How To Care For An Air Plant Terrarium?

I know you thought spritzing your tilly every few days would suffice, but it won’t. Air plants, on the other hand, require a little more attention. In these parts, I’m known as the air plant whisperer, and this is what I do: I put them in a container large enough to fully submerge them once a week and leave them there. For a long time. I always intend to soak my plants overnight, like Airplant Man said. On Fridays, however, I do it for a few hours (I keep mine at work and don’t see them on weekends). It varies, but a weekly dunking for several hours hasn’t harmed any of them, and they’re all prospering.

Can air plants live in a terrarium?

I recently visited the Edison and Ford Winter Estates in Ft. Myers, Florida, where I viewed their homes, gardens, laboratories, and museum. The plant collections there are fascinating, particularly those of the rubber trees that were evaluated as potential tire materials suppliers.

I took use of Edison’s most famous invention, the light bulb, by purchasing a small terrarium-style hanging planter styled like a light bulb. An air plant sits in sphagnum moss on the inside. I adore looking at it every day because it hangs above my kitchen window.

The Bromeliad family’s air plants, commonly known as Tillandsia, are fascinating plants. Bromeliads are all epiphytes, meaning they rely on something else for support. As a result, plants in nature use their root systems to grow on trees and rocks without harming them. Rather than obtaining water and nutrients from the soil through their roots, they obtain them from the air and rain through their leaves.

Simply give three essentials to maintain air plants healthy and happy: sun, water, and air movement.

First, light in the form of filtered, rather than direct, sunshine from a south, east, or west window is required. You can hang them outside in a tree or other sheltered spot throughout the summer.

Second, appropriate irrigation is essential for Tillandsia growth. I mist mine every few days to keep the sphagnum moss substrate moist while allowing the plant to dry out slightly in between waterings. The leaves are too dry if they curl or roll. Submerge the plant in water overnight to revive it, then shake off any excess water before returning it to its display spot.

Third, proper air circulation allows the plant to dry out between waterings, which helps it avoid illnesses.

Terrariums, which are clear glass or plastic containers packed with miniature plants, are ideal for displaying air plants. Typically, terrariums are securely closed, but one side of my light-bulb-shaped container is fully open to aid air circulation.

How do you take care of air plants in a terrarium?

Soak the plants for 10-20 minutes, face down, in a bowl, sink, or container. Always gently shake any excess water off the plants’ bases, as standing water can promote rot and lead the plant to die. We recommend watering the plants first thing in the morning and leaving them out of their containers for at least four hours to dry. Allowing your air plant to sit in water for an extended amount of time is not recommended. You can also water your plants by “dunking” them in the water many times and gently shaking off the excess.

If your plant is struggling and appears to be “hungry,” soak it in the dish for a few hours or perhaps overnight.

The leaves of a healthy air plant will be broad and open, but the leaves of a dehydrated air plant will be closed and curled!

Submerging the bloom or flower in water can cause it to decay.

If you’re using tap water, let it sit for a few hours to let any contaminants evaporate before watering the plants.

When feasible, utilize water from a pond, aquarium, or rain.

Bottled water and spring water are also acceptable, but distilled or chemically softened water should never be used!

Keep in mind that each plant species is unique and will necessitate various watering regimes.

Never, ever, ever put your air plants in soil!

Another key aspect for your Air Plant is…well, you guessed it…air!

To thrive and live a healthy life, the plants will require sufficient clean air circulation.

It’s critical that the plants have enough air circulation to dry within 4 hours of being watered.

While Air Plants thrive in containers, it is recommended that they not be shown in enclosed containers and that they be totally dry before returning to a container with restricted air circulation.

Plants placed too close to air conditioning vents may dry up more quickly and require more frequent watering.

If you’re going to keep your air plants in a terrarium or globe, you’ll need to take them out for regular watering and make sure they’re totally dry before putting them back in.

4 hours is usually sufficient.

If the tillandsia is in a terrarium or globe, you can mist it on a regular basis to keep it moist.

The fewer mistings you give your plants, the smaller and more compact the globe.

You can give it a few sprays from a water mister a few times a week if the terrarium is larger and has better air circulation.

Simply ensure that the plant is not over-mistered and that it dries within a few hours of being placed in the terrarium.

If you bought one of our wonderful sea urchin kits, please sure to remove the air plant from the sea urchin before immersing it.

Allow the plant to air dry for many hours after removing it from the sea urchin.

If you return the air plant to the sea urchin while it is still damp, it will be damaged since the base of the plant will be covered and eventually decompose.

While remaining inside the sea urchin, feel free to spray softly.

Do air plants need terrarium?

Xeric variants, on the other hand, grow on cliff faces and rocky outcroppings. These air plants require significantly less water, prefer limited amounts of direct sunshine and plenty of air movement, and contain roots that can be used to attach themselves. The trichomes that cover the leaves of the xeric types differ from those of the mesic varieties in that they extract extra moisture from the air. In contrast to the glossy greenish hue of the mesic air plants, they almost appear to have silver fur.

We may create a better environment for Tillandsia in our homes by understanding the native conditions in which they thrive. I always advocate maintaining Tillandsia in an open terrarium because they thrive in damp environments. The key is to create an environment with a higher relative humidity than our ordinary homes while still allowing for enough circulation. Keeping a Tillandsia under a cloche or in a confined terrarium is doomed to failure. So seek for glass containers with a large top opening or holes in the sides.

Traditional terrariums require multiple layers (as mentioned in a previous blog article), but an air plant terrarium only requires one: the drainage layer. The drainage media’s objective is to protect the plants from sitting in water at any time, and it can be made of nearly anything that won’t rot. You can also add some moss or lichen for added decoration and dampness.

Finally, but maybe most critically, Tillandsia require enough lighting. Many individuals try to keep their air plants in conditions that are too dark. In comparison to their natural surroundings, our dwellings are caves. Ideally, they should be placed in an east or west facing window. They can also be to the side or away from a bright south-facing window. The goal is to have bright indirect light during the day, with a few of hours of direct sunlight in the morning or afternoon.

To summarize, an open glass vessel, inert drainage media, possibly some decorative moss, and proper light levels are required to produce a good home for Tillandsia.

Where should I put my air plant?

All air plants are native to tropical areas where freezing and frost are unheard of. Is it necessary to keep them at temperatures that you are comfortable in without wearing a sweater? Temperatures are usually in the 60s and higher. Place them away from air conditioner vents and drafty winter windows.

Air plants need at least a few hours of bright, indirect sunlight per day to thrive. It’s best to put it within 1 to 3 feet of an east- or west-facing window, or within a foot or two of a light source. They may have hotter, more direct sun and longer exposure if you keep them well watered. Avoid places that are dimly lighted.

How often should I mist my air plant?

Air plants in glass globes have grown so popular that I’m always getting calls asking how to care for them. Follow these simple instructions to get the most out of your glass-encased plant. If you’re seeking for glass globes, our shop has a wide selection of distinctive patterns.

  • When you initially get your plant, immerse it in water for 20-30 minutes. Take note of the plant’s size and color to determine how content it is. Keep this “image” in your thoughts at all times.
  • Every 4-5 days, mist your plant with one spray for tiny globes, 2-3 sprays for globes 3-5 inches in diameter, and more if the plant is in a large open globe. The trick is to determine the drying time; the smaller the globe, the less circulation, the longer the plant will retain moisture. The plant will perish if it is overwatered.
  • Remember how your plant appeared after it had been soaked? If it has lost its joyful, healthy appearance, remove it from the globe and soak it for 30 minutes to an hour, then shake it and allow it dry almost entirely before replacing it.
  • Do not position your globes in front of a window that receives direct sunlight. Keep in mind that the glass will magnify the sunshine and heat. The ideal light is indirect light, and certain plants may even flourish in low to moderate light.

How do you get air plants to bloom?

The wait is finally over! Your air plant has finally bloomed after a lot of love and care! You might wonder how it got to this point, and how I can properly care for my flowering air plant. Maybe you’re still waiting for your Tillandsia to flower and aren’t sure what you can do to speed up the process. This post is for you in either situation.

Let’s start with some basic information on the flowering cycle of air plants. The bloom, as with any flowering plant, signifies the beginning of the reproductive phase in the life cycle of an air plant. Air plants only bloom once in their lifetime, which may surprise you. Tillandsias produce a variety of flowers depending on the species, with many of them producing stunningly colorful blossoms in a range of hues from delicate pinks to blazing reds, as well as vibrant purples and yellows.

Within the Tillandsia realm, there are many different types of blooms. When some plants, such as the capitata peach, begin to blossom, they turn a delicate pink color and blooms emerge from the middle of the plant. Small buds grow from the heart of the plant in other plants like the aeranthros and stricta. The bud eventually expands and opens to show flowers. Some blooms may survive a few days, while others can last weeks.

Some air plants, such as the caput-medusae and the xerographica, have substantially longer bloom cycles than others. These plants produce huge flower tracts known as inflorescence, which can reach a height of over a foot in certain kinds! The blooms on the tract open out and fall out of the inflorescence over time. A bloom tract on some Tillandsias can last up to a year.

You could see some new growth on the side of your air plant after the bloom cycle is finished. These are tiny air plants, often known as offsets or offshoots “Puppies.” These little babies will grow up and become their own people “the “adult” air plant, and the cycle will start all over again! You can snip off the bloom tract that came out of the plant to boost the next stage of growth after the bloom, which will kick start the pup stage! Depending on the air plant species, the air plant will produce one to three pups after blooming. You can either remove the puppies or let them to form a clump once they reach around 1/3 the size of the mother plant.

Most healthy Tillandsias will blossom at some point, but they will need special care and a lot of light to do so. You can boost flowers and pup production by using a diluted fertilizer like our specially designed Air Plant Food once a month or so to help speed up the blooming process.

So, how should a Tillandsia in bloom be cared for? Keep watering and feeding your plant, first and foremost! When watering blooming air plants, however, you’ll want to avoid getting the flower wet, so instead of dunking or soaking the entire plant, we recommend dunking, misting, or holding only the parts of the air plant that allow you to avoid wetting the bloom beneath softly running water. If the bloom is buried in water for an extended period of time, it may rot or wilt. Because all of the plant’s energy is directed into the bloom and, eventually, the puppies, a blooming plant may require a bit more water than usual. Keep an eye on your plant to ensure that it remains happy and healthy!
