And you may make a cool looking lily aquarium to display in your living room or kitchen entirely on your own. Here’s how to do it.
Choose the vase
The health of your fish is the most crucial factor to consider when selecting a vase. You limit the amount of space the fish has to swim if you choose a container that is too tiny. Betta fish require considerable space to swim around and do not thrive in small bowls. Fish dishes are available at several pet stores and will suffice for this purpose.
The container you choose should have a wide neck and a basin that can carry at least a quart of water. Use a glass container made of lead crystal instead, as lead crystal can seep into the water and kill your fish.
To add color to the bottom of the bowl, stack colored rocks, seashells, gravel, or glass marbles, taking care not to take up too much space. Your fish will love the extra space.
Find the perfect plant
Choose a peace lily with a well-developed root structure but isn’t overly huge. Because the roots will be dangling down into the fish bowl, they should only take up around 20% of the space to provide your fish plenty of room to swim. To allow enough air into the bowl, the lily you choose should have a smaller diameter than the aperture of the fish bowl.
Remove the lily from the pot and gently shake it to remove any excess soil from the roots. Before placing the lily in the fish bowl, rinse it under running water for a few minutes to remove all signs of soil.
What’s on top?
A cover that fits perfectly into the aperture of the fish bowl is required to effectively support the peace lily. You can use any material that can be easily cut, such as a plastic plant tray that has been trimmed down to the right size. Cutting the plastic with an X-Acto knife is simple. Make a hole in the center of the plastic large enough for the lily’s roots to dangle through.
Bettas are labyrinth fish, which means they need to breathe oxygen from the surface to exist. Add extra holes all around the tray to guarantee optimum air circulation, in addition to cutting an entrance in the center of the plastic.
After fastening the lily in the center hole, decorate the lid with a few bright stones to match those on the bowl’s bottom. Fill the bowl halfway with water, leaving several inches between the water’s top and the hole to allow for adequate air flow. To remove any chlorine that could hurt the fish, use dechlorinating drops in the water.
Pick your fish
Betta fish, often known as Siamese fighting fish, are available in a variety of vibrant hues. Select a fish that swims well, appears attentive and healthy, and isn’t too big for the container you’ve chosen.
Caring for your new pet
Change the water in the bowl at least once a week to maintain your Betta fish healthy, being sure to rinse the lily roots as well. Betta fish can consume Betta flakes, pellets, or freeze-dried blood worms twice a day. You might be able to fit the food through a hole in the lid with the use of a small funnel or straw. The Betta fish will not eat the lily’s plant material; they require regular feeding and care to remain happy and healthy.
The technique of cultivating a peace lily in a bowl with a Betta fish has caused some debate. To keep your new pet healthy, make sure your Betta fish has enough of room to swim around the roots and enough room to ascend to the surface for air.
How do you plant peace lily in a Betta bowl?
Add driftwood and water to a glass bowl to let the roots to adapt to an aquatic habitat, then place the plants on top of the driftwood with the roots in the water. The wood permits the plants’ green sections to remain above the water.
Place the bowl in a bright position or under grow lights for a few days to allow the roots to grow before adding the peace lily to the aquarium. At this stage, you can also add a liquid fertilizer to the water.

Are peace lilies poisonous to bettas?
If they are maintained in a vase without food, they will begin to pick at the roots of a peace lily plant for nutrition when they become hungry. Drooping leaves and stems are one indicator of an underwatered peace lily. When dehydrated, these plants are known to droop and swiftly rebound after being watered. However, let the soil dry out completely before watering your peace lily, since overwatering can be just as damaging as underwatering.
Leaves turning brown or yellow and becoming dry
Lack of moisture can cause underwatered peace lily leaves to turn brown or yellow. The leaves of your plants may dry out if they are left unwatered for an extended period of time. Sunburn can also be indicated by brown spots or streaks on your plants’ leaves.
How to revive underwatered peace lily plants
Recreate the moisture conditions of their original habitat to revive drooping peace lilies. Place the plants in a basin of water for at least 10 minutes if the soil is dry. If the soil has been dry for a long period, it may reject water away from its surface, preventing moisture from reaching the roots. Soaking the pot in a basin will allow the water to permeate through the soil, allowing the roots to absorb all of the necessary moisture.
Increase your watering frequency after this initial soak and keep an eye on the plants for roughly a week. Watering once a week is sufficient, but if the weather is exceptionally hot or dry, modify accordingly.
Every time you water the plants, make sure they get a good soak. Small amounts of water will just saturate the surface of the soil and will not penetrate the roots. Use enough water so that the surplus drips out of the pots’ drainage holes. Keep the plants away from heat sources and mist the foliage with a spray bottle. The plants should be revitalized and look much healthier after two or three cycles of watering and constant misting.

Aponogetons are flowering plants that can be found throughout Asia, Africa, and Australasia. Depending on how your aponogeton grows, you can identify where it came from.
It’s most likely from Asia if you find one blossoming stem. If you find numerous stems emerging from a single stalk, it’s most likely from Africa!
