In the deserts of North America, cholla cactus comprise more than 20 different species of the Opuntia genus (Cactacea family). The term “cholla” is used to describe a variety of shrubby cacti belonging to this genus that have cylindrical stems made of segmented joints. These “stems” are actually modified branches that have multiple purposes, including flower production, water storage, and photosynthesis.
Chollas, like the majority of cacti, feature tubercles, which are tiny, wart-like protrusions on the stems from which sharp spines, which are actually modified leaves, sprout. The only cacti that have papery sheaths protecting their spines are chollas. These sheaths, which are frequently vivid and multicolored, give the cactus its characteristic appearance.
Even though prickly pears belong to the Opuntia genus, their branches look more like pads than cylindrical joints. Glochids, or clusters of thin, small, barbed spines, are what distinguish opuntia from other plants.
