I reasoned that having frogs overtake your home would be much more annoying than having gnats overrun it.
Naturally, if I hadn’t been dozing off in biology class all those years ago, I would have known that a nematode is a little roundworm. Due to some unpleasant ones that can enter the digestive systems of humans, dogs, and other animals, roundworms have a poor reputation.
I had no idea that there were also beneficial roundworms, though. Particularly, tiny microscopic roundworms that, when introduced to soil, settle in and begin chewing away at insect larvae (including gnat larvae) while posing no threat to people, dogs, or children. Farmers have utilized beneficial nematodes as a reliable alternative to pesticides and chemicals for years to control pests.
(Having said that, kudos to Gardener’s Supply Company’s marketing team for referring to them as “useful nematodes” rather than “parasitic roundworms”).

In terms of preventing gnats, this was fairly helpful. However, when I removed the cover, at least 2-3 additional types of creepy crawling critters decided they loved the moist, gloomy atmosphere. They must have spent the entire time sitting in the ground, I assume. Hopefully the little guys can devour both the fungus gnat larvae and their offspring.
Anyhow, I added extra water after adding the nematode concentration to each pot that I could. My small companions were at work since the soil sort of “glistened” when I looked at it carefully. Now, I initially thought I would find the idea of having those small things in my home a little repulsive, but in the end I’ve learned to enjoy them. They are cleaning my house like tens of thousands of tiny pals. They are also secure around you, your children, and your pets.
Not a single gnat has flown into my face in the past few days. And so, in appreciation for Gardener’s Supply Company, I will gladly recommend this item.
