How To Pollinate Anthurium

There are numerous benefits to pollinating your anthuriums, and each person will have different motivations. In an effort to comprehend the relationship between the two species that were crossed, the taxonomist may perform hybrid pollinations. Anthuriums produce flawless flowers with both male and female reproductive organs. The problem is that the female stigma is prepared for pollination before the male pistals release their pollen. In the natural world, this promotes self-pollination and ensures cross-pollination. This generates some confusion for the farmer who wants to pollinate his plants.

It is quite simple to determine whether a certain Anthurium inflorescence is ready for pollination. The stigma, which is located at the peak of each solitary flower on the spadix, will leak a drop of fluid (fig. 1). Some species place this droplet on all of their flowers at once, while others may do it in succession. This normally happens in the wee hours of the morning. In any case, the flower is “ready” to be pollinated when these droplets are present.

You will need to learn the “secret” of having pollen prepared for this important occasion. To ensure that stigmatic fluid and pollen are present at the same moment, one method is to create many clones of the same species. Although it does occasionally occur in some species, stigmatic fluid and pollen are rarely present on the same plant at the same time.

Your task becomes more challenging if a species only has one clone. It is possible to gather and store pollen from an earlier inflorescence and use it when the following inflorescence is “ripe” because many species produce more than one inflorescence in succession. To gather and preserve pollen, various techniques are utilized. When pollen is discernible on the spadix’s surface, it is suitable for collection and/or utilization. This event invariably occurs after the last trace of the stigmatic fluid has dried up and vanished. For several to several days, pollen will be discharged. If you want to store it somewhere cool and dry, you can tap it into paper envelopes or wipe it off with a brush or your finger. Only a week or two will the pollen persist. Whether or not they use a dessecant, some people store their pollen in airtight containers because they believe it will mold more easily in the refrigerator. To determine which approach best suits their species’ needs and unique horticulture preferences, a person will need to experiment with a variety of approaches.

Therefore, you are prepared to pollinate if stigmatic fluid is visible and pollen is flowing (either from a storage plant or another plant). Simply apply the pollen on the spadix and spread it all around the spadix with a brush or your finger. Repeat this as many mornings as you can or as long as you have access to liquids and pollen. Wait for the berries to form and then write your pollination information on a tag.

Depending on the species and condition of the plant, the berries typically contain one or two seeds. When berries reach the right color and size, they are considered to be ripe. When they ‘pop out’ of the spadix, you will know they are ready ( Fig. 3 ). Some species’ berries “pop out” all at once, while others do so over the course of several days as they successively ripen. These berries, complete with seeds, are prepared. Between your fingers, you can easily squeeze the berry’s seeds out. The seed should be sown right away because it quickly dessicates and loses viability. Seed storage has little value.

At the moment of seed harvest, a tiny green radicle is frequently already emerging from the seed. Most of the time, germination takes 1-3 weeks, however it might take longer in some species. Apply pollen on the enlarged spadix using a little painting paintbrush and your pollen. With multiple anthurium plants that grow at various times, the method is much simpler. Given that seed is scarce, you will likely have to source it in this way. Since cuttings and tissue culture are more prevalent, the method of anthurium multiplication via seed is not the preferred one.

After the spadix has been pollinated, the organ will gradually transform. Fruit development will take six to seven months. Fruits that are ripe protrude from the spadix, turn orange, and are rather simple to remove from the organ.

Before propagating anthurium seeds, sticky pulp that covers the seeds inside the fruits must be removed. The simplest way to do this is to repeatedly immerse the seed in liquid while whirling it to help wash the pulp out. Place the clean seeds on a piece of paper towel to dry.

What is the shelf life of anthurium pollen?

A few days before the flowers are ready for breeding, the spathe unfolds and exposes the spadix in the aroid genera Anthurium and Spathiphyllum (which have bisexual blooms). The entire spadix is covered in many, bisexual blooms that are of the same size when the spathe is unfurled. In Anthurium, fresh flowers open up every day, starting at the base of the spadix and moving progressively towards the tip over the course of two weeks (Figure 2). Stickiness to the touch and a shimmering gloss on stigmatic surfaces are signs of pistillate (female) receptivity. Sometimes, little drips of exudate are visible. More than one day may pass before flowers stop becoming responsive. In contrast, a Spathiphyllum spadix’s blooms all bloom at the same time (Figure 3).

Floral emasculation is not necessary because the stigmatic surfaces of Anthurium and Spathiphyllum both turn dry and brown before the pollen dehisces. Beginning along the spadix, anthurium pollen often appears at the bottom first before moving up to the tip (Figure 4). Because each pistillate bloom matures differently, anthurium pollen can be produced for up to two weeks. Wind does not distribute anthurium pollen. Collect the pollen on your fingertips, then gently brush it into the receptive stigmas of the female flowers (Figure 2).

Inflorescences of Spathiphyllum produce pollen throughout the course of three to four days (Figure 5). Using a brush is recommended since Spathiphyllum pollen is lighter and more likely to be distributed by air currents. Gently tap the Spathiphyllum inflorescence over a container before attempting to pollinate it, catching the pollen as it falls. Use a delicate brush to apply subsequent transfers.

Anthuriums self-pollinate, right?

You must save pollen from the first inflorescence of your anthurium in order to use it on the subsequent one if you want your plant to self-pollinate.

Your best option for storing your pollen is to freeze it so that it stays as fresh as possible. This can be accomplished by directly applying fresh pollen to a piece of aluminum foil using a paintbrush.

When you’re through, fold it over, label it with the date, and put the entire thing—along with the paintbrush—into a zip-top bag. Trust me, your future self will thank you for this.

I also prefer to add some silica beads to the zip-top bag before freezing it to help remove any moisture that could otherwise cause the pollen to spoil. Inside those tiny sachets you receive with online clothing orders—you know, the ones that scream “throw away, do not eat”—you can find your very own silica beads.

Once a day for a few weeks until the pollen stops, I typically collect it and put the bag back in the freezer.

Pollen can remain active after being frozen for a few months to a year or so.

You can self-pollinate the same plant using stored pollen and the same paintbrush after the next inflorescence has emerged and entered the receptive phase.

How can one tell if anthurium pollination was successful?

When your inflorescence begins to produce some green bumpy material along the spadix, you can kind of tell that the pollen has been successfully transferred to it. Although certain species tend to exaggerate even when not pollinated, it will typically appear protruded.

Anthuriums reproduce in what ways?

The brightly colored “flower” is actually a modified leaf, or spathe, and its small blossoms are all over the yellow spadix that rises above the spathe. Anthuriums can be multiplied by division, cuts, or, less frequently, by sprouting their seeds.

How do you split an anthurium?

Root propagation is the simplest method of anthurium reproduction. In fact, as long as each piece of your anthurium has a sound root system, you can divide it into as many plants as you choose. For the best results, divide up an overflowing pot in the early spring. Cut each segment apart with a sterile knife or pair of pruning shears, being careful to keep the fleshy roots and growing points.

Your divided plants should be placed in a peat-based potting mixture, kept in moderate light, and kept at or above 70 degrees Fahrenheit.

Can male pollen be preserved?

Pollen viability is fatally endangered by moisture. Because of this, many breeders decide to add flour to their pollen at a 4:1 ratio when storing it for an extended period of time. This extra step will aid in extending the time that pollen remains dry.

How can pollen be extracted from flowers?

The most varied class of allergen products used in clinical practice are pollen extracts made in the United States from more than 300 plant species. Human allergies are caused by common trees and grasses (Table 29-1), as well as weeds (i.e., invasive, undesirable plants that are neither trees nor grasses). The inventory of pollen source materials for allergen extracts is a crucial resource for manufacturers because pollen collection for extract synthesis is a very seasonal activity.

Pollen source materials can be gathered in the field using vacuum collection, in a greenhouse using water setting, or in the lab using flower heads that have been cut, dried, ground, and sieved. The most effective technique is vacuum collection, which is frequently employed during pollination in cultivated fields or pure stands. Just before pollination, the plant’s freshly cut stems and flowers are submerged in water in a greenhouse for water setting. The plant pollinates the collected paper that surrounds the plants for days. Last but not least, mature flowering plant heads can be harvested immediately before pollination. To release the pollen, the blooming heads are dried and ground. The pollen grains are separated through a process of sifting plant components through several kinds of sieves.

Plant parts are often not allowed to contaminate more than 1% of vacuum collection or water settings. The process of cutting, drying, grinding, and sieving mature blooming heads, in contrast, results in pollens that are up to 10% contaminated with plant parts and may call for extra separation procedures. The pollen may need to be further sieved, floated in perchloroethylene, or separated using centrifugal force. Before extraction, each lot of pollen has its identity and purity examined under a microscope.

For more than ten years, dried pollens kept at temperatures below zero degrees Celsius retain their allergenic properties (R.E.E., Greer Laboratories, Inc., unpublished data, 2012). Pollens contain different amounts of allergens depending on where and when they were gathered (Table 29-2). Manufacturers may blend lots from different locations and collection years in order to reduce the variability of allergen content in the final allergen extracts.
