I’ve been buying and building air plant displays for nearly ten years now, and one thing I’ve observed is that a lot of people have questions regarding air plant adhesive.
The air plants are virtually always glued in place when I pick up air plant displays or air plants in shells. This is frequently unnecessary because the plants aren’t being hung upside down or in a container that needs glue to stay in place. So I seldom ever use adhesive while creating an air plant decor piece. In essence, I only do it if it is required for the design to work.
Consider it this way: rather than caring for a houseplant, adhesive air plants are disposable, sort of like a long-lasting floral arrangement. The air plant must eventually be taken out of the glue if you want it to survive. In general, I believe the air plants shouldn’t be bonded into the shells because it will be harder to water and take care of them.

Finally, and maybe most critically, Tillandsia require the right amount of light. Many individuals attempt to maintain their air plants in too little light. In comparison to their natural surroundings, our dwellings are like caves. Keep them in an east or west facing window if at all possible. They may also be outside of or adjacent to a sunny south-facing window. With a few hours of direct daylight either in the morning or afternoon, the goal is to have bright indirect light throughout the day.

You can water the sponge in a variety of ways, including routine drenching, frequent misting, and sporadic soaking. You don’t want the sponge to entirely dry out.
Every day or every other day, misting with a little spray bottle is recommended. You can dip a plant two to three times per week in a bowl of water, in a terrarium with a deep drainage layer, or under the sink in a colander. Once a week, take the plants out of their container and soak them in a bowl of water for 10 to 1 hour. Whatever method you use, make sure to shake off any water that has accumulated in the cup of the leaves to keep the plants from decaying. Keep in mind that xeric cultivars require less frequent watering.
Tillandsia, like all plants, require occasional feedings for optimum growth. I advise mixing a solution of kelp with a well-balanced water-soluble orchid food. Half a dose every couple of weeks or a full dose every month to three months are also acceptable feeding schedules.
You should be able to successfully develop these small wonders now that you have this fundamental understanding!
Do air plants require soil to grow?
More like pets than other plants, air plants are adorable. It doesn’t matter if a variety is fuzzy, furry, spiky, or trailing—it is impossible to resist. Usually very little, soilless air plants are simple to grow. As their name suggests, air plants use scales on their leaves to absorb nutrients and water from the atmosphere. Watering Terrariums and Plants:
- If you water your plants while they are in your terrarium, too much moisture may become trapped amid the moss, rock, etc., leading to the rot of your plants.
- Before putting the plants back in your terrarium, remove them, soak or mist them, and then make sure they are totally dry.
- No water or moisture should be present in your terrarium or next to the Tillandsia.

Are shells beneficial to plants?
Sea shells benefit garden soil in two ways: by enhancing its structure and pH and by giving plants nutrients.
Your garden soil will benefit from improved aeration and drainage as well as a reduction in compaction following rain. They also give your soil nutrients and support pH balance. In general, seashells increase soil pH and can take the place of liming the soil. Be mindful that while seashells are excellent for your soil if it is acidic (pH below 7.0), they may cause an alkaline soil to have an excessively high pH. (pH above 7.0).
Chitin, a slow-release form of nitrogen found in shellfish shells, promotes plant development. A Washington Post article claims that adding sea shells to your soil promotes the growth of bacteria that consume chitin and break down the shells. After shell degradation is finished, the same bacteria go for alternative food sources and fight dangerous nematodes and other garden pests in the soil. Your soil’s health is further enhanced by doing this.
Also abundant in seashells is calcium, a crucial ingredient for plant growth. Calcium is necessary for your plants’ cell walls and cell membranes, claims CropLife. Without enough calcium, plants may stop producing flowers or fruit and have delayed growth. Tomato blossom end rot is frequently linked to a calcium deficit.
Can you use hot glue on seashells?

The black calico scallops, snail shells, Atlantic cockles, quahogs, and white half-quahog shells on the terra-cotta planters at left and the one below were used as decorations. For this project, uniform-sized shells work best.

Weathered shells go well with mercury mirror glass, which is sold in specialty glass shops. Cut the glass to size so that it may be mounted to the back of the wood by a framing shop.
-To complement your shells, paint the front of a flat wooden picture frame white or a soft color. For the surfaces that will be reflected in the mirror, such as the inside border and underside, use black paint.
Sort your shells according to size, shape, and color to create the rectangular mirror that is depicted above. Put them in even rows on the frame, lining the inner edge with delicate shells like snails, the middle row with full shells like tulips, and the outside edge with flat scallops or cockles to create a fluted border. Using extra-thick craft glue or hot glue, attach each shell to the frame one at a time.

How are succulents planted in seashells?
Succulent plants can live in small spaces and require little in the way of fertilizers and water. You may display your favorite succulents in a beautiful indoor or outdoor setting with a dish garden, which offers just the right amount of growth area. The succulents can be grown naturally in a huge open seashell. Succulents that do well in a seashell dish garden include crassulas, sedums, and miniature aloe plants. To acquire the best color and texture in the little planting, combine various succulent kinds.
Gravel should be spread out over the shell’s bottom in a 1/2-inch layer. Although the gravel helps the soil to some extent drain, the garden still needs careful irrigation to avoid becoming overwatered.

Place the shell in a warm, bright spot that receives some indirect light. Move the plants gradually into a brighter area after two weeks. Only water the soil until you can stick your finger into it and feel that it is dry.
