Hello! Thank you for coming! I’m going to demonstrate how to root plant cuttings in water for you today. This is a fantastic approach to increase the number of your plants and spread your love of plants to friends. I will admit that it can be challenging to give away a plant that you have nurtured from the very beginning. But seeing improvements is so exciting and satisfying! I recently donated two cuttings of Chain of Hearts to households that are really fantastic. I’m eager to follow their development.
I used to work at a golf course with a 30 foot Monstera deliciosa when I was in my early 20s. 30 feet—you read that right! I developed a liking for flora because of that. If you didn’t already know, it’s actually my all-time favorite plant. Regardless, some of the leaves were 2 feet broad and breathtaking! One day, I noticed a tiny leaf emerge from the ground, and when no one was watching, I removed the dirt from the stem’s bright green color and pulled the leaf out. I kept checking behind me as if I were ready to commit a bank heist or something. Actually, I suppose that it was theft. But that’s not how I saw it. I was sharing the good vibes! But let’s be really clear: IF YOU DO IT AT A STORE, IT IS STEALING, so don’t do that! My supervisor finally heard me out (it was weighing heavily on my conscience), and he laughed, called me silly, and said it was absolutely fine! All of this to say, I brought it home, planted it in water, and it grew, making me very pleased! I was in awe of this incredible replication technique. Let’s discuss how to water-root plant cuttings.
The majority of common house plants can be propagated using water. Currently, I’m focusing on a tiny little stem from my large Fiddle Leaf Fig. There are no roots yet, but there is a small leaf of green!! Try it if you’re not sure.
Let’s get started
- Choose the spot on the main plant where you will cut your cutting. Finding the root node on your plant is important since not all cuttings that will root in water have them, but the majority of them do.
- Make a clean, precise cut immediately below the node with a knife or pair of scissors. 1/4 or so below the node.
- Set the cutting inside a spotless glass. Pour enough room-temperature water over the cutting nodes to cover them.
- Every 3-5 days, replace the water with brand-new, room-temperature water.
- Keep an eye on your roots as they expand! Depending on the plant, this could take weeks or even months.
- When your roots are around 3-5 inches long, it’s time to plant the cutting in soil!

Your rooted plants should be placed in a location with strong indirect light. Additionally, you’ll need patience—serious patience! It’s not necessarily bad news if you are attempting a fresh cutting and two weeks pass without any roots. Someone I know submerged a fiddle leaf fig leaf in water, and three months later, she noticed roots.
Make careful to clean and lightly rub the roots with your fingertips after changing the water. Before putting the roots in the fresh water, you should wipe off any mucky film (that’s the precise phrase).
You only have to do that! It’s really easy. You can now create your own plants and exchange them with pals. It’s one of my favorite activities. Can you grow indoor plants in water?
Although propagation is not always effective on the first few attempts, we advise you to start because it is satisfying when it does! You can do this.
Many plants can be grown in potting soil, but some can also be propagated in water. This is due to the fact that they have developed in conditions that make it possible. The majority of Aroid plants, such as pothos, philodendrons, monsteras, and ZZ plants, may be propagated in water. Being able to adapt to flooding circumstances while continuing to grow was essential for these plants’ survival because their parent, which they descended from, resided in swamps. Because of this, the descendants of that ancestor can also grow in water. They are still land plants, though, and will thrive long-term if planted in soil. Put the “pro” in propagation by following the simple procedures listed below.
How long can a plant be propagated in water?
Before the cuttings are completely rooted, make sure to add new water as necessary. Most plants will begin to root in 3–4 weeks, but others can take longer. The cutting is prepared for potting when the roots are at least 1-2 inches long.
What plants can have their cuttings rooted in water?
In the realm of indoor plants, I am the crazy cat woman. They are all over my house. As you weave amongst specimens clamoring for light, closing the drapes has become quite a challenge. I nevertheless keep taking cuttings.
Many indoor plants can quickly take root in water. I enjoy watching roots develop, especially in the winter when there is something very cheery about a life that is so willing. Actually, the best times to take cuttings are in the spring and summer. Additionally, because water doesn’t provide the most nutrient-rich start, cuttings taken in water are not as good as those taken in soil. However, it doesn’t deter me.
Among the plants that will quickly take root in water are philodendrons, begonias, tradescantia, pilea, peperomias, ctenanthe (but regrettably not calathea), and rhipsalis.
Cuttings should typically be between 10 and 15 cm long; longer cuttings may grow, but the ratio of stem to root frequently results in a weak plant. Cut immediately below the node, or the point where a leaf joins the stem, with a sharp knife or secateurs. A portion of stem left below the node will probably rot off if you leave it there.
You might need to remove a few more leaves in addition to the lowest one, leaving only the top two or three. Basically, any area of the cutting that is submerged in water needs to be devoid of rotting leaves. It is not a good idea to begin life in fetid water.
Remove any blossoms as well so the cutting doesn’t produce seeds, which would waste energy that would be better used to establish roots. Additionally, the blossoms could decay and develop mold.
For robbing, small vases, water bottles, or milk jugs work best. To prevent the cutting from falling into the water if the neck is wide, you might need to make some form of mesh across the top. Additionally, you can group numerous cuttings into a single container.
Select a smaller container than you would anticipate. A large amount of water will dilute the hormones that the cutting releases into the water to promote rooting, lengthening the process.
Most begonias and pileas take three to four weeks to begin to root, but some of them do. Be patient and keep the cuttings warm and bright. Take away a particular stem in a batch of cuttings if it becomes soft and begins to decay before it contaminates the others. The cutting is prepared for potting when there are numerous roots that are 2–5 cm long.
Keep the compost damp but not soggy until you notice new growth by planting into pre-moistened potting compost in an appropriately sized container with drainage. It could be a good idea to clip the cutting back slightly when potting it up if it grew in water and numerous other places. As a result, the plant will grow bushier and new growth will be forced at the root.
Can cuttings be thrown directly into water?
Even if you already know how to root a plant in water, David Clark, a professional gardener, has some excellent advice that will help you make the procedure more effective.
He offers advice on two simple plant-starting techniques that you might not have known about.
Two practical workshops on plant propagation were recently presented by Clark at the Buffalo and Erie County Botanical Gardens.
He provided a plethora of knowledge, including these five excellent suggestions:
1. Build a miniature greenhouse. How frequently have you purchased comforters or bedding that was packaged in a plastic zipper bag? I frequently do so, and I usually consider, “This bag ought to be useful for something.
According to Clark, these bags make excellent miniature greenhouses for newly transplanted or rooted plants. Simply place the plant inside the bag and partially zip it up. This will assist in retaining moisture. In addition, a small aperture permits airflow to stop the development of mold.
“Because the plant needs to be confined, unless you have a greenhouse, Clark explained, I almost always root with a bag.
The bedding bags, as shown in the picture at the top of the article, can hold either a sizable plant or a number of smaller plants.
2. Use powders for rooting. By soaking a plant cutting in water, you can multiply plants in one of the easiest ways possible. Trim the stem horizontally above a node (see photo above). Soft, fleshy plants like the Wandering Jew, ivy, arrowhead plant, and spider plant respond nicely to this technique.
Using rooting products will boost your chances of success, according to Clark. There are numerous commercial goods available. These products contain a growth hormone to hasten the emergence of roots and destroy bacteria and fungi to stop the stem from decaying.
Dip your stem into the powder after dispensing a tiny bit of it. (Avoid inserting the stem into the product container directly.) Give the stem a minute to settle. The powder will be absorbed by the plant. Put the cutting’s tip in water; the water won’t completely wash the powder away.
He added that you can also utilize common home items to speed up roots. Cinnamon can be used to eliminate fungus and bacteria on plant stems. Make a rooting solution by dissolving one aspirin in water to encourage the formation of roots.
3. Give your new plant enough time to adjust to soil after being in water. According to Clark, if you root your cutting in water, it will grow roots that are best adapted to obtain its nutrients from water as opposed to soil. The plant could become stressed if it is transferred from water to soil right away.
As an alternative, mix a little dirt into the water you’re using to root your cutting. Do this gradually over the course of four or five weeks to allow your plant adjust to its new growing environment.
4. Learn about leaf section division. You may grow new plants from the leaves of succulents like the sansevieria pictured above. It’s not even necessary to utilize the full leaf; only a portion will do!
When you cut the leaf, Clark advised, be sure to mark which portion is the top and which is the bottom. As shown in the leftmost photo below, place the bottom portion of the leaf segment into a tray of moist perlite. (Fun fact: Perlite is a byproduct of volcanoes.)
5. Encourage plant runners as a means of division.
View the image of the Wandering Jew that is located close to the beginning of this article. Burying the stem horizontally is another approach to multiply such a plant. These nodes will produce new plants.

Which plants can’t be spread?
Asexual propagation is ineffective for some plants, including papaya, marigold, chilli, capsicum, tomato, and others. It is the only way to produce plant genetic variety. Only through this process can new decorative and vegetable crop varieties and cultivars be created.
Why don’t my cuttings in water root?
Your cuttings do not need to be left out for them to callus. especially when trying to establish roots in water.
When you make your cut, snip just below a node (where a leaf will likely sprout), then take out that leaf and possibly the one after that. Put that bare stem right into the water.
Your cuttings may be overly lengthy, which makes it harder for the plant to focus its energy on developing new roots rather than maintaining all of that vital tissue.
Sometimes I’d change the water. Despite being buried in water, the roots still need oxygen to grow.
Can plants thrive in water alone?
The biggest issue for plants growing in water is oxygen. The oxygen that is dissolved in the water must be drawn out by plants that can thrive in it. Without the additional oxygen that the soil pore spaces give, many other plants cannot survive.
How can one speed up underwater germination?
I knew that willow could be used as a natural rooting hormone, but I had no idea that Pothos also possessed this “super power.” Simply add a Pothos cutting to the water with your slow-growing cuttings to accelerate root growth. I heartily agree with that. Although my Pothos aren’t too happy I learned about this, what a great reason to get more Pothos!
I initially learned about this from Everything Plants on YouTube about a month ago, and when I saw Soil Scientist Ashley from Gardening in Canada mention it, I knew I had to give it a try. Their videos are included below.
Water Propagation
Given that your plant cutting will eventually develop in soil, why would you choose to water propagate it? mainly because we like the view! You have your own tiny window into the world of root systems when you propagate a cutting in water. As a visual reference to comprehending your plant’s anatomy, this is very gratifying for novice plant parents. Knowing the size and shape of your roots can assist you understand what is happening underneath when your plant reaches the earth.
Here are 5 tips for successful water propagation:
1. Depending on the type of plant, we advise waiting anywhere from an hour (tropical varieties) to several days (cactus and succulent types) before putting it in water. This gives the plants time to callus over after being cut. This action will lessen the possibility of stem rot.
2. Due to its abundance of naturally occurring rooting hormones, fresh aloe is the ideal choice for propagations of all kinds. Simply cut a piece of fresh aloe, insert it into the fillet, and spin it around to absorb the plant’s medicinal properties. Your plant is now infected and prepared to begin rooted using your preferred method of propagation.
3. Pick the appropriate boat! We’ve found that cuttings, particularly those with more woody branches like ficus elastica, benefit from being placed in vessels of a darker color, such wine bottles, as this encourages the development of stronger roots. Aroid species like monstera or pothos are excellent in clear glass containers because their roots are frequently more exposed to light in their natural habitat.
Make sure your propagations receive enough light so they can maintain their strength while they develop new roots. To prevent burning, we advise them to minimize exposure to hot, direct sunlight (such as that during the summer). In general, you want to wait until plants’ roots are a few inches long before putting them in soil and keeping them in bright light or under a grow lamp.
4.Replace your propagation water frequently to ensure strong root growth. We advise changing the water roughly once per week. Use the chance each time you replace the water to give any of your thirsty plants a drink in order to complete the cycle.
