2 to 4 hours after watering, the soil should still be moist. The soil should then feel damp to the touch and get darker, which typically lasts for more than 24 hours.

How long does it take for the soil in house plants to dry out?
Depending on the technique of drying employed, overwatered soil typically dries in 1-3 days. These techniques, which make advantage of the sun’s rays and the wind, have been shown to work well for drying out overwatered soil.

Why does the soil in my houseplant remain wet?
There are numerous reasons why soil may take a while to dry up, but they are all related to drainage problems, water loss from transpiration or evaporation, or a plant’s reduced water use. The key factors that can lengthen the time it takes for your soil to dry out are as follows.
Low Light
Low light levels cause plants to require far less water, which causes their soil to stay moist for a longer period of time after watering. If you keep your plants in low light, a lot of the water you put to the soil will go unused for a while if the plant doesn’t need it.
Your plants will begin to develop much more quickly and the time it takes for the soil to dry up will significantly decrease if you move them to a more sunny spot. Due to how simple it is to overwater indoor plants in low light conditions, this is one of the most frequent causes of plant death.
Low Temperatures
Low temperatures cause less water in the soil to evaporate, which slows down how quickly the soil dries out. Additionally, it causes your plants’ transpiration and growth rate to slow down, which lowers their water needs.
In order to ensure that my indoor plants are not subjected to temperature extremes, I normally like to keep an eye on the temperature in the rooms where I cultivate them. I have a decent sense of whether temperature changes are causing any problems because I use a digital thermometer that tracks the minimum, maximum, and current temperature. Large temperature swings can be brought on by drafty windows or drafts from heating or cooling systems.
Low temperatures can stress your plants or even physically harm them, which will significantly lessen their capacity to use the water in the soil in addition to reducing evaporation.
Poor Ventilation
Reduced airflow around your plants slows down evaporation and transpiration, which causes the soil to dry out more slowly. Simply opening a window or installing a fan can improve ventilation, speed up soil drying, and lower the likelihood of overwatering issues.
Poorly Draining Soil
If you see water collecting on the soil’s surface after watering or taking a while to drain from the drainage holes, the soil is probably not draining effectively enough. Many pre-made houseplant soil mixtures are excellent at holding onto water but have a tendency to drain poorly, which can lead to the soil taking a long time to dry out after watering.
To improve drainage and hasten soil drying, inorganic additions like perlite or pumice can be added to potting soil for indoor plants. The problem of the soil not drying up soon enough is primarily avoided by these components, which increase soil aeration, speed up water drainage, and decrease the soil’s overall water-holding capacity.

Pots With Few Or No Drainage Holes
In containers without drainage holes, all water given to the soil is retained until it is either absorbed by the plant or evaporates. This may cause the soil to remain damp for an extended amount of time. Healthy indoor plants cannot be grown in containers without drainage holes. Yes, it is possible, but it demands close attention to detail and has a little margin for mistake.
Picking a pot with lots of drainage holes at the bottom of the pot is much preferable. Avoid using pots with drainage holes that are not directly at the bottom since these can cause water to collect in the pot’s bottom inch or so.
Some pots, like the ones on the left in the illustration below, just have drainage holes that are too small and won’t really aid in soil drainage. If using plastic pots, try to get ones with many of drainage holes.
Excessively Large Pots
Unbelievably, this is a frequent problem that many individuals don’t even recognize as such. Large pots hold a lot more water since they have a larger amount of soil than smaller pots. The soil will take a while to dry out unless you are growing equally enormous plants that can use that much water.
Choose containers that are roughly the same size as your plants. While giving your plants some room to expand is a good idea, too much space can actually be detrimental to their health.
For precisely the same reason, when repotting plants, I often advise enlarging the diameter of a plant pot by no more than 1-2 inches. Overpotting puts your plant at risk of root rot since the soil does not dry out quickly.
Choice Of Pot
The soil retains water far better in non-porous pot materials like plastic and metal than in porous materials like terracotta. The rate at which the soil dries out can be significantly accelerated by switching to a porous substance.
Even though I often use plastic containers for most of my plants, doing so makes it much harder to maintain their health. Insert a wooden skewer into the plant’s soil to check whether it is ready for watering. You only need to insert it 1 to 2 inches deep for small to medium-sized pots. You should almost completely insert the skewer into large pots.
Slowly take out the skewer. The plant doesn’t need watering just yet if there is moist dirt adhering to the skewer. On the other hand, if the soil is loose, dry, and easy to remove, it needs watering.
How can moist soil in a potted plant be dried?
- Increase the amount of light your plant is receiving. Make sure the light is suitable for the plant you are growing in the first place, of course. A plant will utilize water more quickly if it is placed in an area with greater light.
- Make sure to empty any extra water from the plant, whether it is on the saucer underneath it or the decorative pot without drainage holes that it is placed in.
- The plant’s root ball can be placed on top of a layer of newspaper after being gently removed from its original container. The newspaper will aid in absorbing extra moisture. Until the water has been drawn out as much as possible, you might need to switch out the newspapers a few times.
- A plant that has been overwatered and is ailing should not be fertilized. This will exacerbate the condition.
Pay attention to your plants
The best advice for general plant maintenance is to give your plants regular attention! One of the main factors contributing to poor plant health is improper irrigation, which frequently results from neglect. It can be simple for us to forget to check on our plants due to our hectic lifestyles. How many times have we thought, “I should water that later,” only to forget to do it? most likely quite a few.
If you check on your plants once every two days or so, you can spot tiny changes like withering leaves. Being alert to such changes will enable you to take preemptive action if your plant is drying out, which is significantly more efficient than following a set watering schedule.
Research your plant’s needs.
You should research the individual plant care needs of any new plant you intend to grow, whether it be an edible or indoor houseplant. One excellent approach to stay on top of your watering schedule is to understand which plants will dry up more quickly than others. Keep in mind that plants in warm, dry rooms and those in hanging baskets should be checked frequently because they dry up very rapidly. Most plants won’t require as much water when they are dormant, so you can cut back on your watering frequency as autumn approaches.
Check the surface of the soil
You can determine if the dirt on the surface of your pot is dry at a look. Since dry soil is nearly always lighter in color than moist soil, lighter brown soil implies surface dryness.
Although this method provides a general indicator of plant dryness, it works best with plants like umbrella palms and Boston ferns that can be maintained permanently moist.
For drought-tolerant plants like cacti, succulents, and Ficus species, it is less helpful because watering them when only the top layer of soil is dry will certainly result in overwatering. To determine whether these plants require watering, you need to dig a little deeper.
Poke your finger into the soil
Sticking your finger into the dirt is one of the simplest ways to determine whether your plant needs watering. Compared to just looking at the surface, this provides a clearer idea of the moisture content of the soil. You can feel how moist or dry the soil is by extending your hand 2-3 inches into it. Due to its restricted reach, this method works best with smaller potted plants. When using this technique, take care not to harm the roots; if you feel roots, try another section of the pot.
Lift your pots to determine their weight
Lifting the pots of your plants to check their weight is another approach to evaluate whether they need watering. When watering, nurseries frequently do this.
The plant will be lighter than usual if it is dry because water contributes to its weight. If you have a lot of potted plants, this rapid method is suggested! Try tilting larger pots to determine their weight.
The more times you use this strategy, the better you’ll get at it. You may determine which potted plants need watering by routinely picking them up. Lift the pot once you have finished watering it to determine its heaviest weight. This makes comparing its weight a few days later simpler. It probably needs watering if it seems much lighter.
Use a moisture sensor
You will undoubtedly be in a good position to determine when to water your plants if you put all the methods listed above into practice. However, given that you can typically find them for less than $10, there is no need to disregard a smart technological solution.
