Try adding extra terrarium moss instead of charcoal if you’re not keen on that. In any case, moss naturally filters water and is capable of removing contaminants like arsenic.
How may charcoal be used in a terrarium?
- Take a clear, spotless glass jar as your base. If the opening is big enough for you to reach inside, it will be simpler to add the plants, but you can construct a basic tool to fit smaller gaps.

- Create holes in the potting soil for the plants using a spoon or your fingers. To build a tamping tool, attach a cork to the end of a skewer or chopstick. Use it to gently compact the soil around the plants.
- Use a little, dry paintbrush to scrub away any dirt that may have gotten on the glass.
- For a finished effect, use extra pebbles or sea glass around the plants or add another layer of moss. Use a small watering can or spray bottle to lightly water. Don’t water your plants so much that the bottom becomes flooded.
- If wanted, decorate your terrarium with miniature tools, shells, or other items. Toys for young children, such as plastic dinos, can be used to create a fun “prehistoric jungle terrarium”.
