Marantas prefer indirect sunshine but require intense light. The colors in the leaves will shine more brightly under bright light, but direct sunlight will burn the foliage. A low, spreading plant known as a maranta will spread out horizontally across a surface. You don’t need to worry about replacing the pot because it grows slowly.
Marantas prefer an environment that is consistently between 18 to 23 degrees, although they do not fare well in drafts or with abrupt temperature changes.
Keep the soil moist and prevent it from drying out. at least once per week, drink water.
Although the Maranta plants occasionally produce flowers, their true beauty is in the color and pattern of their leaves. If you notice blooms developing, remove them before they bloom to urge your plant to concentrate its energy on developing large, vibrant leaves. The flowers require a lot of energy for the plant to create.
The Maranta plant is known as the “Prayer Plant” because its leaves appear to be moving in prayerfully downward during the day and upward at night.
One of the first plants I ever owned was a maranta, or prayer plant. In addition to how simple it is to maintain, I appreciate how strikingly pink the leaves are.
The way the leaves move on a regular basis creeped me out a little when I initially purchased a Maranta. Is a Maranta’s flowering unusual?

If your Prayer Plant blooms profusely, it means you’ve taken excellent care of it and it’s happy, healthy, and happy to bloom for you.
Red Marantas do they bloom?

What should I do to make my prayer plant bloom?
Although many internet sources refer to them as rare, I can personally attest that they are not. Like anything else, this depends on your ability to give your plant the best possible environment.
In a previous residence, I previously had a prayer plant that produced blooms on a regular basis all year long.
It inhabited a cozy bathroom in front of a window facing north that let in bright, filtered light.
It didn’t even get any extra care; it was only watered with regular tap water. However, read my section on water quality later in this piece because it can have a significant long-term impact on your plant.
How to get a prayer plant to flower
Blooming will be aided by providing favorable conditions that are comparable to those found in their natural habitat. A basic refresher of how to care for prayer plants is provided below:
LIGHT
As plants that live on rainforest floors, prayer plants grow best in a window that has bright light but is not directly in the sun. They won’t be harmed by a little inside direct sunlight, but they dislike a lot of it.
Your plant will develop more slowly and most likely won’t blossom if it is in an area that is too gloomy. Any flowering plant needs enough light to encourage the development of flowers.
TEMPERATURE
For these plants, it’s critical to maintain consistently warm temperatures. They cannot stand extreme cold or chilly drafts.
Make sure your plant isn’t situated anywhere where it might be exposed to chilly drafts caused by doors or vents opening and closing in the winter. They like it when it’s warm all the time.
HUMIDITY
High humidity will be beneficial to some plants. It would be best if you could place them in a bathroom because bathrooms are usually more humid.
If not, spend your money on a top-notch humidifier to give them the best chance of being content in your house.
WATERING
Never let the soil entirely dry out since you will immediately have an abundance of curled and discolored leaves. The topic of prayer plant leaves that are curling and becoming brown is covered in a another blog post of mine.
Before watering again, let the top inch of soil dry out no more than about half an inch.
FERTILIZING
During times of aggressive growth, be sure to fertilize frequently. Most of my plants prefer Dyna-Gro Grow, and I like to use it. It is a comprehensive fertilizer that is urea-free and contains all the micro and macronutrients required for plants to thrive.
WATER QUALITY
Due to fluoride and other contaminants in tap water, maranta plants dislike it and may eventually grow brown tips. If you can, use distilled water or rainwater. (Please note that leaving your soil too dry is another major reason why leaves develop brown edges.)
Hard water can also create mineral deposits on leaves when it rains on vegetation.
Should i cut prayer plant flowers off?
It’s usually best to remove the flower spikes if your prayer plant has blossomed and you’re content with admiring the (insignificant) floral display.
Simply put, this will enable your plant to focus its energy on leaf growth rather than blossom creation.
However, if you wait for the blossoms to open, your plant won’t necessarily suffer. After blooming is finished, I would simply make sure to remove any spent flowers and flower stalks to keep your plant looking neater.
Do prayer plants need to bloom?
The Prayer Plant got its name from the way its leaves fold at night, resembling closed hands in prayer. In the early morning light, its leaves spread out and occasionally rustle. Amazing, huh?
Showy, oval-shaped leaves are frequently scarlet underside and have a stunning light-and-dark green feathery design with red veins. The length of its leaves reaches around 5 in. (12 cm).
Although they rarely flower inside, prayer plants occasionally produce little, white tubular blooms on long stems. In any case, the flowers are unimportant. The main draw, though, is the spectacular foliage.
There are a few variants with names. The one shown above, “Erythroneura,” is one of the most well-known. Because of the pattern of its prominent red leaf veins and its dark-green and yellow-green leaves, it is frequently referred to as the herringbone plant. It may be sold under the name “Tricolor.” With its silver veins and black-green leaves, “Massangeana” is extremely remarkable.
Should Marantas be misted?
From spring to autumn, it’s best to keep the soil somewhat moist but not drenched in water. As marantas are sensitive to the toxins in tap water, use tepid distilled water, filtered water, or rainwater. Verify that any extra water has been drained. Wintertime irrigation is reduced, keeping the soil slightly damp. Marantas thrive in a moist environment, so spritz the leaves every day with lukewarm water or place them on a pebble tray filled with water. Feed your plants with a balanced fertilizer every few months. Periodically wipe the leaves to remove dust.
How to propagate a maranta
A maranta can be multiplied most effectively by division. When you repot it in the spring, use your fingers to gently pry apart the rootball; you should see that a clump at the side naturally falls away. Verify that a portion of the root system exists in each clump. Repot both plants in pots that are only a tiny bit bigger than the new rootballs of fresh compost. If a clump won’t break free spontaneously, use a clean, sharp knife to slice through the rootball.
Stem cuttings can also be used to grow marantas. Remove a stem from the main plant with a sharp knife or secateurs, making sure it has a node. After letting the wound heal for a few hours, place the cutting in water or a small pot of compost and wait for roots to form, which can take several weeks.
Growing maranta: problem solving
Curled-in leaves are an indication of underwatering, but they will soon uncurl after you have hydrated the plant. Make sure to drain any extra water afterward.
Overwatering may also be the reason why leaves are yellowing or wilting. When marantas are left in wet compost, the roots rot, causing the plant to suffer (you may notice that the base of the plant is blackened). Before watering it once more, let the compost dry completely and allow any extra water to drain.
Sunburn could be the source of brown patches. Remove your plant from the sun’s direct rays.
If the plant’s leaves are fading, it is receiving too much light; transfer it to a shadier location.
Leaf spot is what causes the brown stains on the leaves. When watering, avoid sprinkling the foliage and stay away from the faucet.
Dry air might result in brown margins on the leaves or brown tips. To increase humidity around the plant, spray it or place it on a tray of wet stones. Additionally, you might have overfed the plant or used hard water to water it.
Marantas may be impacted by red spider mite. Fine webbing will cover the plant’s leaves and stems, and the upper surface of the leaf will start to mottle. With a magnifying glass and close inspection, you may find mites and eggs on the undersides of the leaves. Improved airflow increases humidity. Use sprays with fatty acids or plant oils as an alternative.
Marantas are they self-pollinating?
Self pollen, which is found on top of the style, is deposited on the pollinator during this fast rolling motion, whereas cross pollen is scooped into the stigmatic cavity from the pollinator.
Fertilizer
Prayer plants need to be fed every two weeks from spring through fall while they are actively developing. Utilize a premium water-soluble indoor plant food. Less fertilizer should be applied throughout the winter as growth is not encouraged.
Repotting
Your prayer plant shouldn’t require frequent repotting. It will, however, grow considerably more slowly after it is rooted-bound in its container.
If you decide to repot, pick a pot that is 1-2 broader than the current pot. Simply take it out of the existing pot and place it in the new one along with some extra soil mixture. Your prayer plant will grow quickly and easily if you water it well.
Pruning
You can prune your prayer plant to promote more ferocious growth. Cut the stems just above a leaf node with a pair of garden shears that have been sanitized.
In response, the prayer plant will produce fresh branches just below the incision, giving it a bushier appearance!
Propagation
Considering how difficult they can be to grow, prayer plants are surprisingly simple to propagate!
Making a stem cutting beneath a leaf node is all that is required. Place the cutting in a glass of water after being dipped in a rooting hormone, and be sure to change the water around every two days.
You may also place the cutting straight into the potting soil; just be sure you regularly wet your prayer plant and keep the soil damp.
Why does my prayer plant twitch in the dark?

As a result, plant leaves will droop or spread out during the day to absorb moisture or catch rain. By folding the leaves inward at night, this adaptive habit helps the plant retain water so that any water droplets can be kept as they trickle down to the plant rather than evaporating.
Another idea contends that the ability of the plant to fold inward at night is an evolutionary characteristic that improves its capacity for effective survival. In particular, it aids in keeping the plant compactly safe from predators. Although there are hypotheses to the contrary, such as the idea that the movement of the leaves may make the plant more vulnerable to predators because birds flying overhead would be more likely to notice moving leaves in prayer plants than their motionless counterparts.
The prayer plant movement may have numerous objectives, therefore relying just on one ideology may not be the solution. In order to promote survival, some further potential uses include enhancing plant temperature regulation and preventing insects from eating on foliage.
