According to Luz Claudio, a professor of environmental medicine and public health at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai, “There are no conclusive studies to indicate that keeping indoor plants can considerably boost the air quality in the home to benefit health in a meaningful way.

Claudio has examined the studies on the advantages of indoor plants on the quality of the air. She claims that under “laboratory circumstances,” there is no doubt about the ability of plants to remove volatile chemical pollutants from the air. However, there isn’t much solid scientific evidence to support the idea that adding a few plants to your house or office will help to filter the air there.

The majority of research projects to date, including the NASA study, placed indoor plants in restricted spaces to gauge their ability to purify the air. Stanley Kays, an emeritus professor of horticulture at the University of Georgia, claims that those studies aren’t really relevant to what takes place in a home.

A 2009 study on the purifying properties of 28 various indoor plants was co-authored by Kays. While many of those plants were capable of purging the air of contaminants, the author claims that transitioning from an enclosed container to an open atmosphere drastically alters the dynamics.

Are plants a better air cleanser than filters?

How many indoor plants are required to purify the air?

Thanks to a well-known NASA study from 1989, we’ve all heard that plants can purify the air, but a more recent study by skeptic-scientists elaborated further on how many.

Technically, the report’s official title claims, “Potted plants do not improve indoor air quality, and outlines that the clean air delivery rate (CADR), a measurement also used for air purifiers, of plants is essentially a fruitless attempt to make your home a little less hostile in terms of air quality. This is due to the fact that the rate at which plants purify the air is slower than the rate at which air enters and leaves your home. Although the study is quick to discount plants’ capacity for healing, it is accurate. Pollution of all kinds, including carbon and that from cows and cars, is a problem for us.

But don’t let that stop you from purchasing one or more houseplants. Plants continue to function. The calculations of the scientists show that in order to begin making a discernible difference in the fight against indoor air pollution, you’ll need between 100 and 1,000 plants for every 10 square feet.

According to new research conducted by the University of Birmingham in collaboration with the Royal Horticultural Society, ordinary potted house plants may significantly reduce air pollution in homes and businesses (RHS).

Researchers determined that under some circumstances, typical houseplants could be able to lower nitrogen dioxide (NO2) by as much as 20% after a series of studies monitoring the plants’ exposure to this ubiquitous pollutant.

Three houseplants that are popular in UK homes, simple to care for, and reasonably priced to purchase were tested by the researchers. They included fern arum, corn plant, and peace lily (Spathiphyllum wallisii) (Zamioculcas zamiifolia).

Each plant was placed individually into a test room with NO2 concentrations corresponding to an office adjacent to a busy road.

The team estimated that all plants, regardless of species, were able to eliminate about half of the NO2 in the chamber over the course of an hour. The environment of the plants, such as whether it was in the light or the dark or if the soil was moist or dry, had no effect on how well the plants performed.

Dr. Christian Pfrang, the lead investigator, said: “Despite the fact that the plants we selected differed greatly from one another, they all had startlingly similar capacities to remove NO2 from the environment. In contrast to our past research, which found that indoor plants’ ability to absorb CO2 was greatly influenced by the time of day, whether it was night or day, and the amount of water in the soil.”

The researchers also evaluated what these findings would imply for two other sizes of offices: a small office (15 m3) and a medium office (100 m3). Five houseplants were found to reduce NO2 levels by about 20% in a small office with poor ventilation and significant levels of air pollution. Although this effect would be amplified by adding additional plants, it would be smaller in the bigger space—3.5%.

Although it is obvious how plants reduce NO2, the exact method by which they do so is yet unknown. Dr. Pfrang continued: “We don’t believe the plants are absorbing the gas in the same way they do for CO2 uptake, which involves microscopic pores in the leaves called stomata. Even throughout longer studies, there was no evidence that our plants released NO2 back into the atmosphere, indicating that there is likely a biological process going on that also involves the soil the plant is growing in, but we are not yet aware of what that process is.”

One of the study’s researchers, Dr. Tijana Blanusa, lead horticultural scientist at the RHS, said: “This supports RHS’s attempts to comprehend the scientific nuances underlying what we know to be a widespread enthusiasm. It is easier to plan and offer advice on planting combinations that not only look attractive but also perform vital environmental services when we are aware of the boundaries of what we can reasonably anticipate from plants.”

The researchers will develop sophisticated methods for modeling indoor air quality that take into account a considerably larger variety of variables in the following phase of the research. The new project, which is supported by the Met Office, will utilize portable air quality monitoring devices to locate pollutants and test their impacts in both home and commercial settings, generating a wealth of information that will be used to improve the tool.
