Flowers are often best pollinated in the middle of the morning. The temperatures are suitable for the pollen to function and there is no dew on them. On a rainy day, stay away from pollination since pollen will be destroyed by water.
How to do it:
1. Plant a bed with the two plant varieties that will be crossed. Use any buds or unopened flowers that are colored but not yet open on the plant you want to pollinate.
2. Split open the buds and take out the pollen-containing anthers (fig.1 & 2). Dust the stigma of the plant that has to be pollinated with pollen from the plant that will serve as the pollinator (fig. 3). (fig.4). Rudbeckia, Chrysanthemum, Tagetes, and other members of the Compositae (Daisy) family have flowers made up of several little florets that open from the periphery inward toward the center. As they open inward, these tiny florets need to be pollinated on successive days.
3. Plants can be pollinated by rubbing the two blossoms together or, in some situations, with a paintbrush. Sometimes the presence of a sticky or shiny solution forming on the tip of the stigma can indicate when it is at its most receptive. When receptive, the stigma of some plant species can also enlarge or change shape.
4. After pollinating each bloom, lay a bag over it or enclose the entire plant in an insect-proof cage (see “Isolating your plant” under the “Selection Method” section).
5. Plants have a number of trigger mechanisms that act to indicate successful fertilization. While the stigma will blacken and shrivel on some, the petals will fall off of others. The ovule where the seed develops will eventually start to expand and ripen. Continue to pollinate additional flowers as they open, labeling each cross with a thin label that has been pencil-sketched.
Avoid utilizing F1 hybrid types when cross-pollinating since their frequently complex parentage can hinder breeding in its early stages. F1 hybrids can, nevertheless, provide an useful source of variation when looking for novel material through selection.

Sending in your new plant
1. You are prepared to send in a sample once you are satisfied that your plant is sufficiently unique from any others on the market or that a significant portion of the seed germinates successfully.
2. If you have selected the vegetative approach and would like to send cuttings, send them in a plastic bag with a zipper and holes punched in the top for airflow. To prevent the plants from drying out, the area around the roots should also be covered in moist tissue.
3. After that, just identify your seeds or seedlings, place them in a tiny box or envelope, and mail them using first-class mail.
4. Always have some seeds or seedlings on hand in case something gets lost during transportation.

How are hybrid plants created?
Pollen is transferred between two types of the same plant in order to produce a hybrid plant. More specifically, the stamen of one plant’s flower pollinates the pistil of another flower, which is its female counterpart. You can collect, plant, and nurture the hybridized seeds found in the ensuing fruits.
Even though you have no control over how the hybridization procedure will turn out, you might still be happy with the new plants you developed from collected seeds. - Choose the plant that will serve as the female (the pistil) and the one that you wish to collect pollen from (the stamen, male parts).
- By pinching it off with your fingers, remove the stamen from the female plant (the long, thin stalk in the center of a flower). Your plant might be able to self-pollinate if you skip this phase, but it might be challenging because the flowers aren’t yet fully open enough for you to easily get inside.
- Remove the male flower’s stem. Before transferring the pollen to the female, you might need to snip off the petals using a pair of cuticle scissors to gain access to it.
- Push the male flower’s anthers—the pollen that is located on top of the stamen—into the female flower. To hand pollinate, lightly rub the two plants together. Pollen can also be moved from a male flower to a female blossom using a cotton swab or paintbrush. Toss the male blossom away.
- Carefully cover the female flower with a plastic bag to stop wind, insects, or birds from naturally cross-pollinating it.
- By marking the female flowers, you can keep track of your hybridization efforts. What kind of male flower did you use to fertilize the female flowers?
- The seeds that are produced when the female plant’s ripe fruits are harvested, stored, and labeled (fruits typically appear after the flowers have died).
- The following year, plant the hybrid seeds to create your first hybrid plant.
