DENVER Springtime brings a plethora of plant activity, including the cacti blooming season, as well as warmer weather.

The Claret Cup, the official cactus of Colorado, is one of many cactus species that may be found there.

Cactus plants may begin to bloom in May or June, providing some vibrant visual candy for those who wander outdoors, depending on the variety of cactus and the area.

Different cacti can be found in different parts of the state, many of them within a day’s drive of Denver, according to horticulturists at the Denver Botanic Gardens. Here are some places to look:

Colorado is home to more than a dozen different varieties of cacti, many of which have colorful flowers. Here are 10 different types of cacti that you could encounter in Colorado.

Cactus can be found in Colorado Springs?

The cholla is an upright, asymmetrical-shaped cactus that naturally grows from Pueblo to the south of Colorado Springs. From the main, greenish-gray stems, it has a few short arms (joints) that spread out horizontally. Beautiful, double, vivid pink blooms appear in the summer, and they are followed by fruit that is yellow.

Cacti grow in Denver?

The fact that cactus are so simple to take care of is the main reason why people love them. Neglect is ideal for cacti. Given that these plants are adapted to some of the toughest environments on earth, Denver should be a breeze for them thanks to Colorado’s roughly 300 days of sunshine per year.

While unusual, the prickly form is also very attractive. Cacti are like living sculptures with their spiky skin and striking shapes. You can choose from a number of sizes, designs, and hues, so you’re sure to find one you like. Cacti have the same advantages as other indoor plants, including:

Where can I find cacti?

Only a few hardy species of opuntia and escobaria are present in almost every US state and southern Canadian province, although they are much more common in the southwest’s arid areas. Cacti are prevalent in six US states, including (roughly) the following: Arizona (83), California (35), New Mexico (56), Nevada (26), Utah (34) and Texas (91).

The Sonoran, Chihuahuan, and Mojave deserts correspond to the lower elevations and southernmost places where the densest populations can be found. The hottest part of the Sonoran Desert in southeast California and southwest Arizona also has a relatively small number of species for the same reason. The best places to see cacti are south and southeast Arizona, south New Mexico, and far west Texas, especially in the Big Bend region. Of these three, the Mojave has somewhat fewer species due to its low rainfall.

The golden cereus, Munz’s cholla, coastal cholla, chaparral prickly pear, and San Diego barrel cactus are just a few of the rare cactus species that grow in California’s far southwest, close to San Diego, and down the coast into Santa Barbara. These can be seen in locations like Torrey Pines State Reserve, Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area, and Cabrillo National Monument, but the majority of California species are found in the southeasterly deserts, specifically in Mojave, Anza Borrego, Death Valley, and Joshua Tree National Parks. Joshua Tree is particularly fruitful because it is located on the border of the Sonoran and Mojave deserts, and as a result, has plants typical of both.

Arizona has two National Park Service (NPS) locations dedicated to particular cacti: Organ Pipe Cactus National Monument in the far south, bordering Mexico, and Saguaro National Park on either side of Tucson. With approximately 30 species, some of which are fairly rare (like senita), this latter area is one of the best cactus places in the entire state. Other cactus-filled desert preserves include Kofa NWR, Sonoran Desert National Monument, Cabeza Prieta NWR, Ironwood Forest National Monument, and Agua Fria National Monument. Several small state parks, like Catalina, Sabino Canyon, Lost Dutchman, and Alamo Lake, also provide an excellent introduction to the local flora. The region in the far southeast between Nogales and the Chiricahua Mountains, which is where certain plants from the adjacent Chihuahuan Desert may be seen, as well as some that are significantly more frequent over the border in Mexico, has the most uncommon species, except from Organ Pipe NM. Cacti, however, are abundant throughout the state; for instance, the Canyon De Chelly National Monument is home to 12 different species. A few areas in the north also contain some extremely rare species, such as the pediocactus bradyii in the Marble Canyon region and the sclerocactus sileri on the Kaibab Plateau. Visit a botanical garden, like the Boyce Thompson Arboretum in Superior or the Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum west of Tucson, if you want to observe a wide variety of plant species all in one spot.

Around 20 different varieties of cacti can be found in Nevada’s far south, on the edge of the Mojave Desert. These include the hills that border Lake Mead and Lake Mohave, the foothills of Mount Charleston, and Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area. The most prominent species are the Engelmann’s hedgehog cactus, California barrel cactus, many headed barrel, five different varieties of cholla, and several opuntia. The Great Basin Desert covers the rest of the state, which has fewer cacti but still contains a few very unusual species (sclerocactus).

The majority of the state of Utah is covered in cacti, including the Colorado Plateau, the Uinta Basin in the northeast, and low-lying areas of the southwest (on the edge of the Mojave Desert). The well-known national parks (Arches, Capital Reef, Zion, and Canyonlands) are each home to more than a dozen species, and Utah contains about six forms of cactus that are unique to the US. However, there is no one optimum spot (sclerocactus and pediocactus species).

Over 50 cactus species can be found in the Chihuahuan Desert, which makes up the southern third of New Mexico. These species can be found in places like Oliver Lee Memorial State Park, the Carlsbad Caverns National Park backcountry, and (in a botanical garden setting) Living Desert State Park in Carlsbad.

With around 100 different cactus species, Texas is the state with the most. The majority are found along the Rio Grande, close to the Mexican border, particularly in the Big Bend region, in Big Bend National Park and Big Bend Ranch State Park. In particular, the species of coryphantha, echinomastus, and escobaria are at their northernmost ranges on this terrain. In the far south, in the area of Brownsville, there is another cluster of rare species. Cacti can also be found in the Davis Mountains/Fort Davis, Guadalupe Mountains, and Black Gap WMA in the Chihuahuan Desert.

Succulents – are they native to Colorado?

Nature’s garden had a profusion of cactus before Colorado pioneers introduced the shrubs and trees that today cover the Front Range. The high desert plateau where we live is a good fit for these native landscaping plants. Cacti are unique to the Western Hemisphere, after all. The majority of us, however, fail to notice the sculptural value that cacti, when surrounded by low-growing ground coverings, local grasses, and wildflowers, offer.

These exotic heritage plants work naturally in any garden setting

Cacti found in Colorado range in height from short columnar cacti like the Trichocereus species to low-growing cacti like barrel and hedgehog cacti. Although they are not real cacti, other well-known succulents like aloes, agaves, and chollas make comparable structural statements in gardens and are xeriphytic (use little water). The native Yucca is a wonderful companion plant in a low-water area even though it is neither a cactus nor a succulent.

Cacti have a clear benefit in that they require little water and a lot of sunlight. Among other conventional low-water perennials, they offer texture and an eye-catching form, making them a classic xeriscape plant. They enjoy the typical 15 inches of rain we receive and require at least 4-6 hours of direct sunlight each day in addition to well-drained soils.

Cactus Facts:

  • All succulents are succulents, but not all cacti are succulents. Any plant that can retain moisture in its stems, leaves, or roots is considered a succulent. Sempervivums, agave, ice plants, and sedums are just a few examples of the succulent native xeriphytic plants found in Colorado. Cacti can be recognized by their aeroles, which can grow into flowers or spines.
  • The health of your cactus will be most immediately impacted by the state of the soil, which is crucial. After irrigation or rain, soils must be well-drained and not harbor standing water. Cacti prefer sandy soil, however clay soils along the front Range should be avoided and should have enough of organic matter added in addition to the sand to prevent the formation of impermeable adobe.
  • Make sure they get at least 15 to 16 inches of rain per year because cacti are also thirsty. In the summer, if your plant appears wrinkled, mushy, or withering, it needs water. Only water in June–August if the soil is dry and there is no chance of rain. Your winter-hardy cactus will start to store less water in the fall in preparation for freezes, and they may start to look limp, dry, and brown. They’ll be back in the spring, so don’t worry.

I used to associate the word “cactus” with a scorching, dry desert when I heard it. Cacti were fascinating plants, but I only ever expected to see them in picture books or botanical gardens, with the exception of the rare potted surprise from the dollar shop.

But I later discovered that I was mistaken. The majority of cactus species are cold-sensitive. However, tougher varieties thrive in Canada. Cacti can be grown year-round outdoors in your own garden without much difficulty.

Some cacti can withstand freezing temperatures in USDA zones 6 to 9, and some can even survive in USDA zone 4, given the correct soil conditions. All of them can tolerate temperatures in AHS zones 12 to 1.

The species in the following groups are not all cold-tolerant. Verify the hardiness zones of any plants you see in a nursery or catalog that I haven’t mentioned here.

How do cactus endure the winter?

The majority of cacti are found in the drier parts of North and South America, although some have even migrated into Canada. These chilly warriors have developed certain defenses to survive even when covered in snow and are specially adapted to frigid temperatures. Find out which cold-weather cacti will work well in your winter landscaping.

No matter if a cactus is cold-hardy or not, it needs soil that drains effectively. Even the cold-tolerant varieties won’t live without it. The only succulents with areoles, from which the spines emerge, are cacti. These spines aid in moisture conservation, shadow production, and can help prevent the plant from freezing.

Cold weather cactus typically have pronounced spines that are frequently encircled by smaller prickles. This structure appears to be both protective and defensive. Be aware of your USDA zone and the cold hardiness range of the plant before buying cold-hardy cacti.

Does Colorado have prickly pears?

The prickly pear cactus can be found all around the state of Colorado, even at higher elevations, due to the area’s predominantly arid climate.

There are three distinct edible parts of the prickly pear plant:

The pear (tuna), which can be treated like a fruit, the pad, and the blossoms can all be prepared similarly to vegetables and fruits. They flourish untamed in the American Southwest, all the way to South America, and all the way up to Canada.

It goes without saying that you should be cautious of the spines when searching for prickly pear pads. Even though the huge spines are frightening, you should be afraid of the tiny, hair-like spines. Put on thick gloves or sever them at the stem. Look for firm, vivid green pads. The tastier pads are the smaller, younger ones because they have less spines. Older pads tend to be stringy and have heavier sap.

Use a knife or another object to remove the spines. Don’t be deceived once the enormous spines have been removed; there are microscopic, invisible spines that, when implanted in your flesh, are exceedingly irritating. The small hair-like spines, which are difficult to remove and will make you wish you had placed one of the larger spines into your hand instead, are worse than the large ones. When removing the tiny spines, always sure to position yourself downwind. They can be taken out of the cactus using fire as well. After the spines have been taken out, clean with water and trim any problematic areas.

You can remove the majority of the tiny spines with duct tape if you do manage to get them trapped in your flesh. Duct tape can be used in place of glue and gauze if you don’t have any other options. If not, I’m hoping you have tweezers.

Leave whole or chop the pad (nopale) into strips when cooking it. You can boil or broil them while incorporating additional ingredients as you like. Rinse them and re-boil them if the sap is too thick for you to handle while boiling. Although the sap won’t injure you, it could taste or feel unpleasant.

Use the same technique to remove the spines to prepare the pear. Before slicing into the pears, make sure to clean them to get rid of any little spines. Although all pears are edible, finding them when they are ripe may be challenging. Purchase them when they are deep purple and just beginning to wrinkle. To skin the pair, first cut off the ends, being careful not to cut into the center, which is loaded with seeds. After that, make longitudinal cuts along the edges just like you would when skinning an apple. The pear is now ready to eat after the skin and spines have been removed.

In Colorado, are saguaro cacti able to survive?

To commemorate, we’re delving deeper into these incredibly unique cacti’s history. (However, be careful; those spines are fairly pointy.)

The word is pronounced “suh-wahr-oh,” first things foremost.

2. Saguaros grow very slowly, like other desert plants. However, they have the potential to grow into enormous trees; the largest saguaro ever recorded was known as “the Grand One.” It was 46 feet tall, had a dozen arms, and was almost 200 years old. A wildfire in 2005 damaged and eventually destroyed this star saguaro.

3. Even though they serve as the scenery for classic Western films set everywhere from Colorado to Wyoming, gigantic saguaros only naturally grow in the northern Sonoran Desert. Saguaros prefer the heat, hence they aren’t generally seen above 4,000 feet in elevation.

4. The saguaro has evolved to take advantage of every raindrop. The cactus has one deep taproot, while the rest of its roots spread out near the ground’s surface to soak up as much water as they can before it evaporates. A ribbed, woody backbone that supports saguaros unfolds like an accordion to help the plant retain moisture.

5. In Arizona, it is illegal to damage a saguaro cactus; landowners must obtain a specific permit before beginning any construction that will harm a living thing.

Although climate change threatens to render the northern Sonora Desert too hot and dry for even the saguaro, these strict restrictions do little to combat it.

7. Introduced species like buffelgrass, which increases the risk of wildfire and can crowd out juvenile saguaros, also pose a threat to the cactus. By manually plucking the plant up from its roots, the National Park Service and neighborhood volunteer organizations search for and eliminate buffelgrass infestations.

8. In the late spring and early summer, saguaros display a brief crown of blooms. The blooms open at night and last until the next afternoon, giving bees and bats a brief window of opportunity to collect pollen from inside.

9. After the blossoms fade, the plants develop into large, crimson fruits that are a delightful desert delicacy and a crucial source of nutrition for communities living in desert regions, such as the Tohono O’Odham. Saguaro fruit has been gathered by the Tohono O’Odham people for tens of thousands of years utilizing a long pole formed of the woody ribs of the plant.

10. The saguaro is essential to dozens of animal species. Their fruit, blossoms, and flesh are consumed by birds, bats, insects, lizards, and mammals. Predatory birds and even certain ground creatures, like bobcats, rest (carefully!) in the arms of spiky cacti. Gilded flickers and gila woodpeckers dig out nest chambers in mature plants, and once they go, other species, such pygmy owls, move in to raise the young.
