves and stems are covered with small, oval shaped pimples that squash easily. Honey dew may coat the leaves (see Mealy Bugs). Plant lacks vigor, eventually dropping leaves.
Cure: Scale (Crawler) eggs and larvae hide under their mothers’ shells. Using a sponge or brush, scrub away as many pests as you can before thoroughly rinsing with a mix of 1 tablespoon dish soap and 1 cup warm water.
Use Bonide’s All Seasons Oil on plants that can handle horticultural oils as an organic or natural remedy. Use Indoor Pharm or insecticidal soap to spray.
Conventional Treatment: Apply Bonide’s Houseplant Systemic Granules to the soil. Use Orthonex or Bonide’s Eight ready to use, which both include water-based Permethrin, to mist the plants (see Mealy Bugs).
Symptom: Leaves turn a molted yellow, cure and drop. Small white insects flutter rapidly around plants. White specs resembling dandruff are found on the undersides of leaves. Honeydew may coat the leaves and stems.
Cure: Whitefly eggs that were laid in the soil of your indoor plants throughout the summer may hatch inside in the late winter. Set the nozzle to a stream and spray the undersides of the leaves up and away from the plant while watering plants outside. Whiteflies have soft bodies; as a result, some will be eliminated, and the eggs and remaining whiteflies will be blown into the lawn. Insects like ants will tidy up after you!
Natural/Organic Treatment: Place sticky traps. Using these traps to check insect issues early on is a wonderful idea! Apply insecticidal soap, Bonide’s Bon Neem, or Bonide’s Pyrethrin to the plants using Rootone. Whiteflies have a 3-day hatching cycle. As directed, repeat the treatments.
Traditional Therapy: Apply Houseplant Systemic Granules to the soil. Spray with Orthonex or Eight ready to use. (For suggestions on spraying, see Mealy Bugs) Repetition is required.
Symptoms: Small flies (resembling fruit flies) slowly buzzing around areas near your houseplants and often in your washrooms. Their larval, little worms about 1/8 of an inch resembling grubs with white bodies and black heads move in the potting soil near the stems.
Cure: These pests can be found in poor potting soil or dirt that has been left exposed outside.
Sewer flies, sometimes known as fungus gnats, prefer moist, damp environments to thrive. Before rewatering, allow the top third of the plant’s soil to dry. Make sure the saucer is empty. It is impractical and unsafe to spray insecticide on these gnats while they are in flight. Around your plants, set up some sticky traps.
If you notice gnats in your bathrooms, pour bleach or toilet cleanser into the sink and bathtubs. To keep the air from escaping, plug the holes with a rag.
Sewer flies love the spills because they create the ideal nesting grounds. This issue could arise months after the bugs have left the area around your houseplants!
Repotting could be beneficial, however some larvae might be tangled up in the soil clump around the roots. Avoid digging up the dirt around the roots as this could harm the plant. Put fresh potting soil in the container, and wash it with a solution of 1 part bleach to 8 parts hot water. Water the plant after repotting, then generously sprinkle Diatomaceous Earth on top of the dirt in the pot and cover with Saran Wrap (reapply after watering). After coming into touch with the diatomaceous earth, the gnats and larvae will be sliced up and dehydrated.
Utilize Bacillus Thuringienis Israelensis to dispose of the larvae. In a gallon of warm water, add 1/2 a packet of Mosquito Beater granules and shake well. If using Mosquito Dunks, use 1/4 of the wafer. The grains should dissolve and the water should reach room temperature in a day. Shake the mixture well before soaking the soil of the diseased plants. For a week, use this combination to water your plants.

General information regarding commonly used garden insecticides is provided in this section. For detailed pest/insecticide advice, consult the table Insecticides for Home Vegetable Gardens.
Safely apply insecticides! Always carefully read the label of any insecticide before using it, and adhere to all personal protective equipment requirements as well as mixing and application instructions. The use instructions specified on the label are required by law and are created to ensure the applicator, the environment, and anyone using the area are all safe. Treat insecticides with the utmost respect. They are toxins, and prolonged exposure can lead to short-term and/or long-term health issues.
Make that the insecticide can be used on the produce being treated according to the label. There aren’t many pesticides that can be used on all garden-grown vegetable crops. Always check the label of a pesticide to make sure it is approved for use on the crop you are applying it on.
Observe and adhere to the pre-harvest window. The period of time needed between applying a pesticide and harvesting the crop is known as the pre-harvest interval, or PHI. Depending on the pesticide being used and the specific vegetable crop being treated, PHIs might vary significantly. The PHI for carbaryl (Sevin), for instance, is three days on tomatoes, seven days on Irish potatoes, and fourteen days on turnips. Consuming too many pesticide residues can happen if PHIs are not followed.
Specific Insecticides
Sevin is the most popular brand name used while selling carbaryl. For many years, this product has served as the industry standard for controlling insects in home vegetable gardens. It is approved for use on the majority of vegetables and effective against a wide variety of pests. It works very well against a variety of beetles. When used extensively, this treatment does have a propensity to exaggerate spider mites.
Another traditional insecticide for home vegetable gardens is malathion. It has the same broad range of pest control as carbaryl and is approved for use on most vegetables. It works particularly well for aphid, “bug, and certain beetle management.
Bt kurstaki: Certain insect species are poisoned by chemicals produced by the bacteria Bacillus thuringiensis. This bacteria comes in various species and strains, and they all produce distinct poisons. Certain caterpillars are poisoned by a substance that Bt kurstaki generates, whereas other insect species are unaffected. One of the more popular brand names for this substance is thuricid. It works best against caterpillars that feed on leaves, such as loopers and diamondback moths.
A relatively new microbial insecticide called Spinosad* is particularly efficient against a variety of caterpillar pests. Green Light Spinosad Lawn and Garden Spray and Fertilome Bore, Bagworm, Leafminer, and Tent Caterpillar Spray are two widely accessible brand names that are approved for usage on a variety of vegetable crops. Spinosad is quite efficient against the majority of pest caterpillars, but it is ineffective against the majority of other insect species. However, it also works well against Colorado potato beetles, leaf miners, and thrips. Spinosad in specific formulations is approved for usage in organic gardens.
Insecticidal soaps are fatty acid potassium salts. By destroying cell membranes, they manage insects that come into contact with them. They work well against pests with soft bodies, such as aphids, mites, and thrips. To successfully control the pest, it must be completely covered.
The majority of vegetables can be treated with insecticidal soaps, which have a short pre-harvest interval. One brand is Safer Insecticidal Soap, for instance.
The main pests that neem oil* effectively combats include aphids, mites, and whiteflies. It is marketed under numerous brand names and is intended for use on the majority of vegetables (Monterey 70 percent Neem Oil is one example). In order to get control, the pest must be completely covered.
Azadirachtin* is an organic substance with a 0-day PHI labeled for use on all vegetables. Although there are several commercial formulations available, home gardeners most frequently utilize the brand name azatrol. Azadirachtin is effective against a variety of insect pests, but it works best against those with soft bodies that sucking, like aphids and whiteflies. Despite coming from the same neem tree seed, azadirachtin and neem oil are not the same thing.
Most organic gardeners utilize the botanical insecticide pyrethrum, also known as pyrethrin. Most insects are quickly knocked down by this insecticide, however they frequently come back. To operate as a synergist, piperonyl butoxide (PBO) is frequently combined with pyrethrin. Despite the fact that piperonyl butoxide is not permitted in organic gardening, this improves the overall effectiveness and aids in stopping bugs from recovering. Pyrethrin or pyrethrin + PBO has a relatively short pre-harvest interval, is labeled for use on most vegetables, and is effective against a variety of insects. Its extremely brief residual activity does, however, place a cap on its effectiveness.
Only lately has acetamiprid been approved for use in backyard vegetable crops. It is marketed for the management of many other pests and is particularly effective against whiteflies and aphids. One well-known brand is Ortho Max Flower, Fruit, and Vegetable Insect Killer. This product is offered as a concentration and a spray that is ready to use.
A class of recently developed synthetic insecticides known as pyrethroids is based on the chemical found in the plant pyrethrum. These substances work well against a variety of insect pests and require very little usage. Currently, the following pyrethroid insecticides are approved for use in vegetable gardens at home.
- One of the most effective insecticides for home vegetable gardeners is methrin. It can be applied to a variety of crops and is effective against a variety of pests. Additionally, compared to most other pyrethroid pesticides, it has shorter preharvest intervals. Most farm and garden stores carry permethrin easily available, which is marketed under numerous brand names (Martin’s Vegetables Plus, Hi-Yield Garden, Pet & Livestock Insect Control, and Bonide Eight Insect Control Concentrate are three examples). Whiteflies and spider mites are resistant to permethrin, but it is ineffective against other beetle, insect, and caterpillar pests.
- Although bifenthrin is not labeled for all vegetable crops, it is a very helpful pyrethroid on the crops for which it is. A well-known brand name is Ortho Bug B Gon Insect Killer for Lawns and Gardens. Aphid and spider mite epidemics are somewhat less likely to be brought on by bifenthrin than by other pyrethroids.
- One of the latest pyrethroid insecticides is lambda cyhalothrin (Spectracide Triazicide Insect Killer for Lawns and Landscapes is the most common brand name). Although it is only approved for use on a very small number of vegetable crops, it is particularly efficient against a variety of different insect pests.
- One of the most established pyrethroid insecticides is esfenvalerate. It manages a wide variety of insect pests and is labeled for use on numerous different vegetable crops. One popular brand is Monterey Bug Buster II.
Applying Insecticides in Home Vegetable Gardens
Vegetables in your home garden can be treated with insecticides using a variety of techniques. Three of the most popular techniques are sprays that are ready to use, dusts, and liquids.
A few pesticides are available as ready-to-use formulations for dusts (5 percent Sevin Dust and 0.25 percent permethrin are two examples). Typically, dusts are administered with a shaker can; however, pesticide containers are frequently converted to double as shaker cans or hand-powered, pump-style dusters. Dusts have the benefit of being easier to use than sprays, but they typically perform less well. Dusts can also be challenging to apply thoroughly and uniformly, especially when utilizing the shaker-can approach. Additionally, a lot of individuals think dusts are ugly.
ready-to-use aerosols
There are several pesticides that are offered for sale as ready-to-use, or RTU, sprays that are intended for use in the backyard garden. Active compounds that are offered as RTUs include permethrin, carbaryl, cyhalothrin, cyfluthrin, and neem oil. These items arrive in hand-pump spray bottles that have already been diluted to their final-use strength. Applying spot treatments to specific plants with RTU treatments is quite practical. To employ them widely, though, would be too expensive.
Hand-pump sprayers with a single nozzle
In the home garden, single-nozzle hand-pump sprayers are the most popular tool for administering insecticides. They are available in quantities ranging from 1 quart to 5 gallons, the most popular size being 1 gallon. In accordance with the instructions on the label, they can be used to apply liquid concentrate, wettable powder, or wettable granule insecticides. Here is an illustration of a set of instructions that could be found on a liquid concentrate’s label: Spray runoff with a mixture of 1 tablespoon per gallon of water, being careful to aim the spray at the undersides of the leaves.
Air is pumped into the headspace above the pesticide mixture to operate hand-pump sprayers. When the spray valve is opened, the compressed air pushes the pesticide spray through the nozzle. The nozzle on the majority of hand sprayers may be used to change the size of the spray droplets from coarse to fine. After each usage, make sure to properly rinse the sprayer.
It is strongly advised against applying insecticides with a sprayer that has previously been used to apply herbicide in order to prevent severe crop damage. It is advisable to utilize separate sprayers for applying insecticides and fungicides, and one sprayer just for the application of herbicides. Clearly label each sprayer.
Caution!
1. Ensure that you read and adhere to all label instructions.
2. Take note of and monitor the pre-harvest window (PHI).
3. Keep pesticides out of the reach of minors and in a safe, secure location.
4. Immediately wash with soapy water if any insecticide gets on your body. After dusting or spraying, wash all exposed skin.
