I’m hoping you can help me figure out what’s wrong with my sick African violets. All of them were doing well until abruptly, last winter, 90% of them began to experience something at the crown. No leaves already present died, however after a few months no new leaves started to appear; those that did are distorted and densely clustered. The only thing I could find when I searched online was crown rot, although none of the leaves actually died. Help!
A: Thankfully, I haven’t personally encountered this issue. Sally’s description, the photographs that go with it, and a few trustworthy sources lead me to assume that she has cyclamen mites. Cyclamen mites resemble spider mites in appearance, although they are much smaller, more difficult to spot even when enlarged, and do not build webs.

- The most unique method of cyclamen mite therapy did not specifically target African violets. The infected plants must be submerged in warm (110 degree) water for 15 to 30 minutes as part of the treatment. The temperature must be held constant the entire time, and all components of the plants and pots must remain immersed.
What can eradicate cyclamen mites?
Cyclamen mites can be killed without hurting most plants by submerging afflicted plants (pot and all) in water that has been heated to 43C for 15 minutes. If chemical treatment is preferred, thoroughly saturate or submerge the plant in a miticide.
How can I tell whether the African violets in my garden have mites?
Mites are more closely related to spiders than they are to insects, according to cyclamen mites. The entire plant or simply the center could perish if ignored. Some symptoms will persist even after infestations are under control. Time and gentle pruning of deformed leaves are necessary for the plant to restore to its usual appearance.
Plants should be spaced apart to avoid touching, as this will stop the cyclamen mites from spreading. Additionally, take care to avoid touching infected plants before working with uninfected ones. Keep infected plants apart. Poorly infested plants ought to be thrown away. Reusing plant pots requires first thoroughly cleaning them and then soaking them for 30 minutes in a solution of 1 part household bleach to 9 parts water.
Spray a miticide that is intended for use on houseplants on precious plants. When it’s mild outdoors, take the plant outside and spray it with insecticidal soap, products containing sulfur, or tau-fluvalinate. For mite management, it could be necessary to apply two or three sprays at three-day intervals. Examples of brands and goods can be found in Table 1. For product use and safety, always abide by the label’s instructions.
Mealybugs: A variety of mealybug species attack African violets as pests. They consist of the Comstock mealybug and the citrus mealybug (Planococcus citri) (Pseudococcus comstocki). Mealybugs have a length of around 1/4 inch. Their soft bodies are covered in a white waxy substance that gives them a cottony appearance. They can be found on stems, leaf crotches, and leaves. Their food source is sap from plants. Their feeding results in leaves that are stunted and deformed. Plant and leaf death might result from severe infestation. The control of severe infestations is more challenging. The mealybugs’ waxy covering shields the adults from pesticides. However, young nymphs are vulnerable. The least hazardous insecticides to use on houseplants are insecticidal soap or pyrethrins, but sprays containing acetamiprid, cyfluthrin, or imidacloprid will also eliminate mealybugs. Spray the plant outside when the weather is nice. It may be necessary to apply two or three sprays at three-day intervals. Mealybugs can also be controlled with soil-applied pesticide granules containing imidacloprid. Examples of companies and goods with these active components are included in Table 1. Mites are pests that feed on sap and harm a variety of greenhouse plants. The cyclamen mite and the two-spotted spider mite are two species that can be extremely problematic. Both of these mites obtain their food by using their mouthparts to pierce tissue and sucking out the cell contents. While the majority of greenhouse managers are familiar with the two-spotted spider mite and know how to control it, the cyclamen mite is still a mystery to many of them. The biology and management of cyclamen mites are covered in this fact sheet.
Damage
Cyclamen mites frequently go undetected until the damage is severe due to their small size. The form of the damage is typically what alerts greenhouse managers to cyclamen mite infestations, not the mites themselves. Cyclamen mite infestations can affect the entire plant or just the buds, depending on the type of plant that was attacked. Infested foliage may darken and appear streaked and blotchy, and deformed leaves frequently curl inward. Purple patches on injured foliage may be visible. Very tiny, six- or eight-legged mites with a white, green, or pale orange coloration work around the base of the plants, in the buds, or on the wounded portions of the leaves. These mites may complete their life cycle in about two weeks and prefer temperatures of around 60F.
Cyclamen mites can cause significant damage to a variety of plants, including African violets, cyclamen, dahlia, gloxinia, snapdragon, geranium, chrysanthemum, larkspur, begonia, fuchsia, petunia, and New Guinea impatiens. However, cyclamen suffers the most damage of any plant. Outside, this mite is a problem for strawberries as well. This species was first identified as an imported one in New York in 1898. It is currently widely dispersed in greenhouses around the nation.
Biology
Cyclamen mites have eight legs, are tiny, oval, translucent, orange-pink, and shiny. Without magnification, they are invisible since they are just around 1/100 inch long. In contrast to the male’s pincer-like rear legs, the female’s are threadlike. The cyclamen plant’s base is where the eggs are laid, along the midribs of the unfolding leaves, in damaged leaf areas, and on strawberries. Management
To keep this insect from spreading throughout the greenhouse, much care must be taken. During greenhouse inspections, always check infested benches and other hot locations for signs of mite infestation last because mites can be easily transferred from infested to noninfested plants on hands and clothing. Plants with parasites can be treated by submerging them in water heated to 110°F for 15 to 30 minutes. When possible, severely damaged plant sections should be removed before dipping. The infected plant is submerged in the water, pot and everything. Careful temperature management of the water is essential to the treatment’s success.
Often, it is preferable to throw away infected plants rather than try to use pesticides to control the issue. If chemical control is used, quarantine the affected plants to prevent the mites from potentially spreading. After cutting back the growth, spraying the plants with insecticidal soap can offer efficient control. Insecticidal soap should be applied three to four times, spaced three to five days apart. Wetting agents are not required. Applying directly to the lower and top leaf surfaces Before taking cuttings, sensitive plant stocks should be treated, and infected plants should be removed and destroyed as away.
Commercially accessible mite predators come in a variety of species. These are often sprinkled equally throughout the greenhouse when mites first start to develop. Consider spraying with an insecticidal soap before releasing predator mites if there are significant mite infestations. The right predatory mite species will be chosen based on the greenhouse’s humidity and temperature. Azadirachtin, a chemical derived from the latin name of the tree itself, is one of the principal ingredients of neem oil, although it also contains other potent substances. Neem Oil functions as a pesticide in two ways:
- When insects come into contact with it or consume it, it acts as an anti-feedant. Neem Oil application can be improved by using a surfactant (spreader/sticker) to boost spray coverage.
- For the insects it affects, neem acts as a growth regulator and hormone disruptor. This characteristic prevents the usual hormone releases that cause growth and maturity, which obstructs the insect’s natural development.
Neem oil performs a variety of other tasks as well, including fungicide and bactericide. It also kills plant parasitic nematodes while coexisting with beneficial nematodes.
The seeds of the Azadirachta indica (Indian Neem Tree), which is indigenous to India and other Southeast Asian countries, are used to make neem oil. This thriving tree’s fruit is collected, and the seeds are sold to factories where the oil is extracted and the leftovers are sold as “neem cake” or “neem seed meal” for use as nematicide and organic fertilizer.
