Succulents provide a wide range of lovely gardening opportunities, but they are also a haven for a lot of bugs. There are several things you can do to keep these bugs out, but even so, they will continue to try to return. There’s a good possibility that gnats, flies, and beetles were there if you’ve ever seen a succulent in the wild.
Spiders are drawn to succulents because they provide cover from predators, moisture, and a location to build a nest. Spiders of many different species build webs around the bases of succulent plants since they don’t care about them. Use natural pesticides to treat the problem.

Which insects do cacti attract?
Growing succulent plants has several advantages, one of which is the absence of pests. Even if there are fewer pests on these plants, they can nevertheless attack. The most frequent pests of succulent and cactus plants are tiny gnats, aphids, and mealybugs, so it’s crucial to keep an eye out for them.
Are spiders bad for cacti?
Spider mites harm succulents and cacti alike by draining the juices from the plants. Webbing and tiny brown dots on the new growth of succulent plants are the first indicators that you have spider mites. These small “insects” are more closely linked to spiders than to actual insects. When seen with the naked eye, they resemble dust.
In reality, red spider mites are reddish-brown in color, and they like hot, dry environments. Misting and above watering might lessen their occurrence since they don’t like dampness. The innocuous, much larger red mite, which is a harmless predator mite, should not be mistaken with these red spider mites. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions when using a miticide to completely get rid of these mites from the plant. Phytoseiulus persimilis is another predator that can be utilized as a biological control. In addition to needing temperatures above 70 F (21 C), this predator finds it challenging to keep a balance between prey and predator.
There are other pests besides spider mites that harm succulent plants. Eriophyid mites are those that feed on aloe and also affect other species including Haworthia and Gasteri. These mites have two pairs of legs as opposed to the four sets of legs found on spider mites.
The poison that this mite injects into the tissue causes galling or other aberrant development as it eats. Aloe succulent mite damage is irreparable in aloe plants, and the plant needs to be thrown out. To avoid contaminating other plants, put sick plants in a garbage bag or burn them. Use a miticide on the plant as directed by the manufacturer if the infestation is not severe. Aloes that can withstand freezing temperatures can be exposed to them to kill the mites.
The two-spotted mite, another type of mite, prefers to eat yucca. This mite appears pink, yellow-green, or red under a microscope, with two dark dots on its body. They lack wings and antennae but have eight legs. Tan or gray stippling of foliage is a surefire marker of the two-spotted mite’s existence.
A fine webbing can once more be observed on the undersides of leaves as the infestation gets worse. The plant will perish if the infestation is bad. Flowers, new branches, and spines emerge from areoles. Spines come in a variety of shapes and sizes; some are delicate and feathery to shield the plant from harsh sunlight, while others are strong and spiky to provide protection. The spines on cacti restrict animals from getting to their water supply, even though they may be one of the few sources of water in arid areas. Cacti have a waxy covering called a cuticle that serves as a barrier against water loss. They also use stomata, which open at night instead of during the day like other plants do, to conserve water. The plant’s stomata are tiny pores that allow carbon dioxide to enter for photosynthesis.
The size of cacti varies according on the species. Blossfeldia liliputana, a South American plant with a mature diameter of less than an inch (2.5 centimeters), may be the smallest cacti species. The Mexican enormous cardon, which is almost 60 feet tall, is the tallest cactus (18 meters).
The majority of cacti genera originated in the Americas and can be found from Canada to Chile. They are now widespread around the world, particularly in Australia, South Africa, and nations in the Mediterranean.
Some people mistakenly believe that cacti are only found in the desert, yet many species, like the prickly pear cactus, may be found in a variety of settings.
Cacti are seed-producing blooming plants. They are able to bloom every year, but when it rains a lot, they will produce a lot of flowers. Different flowers have different looks and smells to draw different pollinators, like insects and bats. Cacti grow slowly and have a long lifespan. Saguaro cacti, for instance, can survive for up to 175 years. Between the ages of 75 and 100, they do not develop their first arms.

Horticultural Oil
Another all-natural remedy for controlling spider mites on cactus plants is horticultural oil spider mite treatment.
This spider mite control approach coats leaves with a protective layer that suffocates spider mites by preventing them from getting to the plant’s surface.
For each application of this spider mite treatment, combine one tablespoon of horticultural oil with two gallons of water in a spray bottle and give it a good shake.
Spray the whole surface of your cacti, including the stems, fissures, and any other area where spider mites are likely to be present, after you have finished combining your mixture.
Predatory Mites
Introducing predatory mites that feed on spider mite eggs, larvae, nymphs, and adults is another efficient method for getting rid of spider mites on cacti plants.
These predators will eliminate spider mites without endangering pollinators, other insects, or the natural enemies of spiders.
To enhance spider mite mortality, you must keep releasing predatory mites every several days.
High-Pressure Water
Another spider mite treatment technique you can employ to get rid of spider mites on cactus plants is high-pressure water.
Spider mites will be forced off the leaves by the high-pressure jet and launched into a pail of soapy or plain water, where they will finally drown and perish.
Because some spider mites may have survived after being driven away from your plant’s leaves by wind, you might need to repeat this spider mite treatment in order for it to be completely successful.
Beneficial Insects
Introducing beneficial insects like ladybugs, green lacewings, and predatory wasps, which are spider mites’ natural enemies, is another effective spider mite treatment strategy you can apply.
Ladybugs consume spider mite eggs, while the other two, depending on their species, consume spider mite larvae, nymphs, or adults.
The population of this parasitic predator on your plant must be rebuilt over the course of a week until it is ready for the return of spider mites the following season.
Alcohol and Water
The only way to cure spider mites on cactus plants if they have already gotten deep inside the plant’s tissues is to pour alcohol or rubbing alcohol mixed with water at a ratio of one part rubbing/isopropyl alcohol to three parts water.
Directly apply this mixture to any area that has been afflicted with spider mites, covering it completely. Alcohol will cause the exoskeleton of the spider mites to dry out, leading to their desiccation and eventual death while keeping the leaves of your cactus unharmed.
Dish Soap
You can also use dish soap with water at a ratio of one teaspoon per quart (liter) of water to cure spider mites.
Then, fill an atomizer or spray bottle with the mixture and begin dousing cactus plants in spider mites until they are totally covered.
Dish soap will suffocate and kill spider mites by rupturing the integrity of their exoskeleton, which ultimately leads to desiccation and death.
Diatomaceous Earth
Dusting your plant’s leaves with diatomaceous earth is another spider mite treatment option you can employ if the spider mites on your cacti plants are still in the nymphal or larval stage.
They will become dehydrated and die as a result, leaving other insects, such pollinators, alone. This spider mite treatment must be used again every two weeks until all spider mites are eliminated.
Mouthwash
You can also use mouthwash mixed with water at a ratio of one teaspoon of soap per quart (liter) of water as a treatment for spider mites.
Spray the mixture on cactus plants until they are thoroughly covered in spider mites by placing it in an atomizer or spray bottle.
By destroying the integrity of the spider mites’ exoskeleton, mouthwash will suffocate and kill them, causing desiccation and eventual death.
Do cacti harbor insects?
The saguaro at dusk or a lone barrel cactus growing on a stretch of desolate sand have been rendered iconic by films and television, while cacti in the terrain evoke images of rough desert scenery. Therefore, it shouldn’t be surprising that these plants help create visually appealing home gardens. Landscape cacti also draw a variety of hungry insects that are unaware they are ruining your meticulously planned desert garden. Fortunately, once you’ve located the problem, the majority of cactus bugs are simple to eradicate.
Cockroaches are attracted to succulents?
There’s less possibility that roaches will migrate in if you regularly clean your house and wash dirty dishes right away. They will then leave your potted plants alone as a result.
Avoid Certain Plants
Cockroaches enjoy digging into the soil of potted trees and hiding out of sight. Indoor trees and tropical plants are among their favorite things to eat. Additionally, there is a lot of humidity for roaches to consume.
Tropical plants need a lot of humidity. They require a lot of water but struggle in direct sunlight, creating a dank, wet habitat that cockroaches adore. Choose potted plants that don’t require a lot of water, such succulents or orchids, as these kinds of plants are more likely to attract roaches.
Don’t Use Outdoor Soil
Even if your home is spotless and you have taken all reasonable precautions to keep it roach-proof, using soil from the outdoors makes it more likely that cockroaches will infest your house. This is due to the fact that they lay eggs in outdoor plants and soil, which then migrate inside the house.
Use potting soil in place of outdoor soil to prevent this. Don’t pot outdoor plants indoors either. If necessary, dig out as much soil as you can before bringing them indoors.
Don’t Overwater
Overwatering your plants is another way to encourage cockroaches to settle there. Along with producing an abundance of water, this also makes the leaves, stems, and roots decay. Cockroaches consume decomposing waste, which gives them the food they need to grow.
Avoid Leftover Food as Compost
Composting can be done with leftover food. The issue is that roaches eat things that are decomposing, such rotten fruit, eggshells, kitchen trash, and manure. Researchers from Chulalongkorn University claim that cockroaches prefer bananas to the majority of other diets. Use liquid fertilizer from the store, which insects avoid, if you have roaches in your potted plants.
Do cactus flies sting?
It appears as though someone wearing yellow-green lipstick kissed this young Cactus Apple or Engelmann’s Prickly Pear (Opuntia engelmannii) repeatedly (painful), but it was actually constantly sucked on by Cactus Bugs or Opuntia Bugs (Chelinidea sp.). Both the adults and the nymphs of cactus bugs feed on these cacti by biting into their skin and sucking out their circulatory fluids. Cactus bugs lay their eggs on the undersides of pricklypear (Opuntia spp.) spines.
I’m not positive of the identify of the cactus bug pictured above that I saw here in Tucson, Arizona, as there are at least two different species of cactus bugs that can be found in Arizona, Chelinidea tabulata and C. vittigera (previously C. vittiger).
Since many of them later succumbed to one, I had assumed that the Opuntia cacti with these yellow rings were infected with a cactus virus. However, I later learned that these chlorotic rings are actually directly brought on by the sucking of cactus bugs. Unfortunately, feeding cactus bugs can harm an Opuntia cactus in addition to infecting it with bacteria, fungi, or viruses that manifest as gray or black spots, yellow mottling, or rings (rot). The cactus may die as a result of these secondary illnesses.
Adult cactus bugs are dark to blackish, about half an inch (1.3 cm) long, and have the conventional shape of a genuine bug, along with a distinguishing yellowish stripe along the top of their heads, a solid yellowish pronotum, and yellowish veins on their leathery forewings (Order Hemiptera). The nymphs are plump, teardrop-shaped, and typically come in a variety of colors, including red, green, and brown.
True bugs, also known as Hemipterans, have sucking mouthparts. Some of these bugs, like Assassin Bugs, are predatory and will capture and suck on other insects, while others eat plants or even human blood. Since they feed on plant liquids, true bugs like cactus bugs can spread plant diseases from one plant to another. They can also do this by leaving behind open wounds that might harbor bacteria.
